Damian
I met Hayley's eyes, her question hitting me like a punch to the gut. My throat went dry, and for a moment, I couldn't find my voice.
"Damian, did you poison Emily?" she repeated, her voice trembling. I could see the fear and confusion in her eyes, and it tore at my heart.
"No, Hayley," I said, forcing a calm I didn't feel. "I..I would never do something like that." I stepped closer to her, trying to convey sincerity. "I swear to you, I had nothing to do with it."
She scrutinized my face, searching for any sign of deceit. "Then why are you acting so strange?" she demanded, her voice rising. "There's something you're not telling me."
I knew it would be difficult, but I didn't want Hayley to hate me. She knew me better than anyone at the moment, and could easily read through my emotions.
