Chapter 46 - Modern Assault

Akira, while gazing at the camp of the demi-human army, commanded, "Alfred, do it." Alfred began chanting a spell, using mana from Akira to summon a skeleton army. Akira recalled the knowledge of the dark arts he found in the library, appreciating how useful that particular book was. The writer had spent his whole life researching and mastering undead magic, but in the end, the holy knights of the old kingdom decided to end his research and destroy all evidence. A few books like this survived, and now Akira had access to the spells that the mysterious sorcerer had researched. Hundreds of skeletons began to rise from the ground. Akira looked at the undead army gathering behind him and said, "Although these skeletons are weak, it won't matter because they are strong enough for the job I have created them for." The skeletons got in line as if directly connected to Akira's mind. Alfred noted that he was directly controlling them to ensure they didn't make any mistakes.

Akira then started to take out multiple MG-42s from his inventory. "This is a famous and one of the best-performing machine guns of the Second World War," Akira explained. "Although it is not as modern as newer machine guns, it gets the job done and is not that complex to make." He recalled how he had spent days making these 20 guns. AKira also made an enormous amount of bullets of the guns as he knew it would have been very time consuming enchanting every bullet so he instead enchanted the guns powder to have more explosive power and he enchanted the guns to be more resilient than normal guns. Akira ordered the skeletons to form groups of four and distributed the 20 guns among them. He also pulled out plenty of ammo crates and divided them among the groups. Akira instructed Alfred to position the groups so that they circled the entire camp. The skeletons began to take their positions one by one. They placed the guns on the ground and got into firing positions, moving minimally but efficiently under Alfred's control. In each group, one skeleton became the gunner, another the ammo feeder, and the remaining two were reserves to replace the gunner or ammo feeder if needed. Once all the skeleton groups were in position, Akira teleported Gammagob and Deltagob to his location. The teleportation momentarily shocked Deltagob, but Gammagob was unfazed. They saw Akira before them and bowed.

Akira then faced the camp and formed an invisible shield around himself, the ogres, and the wyvern. He ordered Alfred to fire until no one survived. All at once, the skeletons reloaded the guns, making a cranking sound. The noise coming from all around the camp confused the enemies as it was a totally new sound for them. As they tried to look into the forest, every skeleton started firing at everything. The whole forest lit up with muzzle flashes, creating total mayhem. All the beast people and dragonfolk struggled to understand what was happening. The constant noise of gunfire and the sight of comrades falling left even the greatest warriors in disarray and confusion. One by one, everyone became lifeless. Akira, safe behind the shield, focused on gathering and consuming the souls of the dead. Stray bullets hit the shield but did not penetrate it. The camps fell, and trees were cut down by the bullets and a totally new grin on Akira's face. Initially, there were sounds of demi-humans suffering, cries for help, and screams, but soon only the sound of guns firing remained. Some souls escaped Akira's grasp, but he knew the army was big. There was no doubt that he would get enough souls and then after a while he had successfully collected a thousand souls. Akira could evolve into a higher state now but he decided to delay it because he needed to be at a safe location to start the evolution process and knowing Alfred, it would never initiate the process until Akira was at a safe location.

As the camp was near Akira's town, everyone in the town heard the constant loud bangs. Jarvis and Alphagob rushed to the edge of the town and saw the flashes. Alphagob decided to investigate. Detecting stray bullets coming their way, Alphagob used his giant sword as a shield, protecting Jarvis. The sound of bullets hitting the sword made a "tinnn" sound and created sparks. Jarvis bent down and picked up a bullet, it reminded him of the time Master Akira used a strange artifact on the wall. Investigating the impact on the wall the next day, he found a similar object. Jarvis concluded that this was Akira's doing. He explained his thoughts to Alphagob, adding that if Master Akira wanted them at that location, he would have just teleported them there. Since they weren't being teleported, it meant Master Akira wanted them to stay. Alphagob thought for a moment and agreed, then they both took cover but remained ready to jump into action.

After firing for a while, the barrels of the guns became red hot, so Alfred made the skeletons stop to prevent further damage. Complete silence followed. Not even the sound of wild animals remained. Akira deactivated his shield and walked towards the ruined camps of the Duatt army with Deltagob and Gammagob behind him. Emerging from the bushes, Akira saw corpses scattered around, some missing limbs, others missing entire upper or lower halves. He spotted a few beast people taking their last breaths, and Gammagob swiftly ended their misery. In the middle of the camp, Akira noticed a globe-shaped shield. Approaching it, he found the leader, his healer, and another warrior had survived the attack by forming a shield around themselves. The healer, a female fox person, deactivated the cracked shield, almost out of mana. The leader, a harpy, and his guard, a minotaur, helped the healer up. They saw the horror around them and the sight of their fallen comrades enraged them. They all glared at Akira with fierce anger. Knowing that he was the person responsible for this disaster.
