Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: Remnant of the Past

The first thing that Natalie got to see in the morning was sunlight filtering through the curtains. Several memories of the previous evening conflicted feelings within her as she over and over again tried to sort things out. She had met Scott, felt his regret, felt David. Each time she talked to him she felt more confused than the time before. Later that day, Natalie dressed herself in modest but tasteful clothing after taking a rather long, warm shower. She wanted to clear her ideas, and so she thought of visiting her most preferred coffee shop, which is a small and comfortable shop situated in a less crowded area of the town. The café was always her safe haven, her place where she could clear her mind and get away from all the cruelties of her life. She sat quietly in her chair, drinking coffee and staring out the window; her mind began reminiscing. Her forced marriage to Scott was to merge two powerful families—an event that was business-like and contracted with marriage vows. But the initial beginning of a mere more or less emotionless pact slowly turned into reality. This was when Scott tried to reveal his true colors to her while pretending to be a billionaire. Her shared laughter, evening stays, and the intimate touches were enough to make her realize that he loved her. But this tale destroyed everything good there was. Consequently, Scott and Isabel together were sore that they never quite scabbed over.

Thinking of this even now brought a rigorous pain in her chest. She sat up in bed suddenly when her phone on the bedside table beeped. This was a message from David; it is a short text. "Hi Natalie, let's have lunch today." "It must be today. I want to really sit down and catch up." In this case, David has been very important in her life, being a companion and a reliable pillar all through. "Of course, David." I sighed with relief when he responded, "Let's meet at the usual place at noon." When with David, everything was clearer and manageable. Natalie arrived at the rather small bistro that she and David visited during lunchtime, whenever Natalie rehearsed with Scott. The once familiar warmth and complacency of the surroundings surrounded her, as did the smell of freshly baked bread. David was also seated by the table beside the window waiting for her arrival; the moment she came, he greeted her with a wide smile on his face. "Natalie.  " I nodded; he got up from the table and pulled my chair back for me. "It is great to be introduced to you."" "You too, David." She answered, and she followed his lead to sit down. "This is good of you to offer this to me. "I require this." They started ordering some foods and drinks and started talking nonsensically; these matters ranged from aspects of childhood to aspects of the present. Since David can be easily managed and is actually concerned with her health status, she felt relieved. "I have heard that Scott's company invested in some new project." He nearly recited the question, but it seemed that he was quite curious. "What do you do, for instance, working on a set, to deal with the fact that you have to come back to that world again? In her turn, Natalie blew air out through her lips. "It was complicated." "Meting Scott again and facing all these memories was harder than I thought," he repeated. This, David said, and he crossed over to the table and took her hand. "Honestly, I am not sure how tough it might be. Just to let you know whatever you need, I am here for you." His touch relieved her spirit, though, at the same time making Natalie go through another stage of confusion. Nevertheless, for all her words and her gratitude for his company, she had been in love with Scott and had not gotten over him. But before she could say anything, her meal was served, and the chances to get more information escaped her. Hence, after lunch, Natalie resolved to visit her parent's house, which was a one-regal estate. Once it was the symbol of their splendid wealth, but for Natalie it was the house. Staring at her huge corridors, she recalled a number of memories of her childhood. Her parents planned her marriage with Scott in the best interest of both families, with no wrong intentions all in all. Natalie, honey! She heard her mother calling for her from downstairs, and the sound traveled from the hallway up to the second flight of stairs. He was not ready for me: "I didn't know that you would come today." "Hi mom," Natalie disrupted the silence, forcing herself to smile. "Natalie only wished to look at this place and get some fresh air for herself." Per her reaction, her mother relaxed and looked concerned at her. "I guess it will be difficult to get used to the fact that we will be able to meet Scott again." Natalie replied with half the truth: "I'm taking care of it." Out of embarrassment, she did not wish to contact her mother while in confusion. They stayed in the living room and sipped tea while engaging in conversations. Still a socialite, her mother made sure that she had updated her on her family's news and gossip. She was right below the chitchat; Natalie could see that her mother was worried. "Natalie, I know that you have gone through a lot." For a few minutes, her mother did not utter a word, but when she finally spoke, her voice was soft. "But remember. You have every right to be happy. So go ahead and listen to your heart, whoever he is, Scott included. " The words of her mother echoed in Natalie's head as she walked out of her house. Follow your heart. It appeared easy enough, but it appeared to be complex.

One evening Natalie's was surprised by a rather unexpected company. Three days later, she was alone cooking a meal for herself when she heard a knock on the door of the apartment. She opened it and saw Scott standing awkwardly on the doorway, looking almost helpless. "Scott," he said in a serious voice. "Can I come in?" She, however, looked at him and then moved aside to create space for him to get in. He glanced at her warm and comfortable flat and realized that they used to live in a mansion. Being deprived of adequate authorized preliminary permission from the authority, he said clumsily, "I'm sorry for coming unannounced. He was seated and turned towards her, and as slowly as possible, he attempted to begin a conversation. "However, after gala, I began to think a lot: I have something to tell you, something that you need to listen to, something that needs to be said. Natalie leaned on the kitchen counter and put her arms akimbo. "Go on. This scenery made Scott, who had nothing to do, think for a while before taking a deep breath. "Isabel, I know I have hurt you deeply, and I regret it every day. She was a mistake, and I will always regret it. But now she's gone. His words stayed in the air, and the impact of his statement slowed down. As Natalie experienced the cocktail of feelings—relief, anger, and sorrow. "If only I could change the past, but this is the present, and I want to fix everything." Scott followed it. "I do not say sorry to begin with. "I would like to show you that yes, I have understood my mistake, and I am really sorry for it." Natalie looked into his eyes, which she expected to say something in a more truthful way similar to how he used to be." Scott, it is not that straightforward. You betrayed my trust. The process of rebuilding trust takes time.". "I understand." He said softly "But I am willing to wait." "I will do my best to restore the shattered trust." And there were no words, which could be as perfect as his last one—'I'm not leaving, I'm just going'—as he left, but these words remained in Natalie's soul. Natalie knew it would not be easy today; a part of her wanted to see the man again. The next day was the fateful night for Natalie, as she lay awake staring at the ceiling. Along with affectionate David's shoulder, there was a rather vague Scott's apology, which gave her different emotions throughout the day. She had a choice of two lovers who were giving her things, as each of them had her heart broken into pieces. David was the reflection of her constancy and simplicity of love, and so it did not take a lot of persuasion before she was hooked. However, Scott was her past, present, and maybe the future as well. Their love was deep, passionate, and genuine, and yet it was a love that was abruptly ended after having tasted the pain of betrayal. Natalie even started dozing, knowing that there is still a long way to go before she can reach where she wanted to. It is a tale of trials as you gain her trust, fix the fractured relationship, and learn that she has only one heart she has to listen to. But she did not find it suitable to confront this situation any further, even though she understood it as a developing issue. At the same time, she will be doing this every day, walking around the remnant of the past and the creations of a mind that is actively building the future. Besides, she listened to heartbeats, expecting them to lead her to the place she wanted to be, a place called happiness.
