Chapter 10: The mafia game 2
"The game of the year is....the Mafia game". The voice receeded, leaving anticipation and anxiety in the hearts of the students. However, in the next moment, gasps erupted.
"Mafia?", one of the students shouted. A fatty named Carl
"What kind of game is that?", another one added.
"Crestwood would never stop amazing me".
Ava looked at Kyle who was seated beside her. They had a general class so he stayed back as he wasn't having any other lectures.
"What do you think best?", Ava asked with a certain smile on her face.
"Sounds interesting to me".
"Yeah can't wait for Sunday to arrive".
Kaitlyn saw them from where she sat and came to sit beside Ava. Kyle rolled his eyes the moment she arrived.
"Hey Ava"
"What's up Kaitie?"
"Nothing. Just heard about the game".
"Yeah. It's gonna be fun. Know anything about the game?"
"I think I have a clue of what will happen ", she said. Her voice wasn't so loud but Ava was there to amplify it for her.
"You have a clue?"
Everyone turned in their direction, and began gathering around.
Kaitlyn looked at Ava who smiled at her with a nod.
Kaitlyn began telling them about the game.
"It's a game that involves some categories of people. Mafias, doctors, citizens and police", she paused to look at them. Everyone was looking at her. For the first time in her life, everyone was looking at her. She wouldn't accredit it to Ava but to the game. She didn't know about the game but had just looked it up some minutes ago. She didn't expect that it would come out handy. Kyle was the only one who wasn't looking at her. However, she continued.
"So, the game is against the mafias. For the whole of that period of time, we are to nominate whoever we think is a Mafia. The person with the highest vote, whether a Mafia or not, dies".
"Why? We can point out the mafia easily right?", someone asked.
"No. We have to keep our identities a secret, even from those closest to us", she said this especially for Ava to hear.
"The game is creepy. I'll have to fall sick on that day", Daisy said causing a peal of laughter to erupt.
"It's actually a fun game" Kaitlyn said again, catching their attention. She wanted all eyes on her.
"Fine then, let's wait for Sunday".
Soon, the crowd dispersed and everyone was talking about the game. Kaitlyn looked at Ava who was smiling at her.
"You could make a lot of friends Katie. You don't have to be inside your shell always".
"You can't force her out", that was Kyle talking.
"It's all thanks to you queen ".
"That's not a problem. On this note, let's have lunch together?"
Kaitlyn looked at Kyle. "It's fine. I'm the one paying", Ava said trying to salvage the situation.
Ava dragged her away, leaving a fuming Kyle behind.
The week was soon done and Sunday soon arrived. Ava packed in a few items as she wasn't one to pack a lot. That Sunday evening, Kyle arrived at her place with his car to help her pack and also to pick her up.
Mrs Bateman was the happiest to see him. One would think that she was his bestie instead of Ava. She wound up a fast meal while Kyle was in Ava's room.
"You never pack a lot" he said folding in one of her trousers into the bag.
"I know right? It's a hassle".
He chuckled as he zipped up the bag. She was already dressed in her usual baggy outfit, which she liked the most. It was very comfortable and free. Easy peesy.
The school was already filled with students, though some were still on their way. Kyle went to the boys room while Ava went to the ladies room.
Soon, everyone had already unpacked and were seated at the auditorium, waiting for instructions.
"Good evening, students of Crestwood College. Now it's time to talk about the Mafia game", came the monotonous male voice. It explained all the rules to them.
"Now, everyone, it's time to find your identity".
A chiming sound was heard from each of their phones. Everyone checked the notification and it was their identity that was sent to them.
"What's yours?", Ava asked
"Citizen", Kyle replied
"Me too".
They both chuckled. Kaitlyn hated the fact that they were always together. Whatever it was, she didn't want to believe that they were just besties. Kyle wouldn't have any feelings for Ava but the latter would. She didn't know what would happen if Kyle knew of his bestie's feelings but she would have to find out. She had seen the way Ava looks at him. Though it was always a fleeting moment, she was still able to capture it. That day on the rooftop, she had seen Ava looking at a bracelet on her wrist her face solemn. She needed to find out as soon as possible.
That night, the game commenced. That same monotonous voice gave them cue to start voting people. Due to their large number, three people with the highest vote would face death.
People began voting. It was quite fun as the identities were a secret. The voice came again.
"Three people with the highest vote has been chosen. They're Diana Jones, Henry Kim and Carl Martins"
Gasps filled the air.
" Henry and Carl are citizens. Diana is a Mafia '
"Jeez! That's unfair", one of them said.
Three people wearing weird looking costumes came out and took the three people who were called. Laughter filled the whole place as they were taken away.
"Everyone, night has come", the voice said and students dropped to the floor playfully. They closed their eyes as if asleep. After an hour, a set of people woke up. They were the mafias.
