Chereads / Apocalypse: The Last Light / Chapter 6 - Growing Up

Chapter 6 - Growing Up

A suspended transport vehicle passed by the road in front of the Raven Manor and then stopped at a farm not far from the place.

On a big tree on the side of the road, a small, but swift figure shuttled quickly among the branches, and then leaped off the last branch. A five to six year-old boy landed on the ground and quickly ran towards the entrance of the Raven Manor, while shouting. "Uncle Bob, Sister Angel, the empty farm opposite has a new neighbor!"

As little Linley shouted, a thirteen-year-old girl walked out of the house, dressed like a young lady. "Don't run, walk slowly!" Seeing her brother rushing toward her, Angel quickly opened her arms and hugged Linley, and then used the scarf on her body to wipe the sweat on the little guy's head, "Relax, little guy. I'm here now. Come on, let's go home. I'll make a cake, then we go and say hello to the new neighbors together."

After that, she pulled Linley and walked towards the house.

As soon as the entered the house, Bob came over and said, "Miss, young master, I have just contacted the local magistrate here. Our new neighbors are Captain Russell Kate and his family. Captain Russell just retired due to injury not long ago, and then bought the empty farm next to us."

"Thank you Uncle Bob. I will go to the kitchen to bake a cake first. Then I will take my brother to visit Captain Kate's family later. Now please help me clean up Linley. He is too dirty to go to the neighbor's house like this. We don't want to be put in cages as guests, do we?" Angel smiled as she handed her brother's hand to Bob and walked towards the kitchen.

Almost an hour later, a newly dressed Linley and her sister arrived in front of Captain Kate's house. Angel was carrying a small basket with a cake she had made by herself.

Russell Kate was once a captain of the Empire's Golden Lion Army. He was injured in a battle with the barbarian people on the border, and one of his legs remained on the desert planet forever. So, he had to retire. After retiring, Russell was introduced to this farm on Planet Mureta 3. Today, after two months of interstellar navigation, their family finally arrived at their new home. They had just finished cleaning their new home when the doorbell rang.

Russell opened the door and saw a young girl, and her little brother standing in front of the door. The little girl gave people a sense of sunshine, tranquility and comfort. She was looking at him with a smile on her face. The little boy next to her was wearing this little dress and a bow tie. Maybe the bow tie was too tight, because the little guy pulled the buttons of the bow tie with his hands from time to time.

When Russell opened the door, the little boy looked up at him. His blue eyes made Russell feel like he was looking at the sea. What a pair of children with extraordinary temperament. Although they were still young, Russell could see in them a temperament that only existed in nobles. But did their parents send them over?

"Hello, who are you?" Russell asked the little girl.

"Hello, Mr. Kate, my name is Angel, and this is Linley. We are neighbors who live in the Raven Manor opposite your house. My brother saw your transport truck, so I made a cake for your family." Angel replied politely.

"Oh! Welcome! You two come in and have your seats." Russell let the two little guys into the house, and followed them in. "Sweetheart, we have some guests, please bring Bowie with you."

Following Russell's loud voice, a woman came out of the back room with a child. Seeing the Angel siblings, the woman quickly wiped her hands on her scarf twice, and then approached them in the living room.

"This is my wife Elena, and this is my son, Bowie." Russell followed behind them, introducing the woman and child as he walked.

"Hello, Mrs. Kate, my name is Angel, and this is my brother Linley." Angel introduced herself and her brother to Elena politely. Little Linley also politely bowed to the lady in front of him as a gentleman.

"Hello, you are so polite. You even brought a gift." Mrs. Kate pulled a chair next to Angel, and then took the basket she brought.

"I made this myself. It's not a precious gift. I guess you must have been busy sorting the place out when you just moved here, and no time to make food, so I made a cake for you." Angel replied.

Elena took out a few basins from the kitchen, and Angel also helped share the cake.

Everyone sat around and chatted about home life while eating cake. After a while, they became familiar with each other. The Kate family got to know about the demise of the Raven couple and offered their condolences.

"Well, this cake is so delicious! Miss Angel, your baking is really good!" Mrs. Kate praised while eating.

"Haha, if you like them, then I will make more for you in the future."

"Okay! You and your brother are welcome to come and play often in our house. When the time comes, please bring your Uncle Bob with you," Russell said.

"Okay. Mr. Kate." Angel replied.

Linley was not paying attention to the conversation between his sister and the new neighbor at this time. He was looking at the little boy sitting next to the hostess. Bowie looked a little shy, and always hid behind his mother.

"Sister, can I play with Bowie?" Linley suddenly asked his sister.

"Of course! Bowie, take Linley to visit your little cottage and let him see the interstellar travel photos you took." Before Angel could answer, Russell had already sent out the invitation.

Seeing that her sister nodded to him, Sylven immediately stood up, walked to Bowie, and stretched out his hand, "Hi! My name is Sylven, can you take me to visit your home?"

"Okay... ...Okay." Bowie stood up and shook Linley's hand, then led him to his room.

Looking at the many photos taken by Bowie, Linley said with some envy: "You have been to so many places!"

"Yes...yes, I...my father used to...go to different planets for garrison duty, and our family also...went along with him." Bowie answered.

"Oh! You are so lucky. I have lived here since I was a child."

"But you're still a child."

"Well... I guess."

"So you've never seen other places."

"No, and have never been to the space either. I heard that I was born in the space though, but I was too young at that time and had no feeling. And... my parents were also there. They died the day I was born." Linley became depressed as he spoke.

"How...how did your parents die?"

"I heard that I met space pirates on the day I was born. They were killed by the pirates." Linley suddenly clenched his fists. "When I grow up, I will also join the army. I must destroy those pirates and avenge my parents!" "

Bowie looked directly at Sylven. He suddenly stretched out his hand to hold Linley's fist, and then said in a serious tone. "I...I will also...fight pirates with you in the future! For...for your... Mom and Dad, I'll help you take revenge!"

"A promise?"

"Yea, a promise."

"Let's stop talking about these sad topics. Continue telling me the story of each of your photo." Linley suddenly started laughing again, and the serious expression he had briefly before seemed to have never appeared. However, while Bowie was lowering his head to operate the photo browser, Linley quietly turned his head and wiped away a teardrop from the corner of his eye.

For two hours that afternoon, Linley and Bowie kept looking at photos and telling stories. The continuous bursts of laughter, coming from the room, could be heard from time to time.

By the time Angel called his to get ready for home, the two little boys of the same age had become true friends.
