Chapter 3 - Stasis

Chirp. Chirp. The cries of hunger can be heard from a nest alerting the mother of new hatchlings.

Newly planted roses sprout from the ground.

A young deer frolics through the forest.

A young boy cries as he is embraced by his mother for the first time.

Life.

"Mom, why is Grandpa sleeping in the box?" Gavin asks his mother while slouching back in his chair. Evelyn with tears in her eyes looks down at her beloved child and contemplates whether or not to lie to spare his innocence. "Its more comfortable for his back." She says softly trying to hold back the deep emotion in her voice as she stares into her child's eyes trying to focus on his smile rather than the pain echoing from the coffin in front of her.

Death.

"Till death do us part." Dylan proclaims as he kisses his beloved and the crowd cheers.

Love.

Gregory stares into the eyes of a man in handcuffs. "I didn't kill anyone." The man mutters and Gregory's eyes narrow.

Hate.

Annah cries into her pillow as she stares at old messages, records of how happy she was.

Pain.

Butterflies fly through fields of flowers as the wind gently blows through the valley.

Peace.

A man cleaves the head off another as distant screams are heard throughout the village. Wood burns as men fight another in the name of there people while the enemy does the same. One declares itself victorious. The cycle repeats.

War.

A woman cries as her once strong husband lays weak in front of her on a hospital bed.

Pain.

A bear falls into the grass as it looks to its hunter. It can remember its cubs cries as the world goes black. "Filthy Beast."

Pain.

A man wanted to see the mountains but couldn't as his eyes grew dark.

Pain.

Losing a loved one.

Pain.

A boy being Born. A man dying years later. A woman cries.

Pain.

A woman dies. A boy cries.

Pain.

Being born. Dying years later.

Pain.

Being Born.

Pain.

Living.

Pain.

Mortality.

Pain.

Kevin observed worlds as time progressed. Lives withered but he did not. People felt pain but he did not. Beings experienced mortality but he did not. Mortality was pain.

Why was he spared it?

Kevin disappeared into the canopy of a world. Its name was unimportant as the those of the lives who existed on it. As they all would wither and be forgotten the same but he wouldn't be. He stared up at the stars that would wither away but he wouldn't.

Why was everything going to meet its end but him?

Why was everyone else so finite while he danced in the power of infinity?

Why was he given this gift?

Kevin sunk in into the soil of a dying planet. Eons passed but he remained unchanged.

Its unfair.
