I sat at my desk, lost in thought, when I sensed a presence behind me. I knew it was Alex, my beta, without even looking up. He had a way of carrying himself that commanded attention.
"Alex," I said, my voice low and even.
He didn't respond, but I could sense his eyes on me, awaiting an explanation. I sighed, knowing I couldn't avoid this conversation forever.
"You're not going to let this go, are you?" I asked, my eyes still fixed on the papers in front of me.
Alex nodded, his expression unreadable. But I knew him well enough to sense the surprise and curiosity behind his eyes.
"I'm the father of her children," I said, my voice barely above a whisper.
Alex's eyes widened, but he didn't pry. He simply nodded, his expression still surprised, but trying to cover it up.
"Does she know?" he asked, his voice low and even.
I knew he was talking about Diana, my mate. I shook my head. "No, and she must never know."
