Kylie stood alone, her mind racing with questions. What had Karl discovered? What secrets was he hiding? And where was Gravill? She shook her head, trying to clear the cobwebs, but her thoughts only seemed to tangle further. With a determined sigh, she turned and headed to her room, exhaustion etched on her face.
Meanwhile, Karl vanished into the night like a ghost, leaving behind only the faintest whisper of his presence. His footsteps echoed through the darkness, growing fainter with each passing moment, until they were swallowed by the silence.
Far away, Gravill, Elsa, Nicholas, and the enigmatic old woman, Rosa, fled through the forest, pursued by a pack of spirit wolves. Their breathless gasps and pounding footsteps punctuated the night air as they desperately sought escape. Rosa's hands danced through intricate patterns, conjuring spells to mask their trail and confound their pursuers.
"What's the point of that?" Gravill asked, his voice barely audible over the pounding of his heart.
Rosa remained silent, her eyes fixed on some unseen point ahead.
"I think she's trying to hide our tracks from the pack," Nicholas whispered to Gravill, his eyes darting nervously towards the darkness.
Gravill's eyes widened in surprise. "How did you know?"
But before Nicholas could respond, disaster struck. As Gravill leapt over a tree branch, something fell from above, ensnaring him and Nicholas in a tangled web of vines and branches. The unexpected trap had been triggered, and they were now helpless, suspended in mid-air.
Elsa and Rosa skidded to a halt, their faces etched with concern. "How do we get them out? There's no time!" Elsa exclaimed, her voice laced with panic.
Rosa's eyes scanned the surrounding trees, her expression grim. "There's no need. We're surrounded."
Before Elsa could respond, a maniacal laughter echoed through the forest, sending shivers down their spines. A dark gray wolf with glowing red eyes emerged from the shadows, its form shifting and contorting until it stood on two legs, transformed into a towering figure with piercing eyes.
"Well, well, well. Great job you've done, Rosa," the stranger said, his voice dripping with malice.
Nicholas and Gravill exchanged bewildered glances. Who was this stranger? And who was Rosa, really?
Elsa's thoughts raced ahead. This was no ordinary spirit wolf. There was something unnatural about this creature, something that defied explanation.
Gravill, meanwhile, was struck dumb, his eyes fixed on the stranger in horror. He had never seen anything like this in his seventeen years of life.
Rosa, however, seemed to know exactly what was happening. She knelt before the stranger, her head bowed in submission. "Greetings, Alpha," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.
The stranger's laughter grew louder, more menacing. "Haha, great job you've done, and you will be rewarded handsomely for this."
Rosa's face lit up with a macabre smile. Gravill's eyes widened in shock as the stranger continued, "Bring them to the pack house and throw them in the dungeon. They will pay for killing my son."
The forest seemed to grow darker, the shadows deepening into abysses as the stranger's words hung in the air. Gravill's gaze darted around, and he saw eyes watching them from the trees, a sea of unblinking gazes that seemed to bore into their very souls.
