The sound of the chirping birds echoed through the room as an alarm clock for Kaito. He groaned as he rolled in his bed, not wanting to be awaken by his servants for school. The only difference was that now he wasn't at home anymore. Opening his eyes, he glanced over at the already awake Yukie who was drinking coffee at the desk. She was still wearing the same kimono she wore the other day, and she looked happier today than yesterday.
Groaning, Kaito rubbed the sleep out of his eyes before looking over at Yukie. "Good morning."
Jumping in her seat, Yukie turned around, smiling at Kaito. "Good morning! Did you have a good sleep?"
Nodding his head, Kaito got out of bed before looking over at the microwave clock. It read 7:00 am.
"Oh. What time does my class normally start?" Kaito took out the cord from his phone and checked his classes. They were different from the classes he had back in Tokyo High. Those classes contained math, history, English, Japanese, etc. But in this school, the classes were more geared toward powers and combat. "It starts at 8:00 am. But I seem to have different classes than back in my old school. History of the Chosen Ones. Face to face combat training. Power control. These all sound different."
"They do, but they sound interesting." Yukie peeked over Kaito's shoulder to check out his classes for the day. "If only I could be seen by others, then I would 100% do those classes." Yukie sighed.
"Oh, yeah. Ever since I met you, I wanted to ask you, why can't people see you?" Kaito decided to ask.
"That is a good question." Yukie looked up at the ceiling as if she, herself, were looking for an answer to that question. "I'm actually cursed."
"Cursed?"
"Yes." She nodded her head intensely. "You see. I took something I wasn't supposed to. That's why I'm the way I am now. No one can see me. I can't even use my own powers without your help." Yukie looked down at her hands.
"You have powers too, Yukie?" Kaito was shocked. He didn't expect her to have powers like him.
"In a way, I do, but it seems like you need me and I need you, Kaito. Without each other, we can't save our world." Yukie explained. "You could say that you're the body and I'm the mind. Without the body, the mind can't reach its full potential, and vice versa.
Kaito narrowed his eyes, trying to understand what she was trying to say. From his understanding, she used to be human until a curse, and without him, she couldn't use her powers. But if she were the "figure," then why did she tell him that she would train him rather than just using his body for herself? Some of the things were a bit unclear, but he decided not to ask until the time was right.
"I see." He lowered his head before looking back up at her. "So how are you going to 'train me,' anyway?"
Yukie then placed her thumb and index finger on her chin and started stroking it as she thought about his question. "You know? I have no clue. You can't use the power at all?"
"I have never tried." Kaito looked down at his hands.
"Here, then follow me." Yukie guided Kaito to the front of the school gate. She looked left and right, hoping to find some kind of monster or something. "Ah! There! Try on that dog over there!"
Kaito looked at the dog who looked innocent. His heart couldn't bear making that dog turn into dust if his powers did work. "No, Yukie. I can't do that." He frowned.
"But that dog's a monster." Yukie explained.
"Just because he looked at you funny doesn't mean he's evil." Kaito rolled his eyes.
"No. Look." Yukie turned Kaito's focus to the dog using her hands to move his head for him. "If you actually look close enough, you'll notice his butt has a red butthole."
"What does a does the color of a butthole have anything to do with him being a monster or not?"
"Fine, if you don't believe me, then I'll just have to show you." Yukie picked up a pebble from the ground and then threw it at the dog. Before Kaito could tell her to stop, the dog suddenly transformed into a large beast, growling at both Kaito and Yukie.
"Oh my God!" Kaito flinched.
"See! I told you!"
"Run!" Kaito grabbed Yukie's hand and pulled her away from the gate that was soon crashed down by the beast.
"Oh, wow." Yukie was shocked but then looked at Kaito with a grin. "Okay! You can do this, Kaito. I believe in you!"
"What on earth?! What kind of training is this?" Kaito started running away with Yukie.
"Chosen Ones don't run away from a fight, Kaito! You coward!" Yukie started screaming at him.
Some of the other Chosen Ones ran out of the classrooms and dorm rooms once seeing the monster, trying their best to stop the monster in its tracks.
"You are insane, Yukie." Kaito stood his ground. He held up his hand before looking over at her. "What am I supposed to do now?"
"Be one with the gift!" Yukie grinned.
Closing his eyes, Kaito tried being one with the gift without even knowing what that meant. But before he knew it, the world around him stopped. The monster stopped and so did the Chosen Ones. "What the—?!"
"You're doing so far so good, Kaito." Yukie was the only thing that didn't stop. Kaito came to the conclusion that it could have been because she was still in his head. "Now keep focusing."
Closing his eyes once more, Kaito felt the gift encapturing him, filling his body with a firey spirit. Once opening his eyes, he felt the words echo out of his mouth, "Forward!"
Time then played, but the time around the monster was moving quickly. The monster's skin started melting as its life was flashing before everyone's eyes. The skin that became like hot soup dripped off of the skeletal body, leaving only bones and the roting flesh to disintegrate into dust.
Everyone around Kaito stared at him with a shocked expression. They have never seen a gift like that before. Someone who can control someone's time and life like that was considered fearful.
As Kaito stood there, he heard one last airy, disturbing breath say, "So, you have chosen..."
With that, the voice vanished and Kaito returned to his normal self, falling to his knees. "What was that...?"
"Kai—"
"Kaito!" Yijun and Ryan ran up to Kaito, interrupting Yukie.
"What was that?! That was different from what you did the other day in class." Yijun grinned, excited by what just happened.
"Yeah, that was seriously really awesome." Ryan added. "We didn't know you were that strong!"
"I didn't either." Kaito sighed, feeling the energy he once had leave his body. He couldn't help but wonder what on earth that voice was. Did Yukie hear it too? He wondered.
"What is going on out here?" John Robinson ran up to the group of students waiting around. He looked at the area where the monster once was, and found a pile of dust. "What is this? Who did this?"
All the Chosen Ones then pointed toward Kaito, who was still on the floor.
"Kaito?" John took off his sunglasses, glaring at him. "Meet me in my office later."
The rest of the Chosen Ones then stared at Kaito, waiting for him to do something, but all this chaos caused him to faint.
"Kaito!"
