Chapter 20 - A ride home

December 8, 2021

Words: Automatic

A husband, tired from work, went inside the comfort of his vehicle. The vehicle was expensive. It was a Tesla Model X. He took a deep breath and exhaled his mental exhaustion away. Fiddling the control panel, he made his way to the music selection screen, selecting his favorite music; jazz.

The orchestra of trumpet resounded the vehicle. As he started the engine with a press of a button, a solo of the piano started. As he backed up the car, the complicated melody soothes the man's soul. Successfully making an escape from the double parking, the husband started his journey home.

In the dead of night, the roads are usually empty. The husband shifted his gear to four, slightly accelerating through the highway.

What a wonderful tune the trumpet was playing. The notes felt like a melody fluttering in the air, until it shifted in octave to deliver a menacing tone. It was a complicated melody, yet the husband loved it.

The husband was cutting air. The vehicle was going at unimaginable speeds. He glanced at the speedometer only to see it broken, displaying ascending and descending numbers. The orchestra played an ominous melody. It was a slow deep tone that sent a chill down the husband's spine.

He tried to use the break. No response. He tried to use autopilot. No response. He tried to shift the gears. No response. He cannot stop the car from accelerating.

He was soaked in sweat. He does not know how to stop the vehicle let alone control it. He was not stepping on the peddle and yet it kept getting faster. His heart pounded as if it wanted to escape his chest.

The music played an eerie melody as it randomly went back and forth. He watched the hazy view of the outside as he darted through the highway. The labyrinth of lights made a trail as they went by, as if he was going through a tunnel of colorful lights. The feeling was bittersweet. He felt his inevitable doom while he was intrigued by the beauty of the lights.

Ahead of him was pitch black. The lights disappeared. The husband felt the dread as they gradually approached death. Then, he went into the darkness.

The husband screamed for his life. However, a familiar voice called out to him. It was his wife knocking on the window of the driver's seat. He was dumbfounded. When he lowered the window, the wife quickly noticed his disgraceful appearance.

Clothes soaked in his sweat, messy hair, and a terrified expression. The wife signed as he helped him off the vehicle. The husband cursed the vehicle and swore to never ride it again. As the wife listened to his banter, she comforted him with a few strokes on his back.
