"Here we are," their father said when his chauffer stopped the car in from of the school gate.
Their black car parked in front of the school gate, paired with others cars dropping off students for school and droving off, leaving space for the next car to come. The school gate was crowded by kids all dressed in blue and white getting in the school compound while talking vividly among themselves. A little smile made its way on to Eva face as she watched them. School has finally started much to her relief. Staying home all day was not for her. She would get to see her friends again.
The S school was one of the most prestigious school in the whole country. Having your child graduate from there was already a secure future for them, which makes it the dream school for every parents and students but it wasn't the only reason. It was also a symbol of wealth to have your child school there. The fees was not to be taken for granted which made so that only the children from wealthy family could be able to afford it. It didn't stop people from the lower class to hope to have their children enroll. The school grant scholarship every year, giving a unique opportunity for those who wasn't among the elites.
"Take care of your sister," he said to Eva, patting Elsa head who was sitting beside him, on the back seat. Eva was on the front side.
"I will," Eva answered. He didn't have to ask, she takes it as her role as the elder to take care of her little sister.
He nodded, pleased by her a answered. He place a soft kiss on Elsa forehead.
"Have a good day princess," he said, smiling fondly at her.
The driver open the back door after having Eva stepped out of the car. Once Elsa joined Eva on the ground, they both wave to their father and wait for the car to speed off before they turned to the school, joining the others heading for the first day of the school year.
Holding Elsa hand the whole time, Eva guide them in the school. The S school had both the nursery, primary and secondary levels all at the same location but there were two separate gates for the nursery and primary level from those of the secondary level.
Once the crossed the gate, they were greeted by a breath taking view of the garden and the fountain giving way to the entrance of the primary school big door. The nursey school was more at the corner, far from the view from the gate.
Every now and then, the other students getting in stopped to greet Eva and have a small talk with her. She was very popular in the school and not only among her age mate. She knows even those who was way older than her. Elsa watch in wonder at all the people who seem to know her sister.
Eva spotted some of her friends, with whom she was with last year talking at the entrance of their door, down the stair but decided it was better to have Elsa off first. So it's what she did, she accompany her to her class and only left once Elsa had settle down. On her way back, she saw her friend at the same position but they were no more talking among themselves but was instead surrounding something. As she walked closer to them, she spotted her best friend, Zachariah. She was going to called for him when she notice the little girl hiding behind her best friend back.
She froze for a moment. Here she thought Elsa was the most beautiful girl but the one hiding behind her friend was even more.
"She look like Elsa," she murmured as she took closer steps towards them.
The little girl didn't resembles Elsa at all if not for her blonde hair and her pale skin.
"I am a boy!" she heard the little girl shout when she was close enough to hear what was been say.
She tilted her head at the sudden exclamation of the person hiding behind her friend and from the look of it, she couldn't find a way where he was a boy. The person was like a princess with her long blond hair tight in a ponytail and had few strand fall over her face. Her face was petit and harbour the same feature like Elsa; big eyes but hers was green, pink lips and a chubby face. Eva was falling for her cuteness.
If she was a little more concentrate on the person she claim was a girl overall view, she would have notice the person was wearing pants.
"You are lying of course you are a girl," One of her friend argued.
She nodded in agreement. The person was definitely a girl, she wonder while she was claiming otherwise.
"He is not," Zachariah scolded back, taking a few step back to put on some distance between them. They were way too close and was making the little boy behind him reckless. He was getting frustrated by the situation. Why don't they just accept what they were been told!?
"You are also lying Zachariah. She has long hairs, how could she be a boy?" they gave him a look. For them it was obvious he was lying even though they don't get the reason why.
Zach look restless, having no idea how to help his friend and convince them that the person hiding behind him was indeed a boy.
"I'm not lying!" he insisted.
"Yes, you are!" the rest said at the same time.
Eva frowned, not liking how they were pressuring Zach, "if he say his is a boy, then he is a boy!" Eva scolded them, hands resting on her hip with a big frown on her face.
Earlier she totally agreed with them but not anymore. Even if he was indeed lying, they were no need to push it onto them like they were doing. She didn't like it at all.
They all turned their attention at the source of the voice.
"Eva…"
Their face light up in content but remain silence seeing she wasn't that please with them. The frown on her face told them that much. Since no one wants to be on Eva bad side, they remain quiet.
She ignored them and came in between the group and the two boys. Creating some distance between the two by pushing the boys pair away from the huge group. When they were at a save distant, she gave her attention on Zach who was giving her a full smile. The little boy behind him taking him as a shield, not wanting to look up at her.
"What is your name? I'm Eva! Eva Farewell," she introduce herself proudly.
She waited for the boy to do the same but no words left the boy mouth.
"Who is he?" she asked Zach, though still doubtful that he was indeed a boy. He had long hair and a petit face like Elsa.
"He is Klaus," Zach said, taking a couple of step away from the boy so that she could see him better. To his content, Klaus didn't ran back to his initially position.
"See, he has a boy name!" she shouted to her friends behind her who were silently watching their interactions.
"Ohh Klaus!" she putted the two together.
"The Klaus you didn't stop talking about all through the holidays," Eva said.
Zach nodded. The boys met during the holidays. After Zachariah's family left china, they went to Germany and there they lived in Klaus house. Their parents were friends. Later on he was told they will come and live in their neighbourhood.
"Are you sure his is a boy though?" she asked Zach in a low voice. She just stated other wise and didn't want the others to hear that she also have doubt.
"I'm a boy!" Klaus said with a frown on his face, giving him a cuter face.
"But boys have short hair," Eva said shifting her eyes from Zach short black hair to Klaus long blonde hair which even though had being dressed in a ponytail almost reaches his bottom.
"It's not obligatory," he fired back, crossing his arm below his chest.
"O-bli-ga-to-ry," she pronounced it slowly the best she could, having no idea what it meant.
Klaus seem to have understood it, and said with a sigh, "it means that boys can also have longs hairs if they want to," he explained.
Eva thought about it, she realised it was true. She did see boys with long hairs over the television. So she nodded in understanding even though none of them was as beautiful as Klaus.
The bell rang and it was time for them to head to their different classes. They all already knew where they will have class for the next months to come, their schedule has being sent to them a week before the beginning of school. The three of them walked side by side, with Klaus still gluing on Zach side.
"Zach told me your house is beside his," Eva started to which Klaus nod.
"Which means you are rich because where Zack live is full of big houses," she added gesturing with her hands how big she was talking about. She went there so often, it was like a second house to her.
"His house is even bigger than mine," commented Zack.
Eva eyes widen, "It means you are very rich. Zack house is bigger than my house and if your house is bigger than for him, it means you are way more rich!" she beamed.
Klaus stare at her perplex, wondering why it did matter.
"Mommy always says, the bigger the house the better and that it means the person have money. Also that I should marry a man who has at least a house bigger than us," she explained to them.
"And why so much money? What are you going to do with it?" Zack questioned. Klaus nodded, wondering the same.
"Of course…" she paused coming with no idea why she need that much money for.
"To buy more sweets, ice creams and cakes?" she said or rather asked. She like everything which are sweet especially ice cream but she doesn't get to eat that often as her mother monitor with care everything that enter her mouth.
"You lack sweets?" Klaus asked.
Eva shook her head. "Then why do you need so much money for?" he asked.
"I have no idea!" she finally accepted, "but that is what mommy said and she is always right."
"Adult aren't always right," Klaus argued.
"They aren't?" the best friends asked at the same time, surprise by the new piece of information.
"No, they are not!" he insisted.
Eva and Zack share widen eyes at the sudden revelation.
"I always thought they were," Eva said as she open the class door while pondering at what he said. She wasn't fully convince yet.
The class was already filled with children but none was sitting on their desk. They were in groups, talking about their holidays. They were already familiar with each other as they were all together last year except for Klaus who was new in the country.
Eva took her place directly in front of the teacher table like she always do. She tried to have Klaus sit beside her because she already knew Zach won't want too but to her surprise, the other boy also refuse to sit at the front seat.
"You don't know what you miss," she said proudly taking her seat in front.
For her it was literally the best seat ever. You got to be right in front of the teacher, you can easily get his attention, thus he could notice if you are struggling and help you. There were so many advantages in that but no matter what she says, they heard nothing of it.
"Only you will want to sit near the teacher," Zach said and dragged Klaus at the end of the class and have him sit beside him.
Soon after, the teacher came in, the room full of students. She introduced herself and have the student introduced themselves and say what they did during the holidays.
"Who want to start?" she asked and Eva immediately raised her hands to no one surprise, and definitely not Zach.
They went on and when everyone has passed, the class began. Soon, the bell rang, it was break time. Eva was calmly putting her books back in her bag while the rest was rushing out of the class, happy to have a break from school.
"Aren't you going for lunch?" Zach asked standing in front of her desk, with Klaus beside him.
She was still sitting and haven't got her lunch box out of her back while they already had theirs in hands.
"I am," she answered taking her pink lunch box out if her bag.
"Did you really spent your holidays studying?" Klaus asked in wonder.
Earlier, Eva said she spent her holidays studying for the year to come. It was so hard for him to belief that. He never thought it was possible. Holidays was a break away from school, how can someone in his right mind spent all of it learning instead of relaxing and playing?
"Of course she did," Zach answered instead, a smile on his face.
That was his best friend . For all the time he has known her, she has always show a high interest in studying and learning new things. It was one of the things he likes about her, even though he was never going to tell her. It was much more fun teasing her about her strange choice of hubbies.
"I told you, she love school and studying," he added.
"I want to be a teacher in the future so I have to learn everything because teachers knows it all," she said with pride. It was her big dream.
"Teachers don't know everything," the boys protested at the same time.
Zach beamed, seeing that Klaus shared the same opinion as him.
"See? I always told you so but you won't believe me," Zach said.
Every time the two had this conversation, he always tell her so but Eva won't believe him. For her, teachers know it all because no matter the question she ask, her teachers always answer her.
Eva rolled her eyes and decide not to comment on that. They won't change her mind on that.
"Anyway, let go to lunch." she climbed down her chair, lunch box in hands. "But first, I have to go and get Elsa," she added.
"Elsa?" Zach questioned.
"Yeah, it her first day of school today remember,"
"Oh! I totally forgot about it!" Zach exclaimed. Eva told him about it during the holidays but it has left his head.
"Elsa?" Klaus asked confused.
"It her little sister," Zach answered "and she is so pretty, you will see and she is far better than Eva. Elsa is so kind and gentle while Eva is a brute," immediately those words left his mouth Eva step on his foot. He shouted in pain and glared at Eva.
"What is that supposed to mean?" she asked, frowning.
"See?" Zach said pointing at his feet, proving his point.
"And she is not even afraid of insect," he said pointing at Eva confused. He always thought all girls was afraid of insect. It came to his surprise that Eva wasn't.
Klaus stare at her in surprise. He was terrified by them, which was hard for him to admit since he was a boy. The little girl amaze him once again since he made her.
"One day I wanted to scare them with an earthworm but only Elsa screamed and ran away but Eva ended up catching even more than me and throwing it on me," he frown at the memory. He screamed so loud that his parents rush out to see what was going on. His brother never stopped to remind him of that.
"That was because you made Elsa cry, no one makes Elsa cry," Eva said and grabbed his ears.
"Aie!" Zach yelled. "Let me go!"
"No!" she said, dragging him, still holding his ears as they walk to the class door.
Klaus silently watch their interaction with glowing eyes. He has never had such a relationship with any one. Zach was his first real friend since long. From what he saw, he could tell they were really close, he felt so out of place, like doesn't belong with them.
"Why are you standing there?" Eva asked the silent boy who didn't move a foot when she said they were going. After a couple of steps, she notice he didn't follow them.
"You don't want to come?" she questioned.
By now she had let go of Zach ear, which the latter was rubbing with a deep frown on his face. It had turned pink. Klaus nodded excitedly and ran to them.
"You would love Elsa, she is as pretty as you!" Eva beamed excitedly.
Klaus frown, "I'm not pretty!" he argued. Be pretty was for girls.
"Oups!" Eva covered her mouth with her hands. Realising she made a mistake.
"Really?" Zach questioned.
She rolled her eyes and turned to leave when her eyes laid on a little girl sitting all by herself on her desk. She was getting her lunch box out of her bag in silence. Her eyes never wandering in the direction of the loud group of friends. Her actions was quick and quiet, as if she didn't want to be notice.
Eva frowned but quickly put on a smile, "Melissa!" she called and ran to the girl.
"What are you doing in here alone? You should come with us." She said pointing at the boys slowly coming to them.
"My friends and I are going to eat under the tree, you should join us. It isn't fun to eat all alone in here," she said, never letting her smile fall.
Melissa pause considering the offer. Under the tree were for the popular ones. They were still young but it didn't stop the establishment of popularity in school and Eva was without doubt, one of them. She was known all through the school both by students and teachers and was appreciated by all. Under the tree was her spot.
"I'm good here," Melissa declined her offer.
"Why? It so boring to be all here eating on your own. I can't let that be!" she declared, now leaving the other no choice but to follow her.
"And it will help you to have other friends than me,"
Melissa eyes widen in surprise. Eva thought that they were friends? They didn't talk often and the rare time they do so was because Eva initiated it. Melissa was a shy girl who always keep to herself.
"I'm good like this," she replied, not questioning the fact of them being friends.
"She talks!" they both turn to look at the intruder.
"What?" Eva asked her best friend with a confuse expression. What did he mean by she talks?
"She actually talk!" he said pointing onto Melissa who were mimicking Eva expression.
"I always thought she didn't because she was always sitting on her own, talking to no one. She actual know how to speak!" he exclaimed once again in surprise.
Eva frown as his comment and step on his foot once again. Zach wince in pain.
"What now!?" he cried in pain.
"Of course she does. You would have found out if you did talk to her instead as staring at her," Eva reproached.
"How could I talk to someone who didn't? It will have being rude of me," he reasoned and was wise enough to take a step away from Eva because she was about to yet again step on his feet. He collide with Klaus which was a feet behind him by his action.
"I wonder why I let you to still be my best friend, you are so mean to me," Zach pouted.
"Because no one will want you," Eva retorted.
"That is wrong, Klaus here will be more than happy," he pointed at the quiet boy beside him.
"If he don't like his peace. You are a headache," she said and turned to Melissa who was watching them with envy.
"Sorry about that idiot," Eva apologised.
She shook her head, there was nothing to apologies for because it was true. He could have said it in a better way but it was true she was always all by herself and spoke to no one unless being spoken to. And every time all she is able to do is to give a one word answer which push the people away. Only Eva never gave up on her. She often wondered why.
"The idiot and the handsome boy behind me will be happy if you come with us for lunch. Right?" she asked without looking at them. If she did, she would have notice Klaus red face.
"Yes!" they answer in unison. Zach voice louder.
"See? You are definitely coming now," she said taking Melissa lunch box on her desk and passed it to Zach who toke it. She then proceeded to hold her and dragged her out of the class.
The two boy followed right behind. Zach noticed the way Klaus was looking at Eva. He smiled,
"She is amazing right?" Zach asked Klaus as they walked behind the talking girls. Better to say Eva was talking and Melissa nodding with a smiling face.
He always admire that in Eva. It was in the same way they both became friends. He was sitting alone because his brother had fall sick and couldn't make it to school. The three years old Eva came to him and asked why he was on his own and since then, they became inseparable.
It was later that he understood why she was that way with everyone. She knew how it feel like to be alone and ignore and those, never let anyone feel it. He notice it during his almost every day of him being at her house.
"Yes," Klaus answered his eyes never leaving Eva smiling face. She was indeed amazing and hope he could resemble her in future. He was too shy for his liking and was going to work on that.
