Chapter 1 - HOW IT WAS

"Diana," Eva called in a low voice, weary of the words that were soon to leave her lips.

She was sitting at her vanity table, watching through the mirror her hair being dressed by her personal maid. The sweet aroma of the coconut laying in the air.

"Yes Miss Eva," Diana answered, oiling the little girl hair with coconut oil to braid it.

It was a two braid hairs style, one has already be done. She started to braid the second one in silence, waiting for the little girl to speak.

"Do you think mommy hates me?" Eva asked after a moment, her eyes fixed on her reflection, watching her hair braid in a protective hairstyle.

Diana pause in her action, surprise by the question. She stared at the little girl for a second, not sure of what to say or how react to that. Her face fell for a moment before she force a smile on it and got back to her work.

"Why will you think that?" she asked while braiding, purposely hiding her face from Eva who could easily tell when she was lying.

She knew why the little girl who ask that. It was obvious, she just didn't want to be involved in any of it. Her work was to take care of her, not questioning her boss parenting style.

"She went to Elsa room early this morning but didn't came to mine. Do you think she hates me? Have I done something bad?" Eva asked her head down, her eyes fixed on her laps.

She has been thinking about it all through the morning. She was up early because of the excitement. It was the first day back to school and she was so excited to see her friend again that she couldn't sleep. She heard her mother going in Elsa bed room and wait for her to come to hers but she never did. When Diana came in her room to get her ready for the day, she thought it was her mother. Her heart felt crushed seeing it was just Diana.

"She doesn't hates you," Diana said, letting Eva braid tail fall in front of her. Eva's hair was long enough to have it fall in front of her but it was the extension who made it reach her stomach.

"How could a mother hate her child? She must think you are a big girl now and Elsa is still a baby." She maintain her smile which she hold better now because at least she was being sincere, there were no way a mother could hate her child.

To her, a mother can't hate her child, she may love one more and it wasn't as if Eva's mother was trying to hide her obvious preference for the little sister. Those words, Diana couldn't say it, it wasn't her place.

"You think so?" Eva turned around, facing Diana now. Her big brown eyes glowing.

Diana nodded, "you are a big girl. She shouldn't treat you like a baby anymore,"

"Which mean I can get dress by my own?" Eva asked hopefully.

"I don't think it's a good idea." She refused.

If she doesn't get the little girl ready for school in time, she might lost her job. Eva's() mother was strict, she like everything to be done like she said and having her child late for school isn't part of her plan.

"Please Diana. I'm a big girl now, you say it yourself and so did mommy."

"You can go and help Elsa instead," she added.

"But Leila is already with Miss Elsa. And I'm the one to help you," Diana retorted. Plus letting her get ready on her on would take more time and if Eva doesn't come down for breakfast in fifteen minutes, it would be the end for her. The madam of the house won't hear any of her explanation.

"Look Diana, I'm eight, which means I'm a big girl. Mommy say it all the time." She smiled, trying to reassure her doubtful maid. She knew her mother well enough to know what would happen if she wasn't ready on time, not only to Diana but to herself. She was sure none of that will happen because she would be ready in time, they had nothing to worry about. She want to do it on her own so that she could show off to her mother.

"I can get dress on my won. You already dress my hair and gave me a bath, I can get dress by myself," she pouted. She also wanted to bath by herself but no matter what she said, Diana heard nothing of it and proceed to do like she does every day.

"Please" Eva pleaded, giving her a pitiful look. Her mother will be proud of her if she did it on her own, she was sure of that.

Diana sighed. She understood the reason behind her constant pleading. It was her way to try to get her mother attention but was it worthy for her to risk her job over it? She doubt so but looking at Eva pleading eyes, her resolved melt. She agreed. After all there wasn't much to do anyway. Her dress has already being made ready, all Eva had to do was to wear it.

"I will be in Miss Elsa bedroom," she said with a bow before leaving. She was Eva personal maid and was there to do pair to her order. If anything goes wrong, she would just explain she was following the order, she doubt it would convince her boss though. Hopefully everything will be alright.

Eva grimed fully as she watches her maid leave. Immediately Diana closed the door, she turned back, facing the mirror. She open a drawer and took out her pink journal book. She open to where she stopped earlier that morning before Diana pressed her to get ready for the day.

Today is the first day of school and I'm so excited

Eva scribble in her journal, swimming her legs while writing. The little girl started to keep a journal since she learnt how to write properly and that has being two years ago. She was a little genius and diligent with her studies which pushed her above her peers.

I'm so happy, I will see everyone once again and especially Zach. I know he will spent all the day telling me about his amazing holidays in China and laugh at me for spending most of mine studying but we will see who will laugh at who when I will be yet again the first place in class and he will be far behind.

She added with a sweet smile on her face. Zachariah, which she call Zach was her best friend since their early age. Since the first time they made, they ever separated. All through the years she made more friend but he was like her brother.

She wanted to write further but remember she had to make it fast if she doesn't want Diana and herself to have problems. She closed her journal, display her pink Barbie cover which matches with the tune of the room, but unlike her journal, her room wasn't fully pink but had a combination of white and blue.

She jumped down from her chair and ran to her closet. It was a full room with all what a little girl could ever think of. Dress was organise on the left side while on the right side where her shoes and accessories. She took her uniform out from one of the drawer and change in it. Fully dress, she took a full look at herself in mirror placed at the center of the room.

"I'm so pretty," she proclaim, which she was.

Big brown eyes, chubby cheeks and glowing dark brown skin, she look like doll. Her black curly hairs has be dressed in two big braid on her head and had it fall on her front. Her uniform, a blue and white gown matches perfectly with her dark skin.

"But not as pretty as Elsa," she mumbled, her smile falling down a little.

For her, Elsa was the most beautiful girl that exist. Her mother never cease to appreciate Elsa beauty.

"But I will also be able to make men head turn wild when I will be older!" she beamed, her smile back on her face. She nodded proudly.

She had no idea what that meant but her mother often say that when talking to Elsa and since she say that with a smile, Eva concluded it was something good.

"I should show it to daddy," she thought and ran out of her closet, leaving it open. She graded her pink schoolbag sitting on her bed cover with a pink bed sheet.

She ran out of her room, closing the door behind her. Her bag was bouncing up and down on her back as she ran, her feet hitting on the marble floor. She paused when she reached the glass railing up the stairs. She was barely its height, from where she was standing, she could have a perfect view of the spacious living room. Her mother was sitting on the sofa and was reading a book while her father was pacing back and for by the fireplace.

She ran down the stair and called for her father, "Daddy!" she said running their way. The stair lead directly to the living room. It was a spacious living room with association of neutral colors of white; grey and beige. It has two sofas facing each other with a low table between them. It was decorated with painting and green plants with a big fireplace by the center.

Her mother was the first she arrived but decided to go for her father first. She ran for her daddy but her body stop in track all of the sudden, as if the button pause had be used on her. She felt a knowing pair of eyes on her. She freeze in spot, no daring to move any further, her eyes fix on her white shoe. When she finally lift her head up and look in her mother direction, she was not surprise to see her glaring her way. She immediately look down, not meeting her mother gaze.

"How many time have I told you not to run in the house Eva?" her mother question, a deep frown on her face, displeasure written all over it. It was an expression Eva was so use to see by now.

The book she was reading way laying open on her laps. She was dressed in a simple white gown that reaches her ankle. She mirror her daughter big brown eyes but she had a lighter dark skin shade. Her hairs was straighten and her beautiful face was enhance with a subtle make up.

The little girl remain quiet, her eyes fix on her white shoes. She didn't dare to look up again, for it was a sign of disrespect when she was obviously at the fault there. In her excitement she forgot about the role.

"I'm sorry mom," her voice was little, barely enough to have her mother hear it, but she did.

Feeling her mother gaze not on her anymore, Eva lift her eye and sure enough her mother attention was back on the book she was reading before.

"I wanted to show daddy my new uniform," she said to her mother who replied to her without lifting her head from her book.

"He is busy," her mother said in a flat tone.

Eva gaze shift from her mother to her father and that was when she notice he was on phone and didn't appear particularly happy. She was relief she didn't run to him directly and has being stop by her mother. Her father hate it when been disturb while he was working. One time she did, and haven't heard the end of it.

She patiently stood still, waiting for him to end his call. She watch him in silence as he raised his voice at the person at the other end.

Her father was a tall man in his mid-thirties, handsome with his mix race black skin. He had his hair cut in light waves with mid fade. He was dress in his usual black suit, ready for work. Eva has always found her father particularly handsome, never get tired of admiring him. She love him so much.

He ended his call. Immediately he did so, she ran to him.

"Dad," she called grabbing the edge of his trouser to get his attention.

"I'm busy Eva," Her father said while tapping furiously on his phone. His phone rang again, he answered the call and walked off.

The little girl stood in the middle of the living room with her mother concentrated on her book and her father no way in her sight. The silence was growing. At lost, she didn't know what to do with herself.

"Eva!" she looked up at the sound of her name. The cheerful voice of the little girl broke the thick silence which Eva was happy for. Her face light up at the sight of her little sister.

Elsa was running down the stair, her blonde hair bouncing behind her. Eva sent a wary look in her mother direction, worry that she will scold Elsa like she did with her but what she saw was her mother smiling to Elsa while she was running to her. She had close her book and let it sit on her side.

How could she forget? The roles in the house apply to her and her only.

"Look at my uniform!" Elsa said standing in front of her big sister. She turned around showing off her also pink school bag but hers was in the shape of a rabbit. Her uniform was a skirt overall with a white shirt inside.

She was three years old and five years younger than Eva. Her long blond her has being tied in a pig tail. She had blue eyes and small pinks lips which was a contrast to Eva dark one. Her white skin was pale, enhancing her other features. Her head small, with chubby cheek which suffer under people constant pinches. It was her first time to go to school.

Her white skin was a huge contrast to Eva's dark one. Eva has a darker skin tune than her both parents which was both a mix race coming from a relationship between a black and a white person. Which may be the explanation behind the fact they had one of their daughter look nothing to their resemblance. At first Eva doubt they were even related as they share no similar feature but after the explanation of her father, she understood.

"You are beautiful princess," her father answered Elsa question out of nowhere.

Eva look up at him in shock, when did he came back in the living room? Weren't he busy? She wondered.

"Really?" Elsa question, turning to their father, giving her back to Eva.

"Really really," he squatted down and pat her head. Elsa smile in appreciation.

"Of course she is beautiful, she is my daughter after all." Their mother joined them, and stood beside Elsa, a fond smile on her lips.

"Come here," he carried her and put her on his shoulder, "I will drive you to school today since it's your first day," he said.

It has always be the chauffeur who drove Eva to and from school since she started but exceptionally today, because it was Elsa first time at school, he wanted to be there.

"But first, breakfast," their mother said to the pair.

In their strange interaction, no one seem to spare a glance at the little black girl who had her eyes fix on them the whole time. She couldn't understand what was happening. A moment ago they both were busy and had no time for her and all of the sudden here they were, giving all their attention to her little sister.

Elsa nodded and they start to walk out of the living room, Elsa sitting on her father shoulder and their mother walking by his side, they look like a happy family of three but they weren't a family of three. No one glance at Eva as they walked off, the little girl stood in place, not knowing what to do.

Her chest was burning with an unknown sensation. A feeling she couldn't identify was fast growing in her. It was not sadness nor was she angry, it was something Eva couldn't name but it was an unpleasant sensation. She doesn't want to feel it any longer. The more she look at them, the more the feeling grew, it was suffocating.

"Eva, what are you doing there? Mommy said that we can have cereal if we want. You love it the most," Elsa said still sitting on her father shoulder but was now looking at her.

Her voice made all the unpleasant feeling go away. Her smile made Eva smile as well.

She look back for me. They didn't left me alone.

The little girl thought, and her smile grew bigger as she ran to them. They had stop walking and was waiting for her.
