As Eirik continuously hoped that the final verdict would see him as innocent, the process of the trial started.
The judge first requested for the summary of the 'crimes' committed by Eirik. Agent Patel, the one who was arrested came to the podium in front of the Judge and started talking.
He first looked at Eirik with a guilty expression and then started talking. When Eirik saw his expression, he couldn't understand why Agent Patel was acting like that towards him.
What's there to be guilty about?
Wasn't he the one who arrested him?
"Lorcan Grimhawk. One of the major distributions of poisons to the public, it is believed that the Sleeping Mist Poison that affected more than 100 normal people was made by him… Another event is the Distortion Lunar Poison back in July xx, 2xxx. It was such a potent poison that it could even affect an Awakened…"
Hearing the words of Agent Patel, Eirik was shocked. Those were the events that were even put on the news. He could remember that when he heard it on the TV, he even cursed those people that committed the crime. However, it seems like he was an accomplice too in those events.
After all, he was the one who handed those poisons when those criminals bought them from his uncle.
"...After a serious investigation, it was found out that the person behind all those crimes was committed by Lorcan Grimhawk himself. He hired people to buy those poisons from him in order to cover his traces…"
Huh?
His uncle was the one who committed those crimes?
But why?
"...Though the reasons are currently unknown, Lorcan Grimhawk is to be sentenced with a 'Whole Life Sentence'."
Usually Awakened can live up to more than 100 years old, and if their level reaches the maximum, they could even live for 200 years or more… After all, the first generation of Awakened from 200 years ago that reached the Maximum Level are still alive and thriving so it is still unknown at what age they will die.
Receiving a verdict with a Whole Life Sentence means that the Government will force the prisoners to level up until they reach the maximum level so the Government can have free workers of Mana Stones Mining for a long time.
This law was done 50 years after the Awakening started when the Government discovered the Mana Stones and the benefits that they provided to the people.
Agent Patel paused talking and then looked at Eirik.
"However, it seems like there was a mistake on our part. We were not able to arrest the real Lorcan Grimhawk..."
As soon as Eirik heard the words Agent Patel, he couldn't help but look at him with a surprised face.
'I haven't even got a chance to show my System Window with the System Window Reader Device (SWRD), how come they knew that I was innocent...'
"Agent Patel, that's not something you decide. However, I will take note of your words. Now, we will hear from the accused. Defense Attorney..."
Upon his Lawyer was called by the judge, the person beside Eirik walked towards the podium.
'I haven't even met him, will he be able to defend me? Well... Agent Patel basically declared me as innocent so I shouldn't expect much from this Lawyer.'
"I am Adrian Chambers, the defense attorney of Lorcan- or should I say Eirik Grimhawk. As you can see, as soon as my client sat beside me, the Skill that was used by his own uncle wear off-"
"Huh?!"
Because of Eirik's sudden jump exclamation, his defense attorney suddenly stopped talking.
His Defense Attorney looked at him slightly annoyed.
"Quiet! This is a Court Trial."
Being reprimanded by the judge, Eirik sat down with embarrassment. However, even though he was embarrassed with what he just did, he was happy inside him.
It seems like he will be declared innocent anytime soon without even needing the System Window Reader Device (SWRD).
As his Lawyer defended him, confidence grew until...
"...However, he is indeed an 'accomplice' of Lorcan Grimhawk. According to the law, he should be jailed for a month if he was taken in custody before the legal age."
'What the heck? Isn't he my lawyer? He should be preventing me from being jailed, but he took initiative for me to be behind the bars.'
"...That's what the law says, but because my Client was accused wrongly... I proposed to decrease the time to 2 weeks only."
The Judge seemed satisfied with the proposal of the Defense Attorney. After all, Eirik was indeed an accomplice, and letting him go without serving his sentence was wrong.
Tap, tap.
"I hereby announce the accomplice guilty and should be jailed for 2 weeks from now on."
With the final verdict of the judge, the defense of the Attorney of Eirik started fixing his things and documents.
Looking at his Attorney tidying his things, Eirik was torn between saying his thanks or complaining why he even proposed for him to be jailed for another 2 weeks.
"Hey... I- I- want to thank you for defending me... but shouldn't you prevent me from going to jail?"
The Attorney closed his briefcase and looked at Eirik.
"I am just doing what I am told."
Hearing the answer of the Attorney, Eirik was confused. Doing what he is told to?
Did someone hire him on his behalf?
'Don't tell me-!'
The only person that came to Eirik's mind that could hire his Defense Attorney was none other than his uncle.
"YOU-!"
"Mr. Eirik! I did my job so I will leave now."
With a snap of his fingers, the Attorney disappeared leaving Eirik pissed off.
Eirik calmed himself down and waited for the Warden to come and escort him to his prison cell.
But before he could leave, Agent Patel came to him.
"Mr. Eirik Grimhawk."
Hearing his name, Eirik looked towards the person calling him.
"Now you finally call me by my true name..."
Truthfully, Agent Patel didn't feel any guilt towards Eirik. After all, Eirik was still an accomplice- which was no different to a criminal. However, he did commit a mistake.
"I was indeed wrong Mr. Eirik. That's why I will give you this to show my sincerest apologies."
Eirik could feel that Agent Patel wasn't really sincere in his apologies and did it only as a part of his courtesy. But he didn't reject what he just gave him.
Without saying anything anymore, as soon as Agent Patel handed a card to Eirik he left.
Looking towards the card, Eirik was confused. Why did he give him a business card?
As if to answer his confusion, the Warden beside him opened his mouth.
"You're lucky to get that. Agent Patel rarely gives his business card to anyone."
Lucky?
Was Agent Patel a powerful person in the Government?
Although Eirik was curious, he didn't ask the Warden for more information.
