Chapter 18 - Chapter 17 : The liberty is a beautiful thing to see

During this time

Rebecca:

"Rebecca, visibly returned to her normal state after the words her father said, tries to appear normal in front of Edward."

I came back.

Edward:

"Edward looks again at Rebecca's face."

I see this, miss I fell to the ground.

Your Dad put bandages on you from what I see, the injury must have been pretty serious.

Rebecca:

Yeah.

(I don't know why, the way he speaks makes me want to punch him.)

So, what should we do to pass the time, any ideas?

If there's something I hate, it's being bored.

Edward:

Oh, I don't know, why don't we talk about why you made that weird face after you came back from the bathroom, it looked like your soul had suddenly left your body so much you seemed somewhere else.

Rebecca:

(Don't even think I'm going to tell you why, you'll shut up pretty quickly when I say that.)

Girl's secret.

You're not so dishonest to know anyway, are you?

Edward:

(Girl's secret?

What could that possibly mean?

Mmm, my memories, it reminds me of terms that were used in books…

Ah, I remember it now, that's what it was then.

When she said she was feeling empty, that wasn't the way I imagined it, I thought it was because of a stomach ache or vomiting when in fact it was because of that.

I feel stupid for asking her.)

"Embarrassed, Edward did not try to find out more."

No, don't worry it's okay, sorry for insisting, I went too far.

Rebecca:

"Rebecca sits on the other side of the bed near Edward's feet."

No problem, it happens to me often anyway so you will eventually no longer be surprised like today, I hope so.

(I'm sorry, I don't mean to lie to you.

But if I don't, I don't know what will happen, I don't want anyone to find out about my past, it's probably the best thing to do.)

Edward:

If you say it, I'm willing to believe you.

"Edward think deeply about a topic that he can offer."

You asked me to find a topic to discuss, right?

Give me some time and I'm sure I'll find something.

Rebecca:

Okay, well… "Rebecca lies down on the bed, keeping her feet on the floor"… I'm going to stay close to you until you find something to talk about.

"Rebecca closes her eyes to relax."

Contrary to what you think, I didn't experience much things here so everything I know, I prefer to tell you later when the time is right for that.

I feel a little tired, maybe that plays a role too, a little bit.

Edward:

"Edward, without saying a word, remembers, with his gaze fixed on the ceiling, memories."

"Those from the flying village, especially those who show the strength of the inhabitants of the flying village."

(I wonder if the people in the village had mastered void energy, if I had been able to see a sign that they were indeed using void energy on their bodies earlier, I definitely would have been able to tell.

This is something that could explain why they were so strong, to the point that I thought for a long time that they weren't normal creatures like me.

It's true that, from this angle, their extraordinary physical strength is explainable.)

Rebecca:

"Rebecca silently began to fall asleep without Edward noticing."

Edward:

(I have nothing to lose by asking Rebecca if it's possible to see someone else's void energy.

It's certainly like the few books I've read that talked about magic, a kind of power that is visible to everyone and has a characteristic color visible to the naked eye.

It might be useful to know this so that in the future, if I ever manage to master this power, I can know which people can be dangerous in order to avoid them as much as possible.

It would be like a sort of visual alarm that would warn me of people who could kill me if I'm not careful.)

Rebecca:

"Rebecca from that moment fell into a deep sleep."

Edward:

(No need to keep asking the question in my head, I'm just talking in my head without trying to find out if what I'm thinking makes sense or not.)

"Edward stopped staring at the ceiling, this time he looked at Rebecca instead."

Rebecca, can I ask you a question?

Rebecca?

Rebecca?

"Seeing that she did not react, Edward did not insist."

(I see, she fell asleep.

Not surprising since she seemed tired after going to the bathroom, well I'll ask her when she's awake.)

"Edward turns his head at his left to look at the window on the wall, despite the pain he feels."

(It's raining, when I woke up in the forest it was still sunny.

Oddly, it does something to me to see rain falling in a place other than my village.

Really something.)

"Edward watches the rain fall for minutes without turning his head away, as if hypnotized by the relaxing sound of the falling rain."

"During this moment of pure calm, he lets it flow a few tears, letting them flow down his face without being able to wipe them away."

(No, it's not for now, I still have things to accomplish, I don't know what this world has in store for me or what I really want, but one thing is certain, as long as I'm alive, I will live to remain free no matter what.

My life as a beaten dog is over, I can finally fly with my own wings and that… "Edward looks at Rebecca, without crying out despite the pain he feels"…it's thanks to you.

I didn't tell you.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for saving me when I thought my life was going to end that famous day, Rebecca.

Thanks to you, I can hope more than ever to live with dignity without wondering the reason of my existence constantly every day.)

"Minutes passed silently under the sound of the rain which, until then, had not been noticed due to the constant noise made by their discussions."

Haahh.

(Since she's sleeping, shouldn't I do the same?

I have nothing to do anyway.)

"Edward tries to sleep without moving too suddenly because of the pain."

(I wonder how I ever slept in this position, it's too uncomfortable for a sleeping position.)

"Edward lay in this position, trying to sleep for hours without success, only spending his time thinking about the stories he had read or his past."

"Until suddenly Edward heard footsteps coming closer and closer."

"Intrigued, he stared at the entrance of the bedroom to find out who was coming towards the bedroom."

Ludo:

"Ludo was going up the stairs, when he finally reached the bedroom, he enter into the bedroom."

"Looking at Edward, he walk over to him"

Hey little guy, are you feeling better than yesterday?

Edward:

Um yes, I feel better, thanks for asking.

Ludo:

So much the better, you talked to my daughter during the morning, right?

I hope she didn't tell you too much nonsense, she tends to get excited easily when she's talking to someone she doesn't know ha ha!

Edward:

No no, she didn't spend her time talking nonsense to me, I assure you.

On the contrary, thanks to her, I was able to learn a lot of things that I didn't know and she permit me to see a little more clearly in a certain way.

Ludo:

Glad to hear it.

I came to tell you two that lunch is ready, but I see that my daughter is sleeping on the bed.

I'm going to let her sleep a little, in the meantime I'm going to bring you something to eat.

You just have to stay there, I'll come with a plate to feed you myself since you won't be able to get out of bed.

Edward:

Ok thank you.

"Ludo returned to the kitchen to bring the food back to Rebecca's bedroom."

Following these events, Edward remained for days in the inn trying to recover as best he could from his injuries in the company of Rebecca and his adoptive father, Ludo.

His interactions with Rebecca remained his main source of amusement during these difficult days for his body to endure.

He took the opportunity to learn more about the world around him, particularly about the infected, the towns and villages present in the region where Rebecca and her father live, the South Carolina.

It remained a good way to survive according to him, knowing all the dangers and territorial particularities gave him the feeling of finally understanding where he was, of finally remaining master of his choices without completely swimming in the wind.

This routine continued day after day, as Rebecca and Edward grew closer and closer.
