Lucas.
I closed the gap between us and sniffed her hair. I held her hand and led her to the drawers "So you do remember everything." She nodded, looking very excited. I smiled and pecked her cheek.
"You know, I didn't expect us to come this far. If you had an hour left to live, how would you spend it?" I asked and poured the juice into a cup. I stired it with a teaspoon and placed one in front of her.
"Hmm…let me think." She took the drink and swallowed it all at once. "If I had an hour to live, I would want to spend it with you. If I ever have something to hold on to, it would be you."
I was surprised and asked her why. I should know. Usually, when a human is asked that question, they go about talking about eating or having fame or other material things but she wanted to be with me. My stomach was heavy.
I poured her another cup, let's say another portion of wolfsbane. Now that she was a werewolf, it was more like poison to her. I felt bad, too bad and cruel for what I was doing but it was important and necessary before she went bizarre.
"Why?" I asked.
"I don't know. I have grown used to you and you have saved me from a lot. It only makes sense that I would want to spend my last days with you. I don't mean to be flirty but it doesn't mean you need to pay too much attention to me. It's not like it's happening anyway. Why do you ask?"
I opened my mouth but the words choked me in my throat. She took the cup and gulped it down. "Are you not scared that I might have poisoned you?"
She laughed. "You would never do that to me, I trust you more than I trust myself. But if it turns out that you have poisoned me then you are going to save me too so I have nothing to worry about. When you are with me, I am safe."
Her words cut deep through my heart. She had me right where I should and that wasn't playing well. "Are you okay?" She asked me and wiped off a bead of sweat from my forehead. She stood up and fetched me water.
I held her hand when she came back. "Aurora, I—" she raised her brows. "It's nothing."
My heart faced for a bit, her eyes locked with mine and her lips up close. I swallowed. "Aurora," I called again. She stood up straight and came closer. "Is anything bothering you?"
I held her waist and made her sit on my lap. I pressed her hands. "Are you feeling anything?" She shook her head. I couldn't hold it anymore. "Take a quick nap, I'll be back."
I stood up and she went to bed. I met Trevor by the door and he asked me what was wrong. It's easy to feel and see my uneasiness. "How did it go?" He said.
I ignored him and tried to move out. When he went inside, he shouted my name. "Alpha Lucas!"
I ran back to the room. Aurora was lying down on the bed. Purple glittering sparks like fairy dust lingered around her. They smelled thick and she was still fast asleep. I closed in and stood beside her. Vapor, or should I say smoke came out of her mouth and formed a little white liquid. It was the wolfsbane I put in her drink.
"Is this some sort of spell?" Trevor asked me. I shook my head. "I don't know what this is. It's like something is protecting her from the inside even while she is asleep. She probably has no idea what is going on with her."
Trevor coughed. "This stuff can kill a wolf. You might be able to withstand it but I have to step outside." He left without waiting for me.
The fairy dust has poison in them which would be very hard for a mere wolf. Just who is Aurora, who is possessing her or watching her…there has to be an explanation.
I shook her and slapped her cheeks lightly. "Aurora, wake up." She wrinkled her face and a tear dropped from her left eye. "Aurora, you need to wake up."
It took me a while but it felt like she was no longer in this realm. I shook her violently. Her eyes opened wildly with a deep gasp as if she just lifted her head from the pool.
She hugged me, her hand trembled. "Help me, help," she whimpered. The dust disappeared and the wolfsbane found its way out the window. Her eyes were shut when I looked down at her. "Please…Lucas…don't leave me. Don't kill me…"
"Wake up Aurora, I am here it's you. Open your eyes!"
She opened it and looked up at me. The tears dropped freely. She stood up and hugged me. Her hands could barely stay on my back as they trembled like a freezing chicken. "Don't leave me, please. I don't want to die. Lucas…I love you.
Wait, what?
I pulled away and looked at her. "What happened?"
She attempted to look at me but she fell into tears and hugged me back. "It's tragic. I don't know what happened, I don't know, don't leave me."
I held her close and patted her back. "I won't leave you. I'm sorry, I won't." The words came from my body and not me. I definitely won't say something like that.
The door sprung open. "I thought you were going to stay outside." The room was silent for a moment. I turned back and saw Freya frozen in her tracks as she saw Aurora in my arms. Aurora still held me like she was never letting go.
I pressed my forefinger on my lips and motioned her to come closer. Her brows raised and she tiptoed into the room. Trevor followed and settled on the sofa waving his palm around in front of his nose.
"Aurora?" I said softly.
"Hum?"
"Have your seat. You are shaking." She nodded but refused to let go of me. I lifted her up and carefully placed her on the couch.
"Do you want some water?"
Her eyes shot up and she shivered. "No! I don't want anything liquid or from a cup. I don't want to die, not yet."
I sat beside her and tried to cool her mind. "It's fine. I won't give you anything and you are not dying anytime soon okay? I won't leave you." I meant every word and I don't know why.
She shifted closer and hugged me. "Please don't leave me."
"What is going on here? I sensed something odd and decided to take a look. I thought you said she was mad or something and you were going to return her home. Why is she in your bedroom… your arms," Freya's voice echoed in the room.
"Freya, not the best time to ask your questions, darling. You look good by the way, have you been exercising?" Trevor teased.
Freya rolled her eyes and frowned at Trevor. "I have always had the perfect body, you are just too blind to see it. What are you doing here? I thought you wanted to live the rest of your life in the human world, what brought you back? I am sure Lucky didn't call you back, he didn't care where you were anyway."
If Trevor was hurt, he didn't show it. And Freya was right when he disappeared, I barely knew about his whereabouts. He was old enough and I had no reliance on him.
Things are quite worse now that I have to deal with what was wrong with Aurora. Alexander knocked and came in. He frowned when he looked at Aurora then bowed to me. Alpha, there has been another report on the death of four wolves, one of which is ours.
I raised my brows. "In Crescent land?" I asked. He shook his head. The same location, the same spots. I think whoever is doing this is just trying to get attention. Would you call for a meeting?"
I looked at Aurora. If this is somehow related to Aurora, things aren't going to be easy anymore in Crescent Hollow. "I don't know. I need to think. Surely, I would call out a meeting when the moon comes out. We have a lot to talk about."
He stood there like he was expecting me to say something about Aurora. "What are you waiting for?" Freya blurted out. The old man left.
Trevor eyed Freya.
"What?" She asked and focused back on Aurora. "What is happening, Lucky? Things are happening, strange things and you seem to know more about it than I do. I have seen you act this way before, lonely and quiet…that's when bad things happen."
Aurora was already asleep. "Freya, there is a big war coming…and it's a battle I fought two hundred years ago."
