Aurora.
Trevor came in some minutes after Lucas was gone. I remained on the bed, ignored him and pretended not to see him.
"What are you reading?" He sat on the bed's frame. "Another one of Lucas's wars I see. You want to know more about him?"
I ignored him again and focused on the book. I tried reading it Trevor already intruded my mind.
"What do you want? pretty face?" I asked. He chuckled and ran his fingers through his thick brown hair. He was nervously twisting his fingers. I dropped the book although I couldn't place what he was processing in his head, he had something he wanted to talk about.
"Spill it," I said and faced him.
"How did you do it? Finding love with Lucas?" He looked at the door as if someone was eavesdropping from the door. "Can you tell me how you met him?" He whispered.
I sighed. "What exactly do you want, Trevor?"
"Nothing, just a cool chat. I love talking to humans." He raised a brow. "Oh. Now that you're a hybrid, it makes it more interesting. I'm curious, don't you want to know anything about what you are and what we are? You are too silent for a newly turned human."
I wanted to, but hearing from him seemed like the wrong source. He also has a type of humour, one that suggests he would say more than he intends to and I wanted that. To be honest, I have wondered how they think, what they eat and the history of their existence.
I read books about wolves when I was at home with my mom and I watched movies. Sometimes, I fantasize about them, wolves…I just never knew they existed.
"You know when I first met Lucas, I thought he was one of those people who wandered around the woods and lived in them. I assumed he had a family in the woods so we became friends. I found him…interesting. Then my boyfriend fucked up and he came to my prom. Thanks to him, I wasn't savaged by my ex-boyfriend at the party."
"What did your ex-boyfriend do? Did he cheat on you?" Trevor stood up and took some steps back. He made his index finger and thumb into an "L" shape on both hands and joined them to make a rectangle in front of his face.
He squinted his eyes and looked through the rectangle he made with his hands. I laughed as he shook his ass ludicrously. "What are you doing?"
"I'm trying to find the mistake or spot in your beauty but guess what, I can't see none."
He laughed, willing me to do the same. "You sure have a sense of humour." He sat down with a smile. "Was he too blind to see the perfections in your eye?" He brushed a strand from my head and cupped my face.
"Let me tell you something, Aurora. I am glad you are here…I mean with me right now. And I have stared at you long enough to know that you have put men at your mercy, including the Alpha of the pack. But Lucas…shouldn't be with someone as good as you."
I frowned. "You don't know that!"
I rested back, taking my face off his hand. "Lucas is something important to me, he is all I have. He told me, we are going to be together…he told me we would have kids together and nothing is going to change that. Now you are saying he shouldn't be with someone like me?"
Trevor's brows curled up and everything changed so quickly. He wore a worried face but I didn't care anyway.
"You won't understand now. You don't know who this man is. Aurora, I know you won't listen to me or understand what I have to say but you would think about it someday and remember I told you so. Lucas is the Alpha of this park and has powers over everyone else. You aren't his mate Aurora, you would never be. It's his destiny and I believe he is currently with his mate as we speak."
"Enough!!!" I yelled. "You will stop this now."
He withdrew. "As you please."
I sighed, maybe I overdid it. "Look, Trevor. I understand that you care about me and you are only trying to look out for me but I can handle myself and besides, you don't know Lucas like I do when it comes to relationships. Even if what you are saying is true, that he is a very bad person and he is going to break my heart, I am willing to have my heart broken by him. I'll be fine, I love how I am living."
He nodded and shrugged. "As long as you are happy," he said with enough sincerity.
"So, I was going to ask you, what does it mean to be a mate?"
He chuckled. "I thought you didn't want to know."
"Well, it might happen to me now that I am one of you so…how do I know?" I said with a shrug.
I sat well and straightened my gown. It kept folding up with every movement. "Aurora, you don't need to know about it. You are already with Lucas and I don't think you would want to be mated to someone else that's not him."
"Does that mean he is my mate?"
He looked frustrated. "No, Aurora. You can't pick your mate. It just happens to you and you would know it when you feel it. It's a gift from Serena herself. Besides, your wolf isn't mature yet. You'll need to wolf out to get a mate."
I tilted my head. Wolf out…a mate…Serena…I would feel it. How would I feel what I don't know? And if I do feel it, would I know that is what I am feeling when I don't know what it is? It's messed up to be a wolf. Do I have to go to school or something?
Trevor slammed his palm on his forehead. "Here is the thing, I would come every day with a book. I'll teach you what you are and the things you need to know about hybrids. Is that okay?"
I nodded. "By the way, what is a hybrid? Everyone has been calling me that."
"You are not just a werewolf…you are also a vampire Aurora. That is why you need to learn what you are so you can control the things inside you." He looked towards the door. "I had to go, Lucas wouldn't want to see me talking to you. I'll see you tomorrow, is that alright?"
"Works for me," I said.
He left with a bright smile.
Half an hour later, Freya walked in with her arms folded and her brows clutched together. Then Lucas came in with a big smile. I couldn't guess if they fought or not.
Freya looked back at Lucas and exchanged some facial expressions. Hers looked like an "I am warning you," face and Lucas had the "I don't care," look.
"Hello," I said to get some attention as they both pretended like I wasn't in the room. "What is happening here?"
"Maybe you should ask him. I don't feel comfortable here. Do you want to see the city?" Freya said. It sounded more like a demand rather than a request. I nodded and stood up but Lucas came and pushed my shoulder down a little so I sat down on the bed. "You are not going anywhere Aurora."
I was mute. He is the Alpha and I have to obey him. "Lucas!" Freya yelled. It was the first time I would hear her call him Lucas, it was always Lucky.
"Get out, Freya. I want to be with her alone."
Freya hesitated before leaving. Lucas left me and grabbed a cup. He filled it with red wine and swirled it before drinking. "Do you want some?"
"No. What I want is to know what is going on and why you are picking up a fight with your sister."
"Aurora my dear," Lucas said. "I don't need to explain anything to you. Perhaps you have gotten too comfortable and you have forgotten your place. You would not step out of this room and you shall ask me no questions. Is that understood?"
I chewed on my cuticles, my gaze riveted to the bookshelf. I haven't seen him sound so…authoritative.
"Do you understand?" He repeated.
"Yes master," I said in a lower voice. He disappeared in a whoosh of black dust. He was upset with me, which I was sure of. Perhaps he heard what I said to Trevor…Or maybe Trevor told me something and now he is acting it out on me.
I sighed and went to the table where he left the half-filled cup of red wine. I took it and swirled it just as he had done. In one gulp, it tasted like the best wine I have ever had in my entire being.
A servant walked in bowing her head. "I was told to bathe you, miss," she said.
I smelled something in the air as she walked in. It filled my appetite…made me very hungry. But this smell…it wasn't food. I felt different and very hungry. I walked closer to her. "Are you okay?" I asked.
"I am fine ma'am, it's my time of the month."
I recall Trevor saying something like I was a vampire. If she was on her period then…
"Get out. Now!" I yelled.
