Silas nods.
The woman held onto his lab coat sleeve with her face down. She began to sob softly.
I look to the ground below them and saw droplets of tears fresh on the floor
"It's my fault" she mumbled loud enough for us to hear. My gaze shifts from the floor to the girl lying on the hospital bed, my heart clenches as I stare at the expression on her face. Her eyes were widened with shock and they carried bags underneath them.
Her eyes were red like she hadn't blinked in a while. She looked like a scary doll, unmoving and a frightening face. I look back to the mother, if it's a case of child abuse I'd have to report it immediately.
"Don't worry ma'am I'll handle it" Silas said with assurance. He was giving himself all the credit, where's my share?. I glare at him.
He left the woman and walked to the girl, I followed suite. I'm curious to know what happened and why the lady was at fault.
My heart beats fast as I walked closer to the bed, the suspense was killing me. I stopped in my tracks when I see Silas' eyes opened wide, I looked at the direction of his eyes and landed on the girls right palm.
Woah! I exclaimed silently. There was a big piece of glass at the side of her right palm just below the pinky finger, the wound was visibly deep and there were other signs of glass cuts. I look up at the girl, her face was expressionless and her body looked stiff
I look back to the woman, her hands were covering her face; she was probably feeling shame for this.
It must have been an abuse.
Silas reached out to her hand with his gloves and I saw a slight movement, it was like she was trying to pull away but due to the blood loss her hand was some what numb and she could only successed in wiggling her finger tips.
"Wait!" I say instinctively. Silas paused and looked at me with a frown, his brows arched in confusion.
"I...I..she's scared" I didn't even know what I was saying.
"Of course she's scared" he rolled his eyes "she's a kid, kids are always scared that's why it's your job as a pediatrician to sooth them and make them calm. I'm about doing that and you're stopping me?" He asked with that annoying voice of his
"No no I was just—" I stuttered
"Just nothing. I'll take care of the girl, you handle her mother" he commanded.
I knew where this was going, the mother's not even the patient, he plans on taking all the praise and credit while I standby and watch. Unbelievable.
I was about to decline but then the Conner of my eye caught something. A tear rolled down the child's eyes but she was stiff still. I knew it! She's scared and can't say anything because of the shock. I looked back to the lady on the chair, my sudden curiosity led me to her side.
She brought her hands down and looked at me—i felt sympathy.
"It might help if you tell me what happened instead of blaming yourself" I started.
Fresh tears streamed down her eyes.
Out of human sympathy, I reached down for my pocket and handed her my handkerchief. She takes it and blows out her thoughts. She kept it aside and sniffed.
"I...I went to the supermarket early this morning" she started slowly
"Okay...." I stressed the word to urge her.
"I asked her and her brother to clean up the shade at the backyard before going,
When I got back I saw that they hadn't done it yet so...I...I don't know I was stressed and tired and angry so I locked them in the shed and went inside the house to calm myself.
Minutes later I heard her screams and I rushed to the backyard. I saw that the glass window to the shed had been broken. I rushed in and I saw blood all over her dress and the glass deep into her palm. I... was scared. Her brother said that she was banging on the window with her first and broke through it"
I nod my head in surprise actually. This incident was somewhat rare but I'm glad it wasn't a child abuse or maybe she's lying...
"If...if" she sniffed "if I hadn't lock them in then non of this would be happening".
I lift my hand and began to pat her shoulder but it only made her cry more.
I looked over to Silas and he was whispering something to the girl that I couldn't hear. He reached out to her wrist and held it gently.
As his hand came in contact with hers, it was like life came upon her once again. She began to shake on the bed and cry loudly, her voice was loud I had to cover my ears.
The mother hearing these sounds from her child also began to tear up and cry too. It was a hell of a morning l, to think looking at sunrise would have made my day.
Silas was shocked and tried his best to calm her but she only cried louder. The wound had been open so tons of bacteria must have settled in already.
"Hush hush, there's no need to cry it won't hurt I promise" Silas said with a worried expression. It wasn't working.
He stood up and headed towards the door
"Where are you going" leaving me in here.
"I'll fetch Dr Melendez and have him handle the situation" he said loudly admist the crying.
Once he had left the sobs became more bearable. I stood up.
I stand beside the hospital bed where her left palm laid. As she wept, I took the chance to study her distinctive features. Rough black hair, fair white skin and almond eyes; quite similar to the darling I had met this morning. Perhaps that was why I felt worried at first.
I placed my hand slowly on her left hand and stared at her with compassion
