The next morning, Amber had to quickly fetch some ingredients at the grocery store and head back home.
It was her birthday and her husband promised her a date at a fancy opera house. She needed to hurry, then head back home and finish her chores before preparing for her date.
"Okay Amber, you've got a lot of work to do!" Excitement filled her eyes everytime she pictured how much fun she would have that day.
A figure bumped into her on her way to the store and she saw a lady, green eyes glaring at her like a predator hunting.
Amber instantly recognized the lady.
"Oh, uh, ma'am..." she didn't even know how to address her. She wore a knee length dress that looked so expensive. Her face was so flawless and beautiful like a goddess.
"My hero!" The lady yelled out. Some people were passing and she ran towards them pointing at Amber. "This lady, she's my hero. She saved me!"
Amber's cheeks flustered. "Ma'am, uh, please..."
"My name is not ma'am." the lady finally said after taking several breaths and relaxing a little. She was facing Amber now.
"My name is..." the lady frowned. Then she slapped Amber on the shoulder.
"Ouch! What was that for?" Amber demanded.
"I asked you to call me! I was expecting your call all day!" Yelled the lady. "Anyway, I've got a job for you. The pay is huge and well, I'm still begging my big head brother, but I'm sure he'll agree."
Amber didn't hear her well. "A job? But why?"
The lady smiled. "Because you're a good woman. And I need you close to my brother and I."
"Oh, uh..." Amber didn't know what to say. This lady is surely forward!
"So it's a deal, yes? Great! I'll see you then. Call me!" She said, then walked away humming to one of Beyonce's song.
Amber was still dazed when the lady ran back again.
"Oh, please, please, please! Don't tell my brother anything about the...well the incident when you meet him. If he asks, we met at a bar, okay?"
Bar? Amber didn't do bars. She hated the crowd! Somehow she was forced to nod her head.
When the lady had left, Amber muttered under her breath. "Well hopefully I don't ever run into you again. Such a weird lady."
Besides, she couldn't even accept the work anyway! Not after the stunt her husband had pulled. She would respect his decision to keep her marriage.
Evening came and Amber was already all dressed. She wore a long dress with a slit by the side, revealing her leg. Her hair was wrapped into a delicate bun resting at the nape of her neck.
She applied little makeup to make her face pretty.
"Whoa," Amber said looking at her face in the mirror. "You look so pretty, damn girl! I'd definitely marry you." she smiled to herself.
Amber couldn't remember the last time she'd been this happy before!
Her husband had promised to trip her out not because it was her birthday anyway. He was caught cheating on her a few weeks ago, and he promised it would be the last time. She needed to get that thought from her head.
The thought of her husband sleeping with another woman on their very sofa!
"No, no need to bring sad memories, Amber." She shook her head and smiled again to herself. "Today is your happy day. You deserve it."
"But look at the time now? He said he'd be back thirty minutes ago!" She frowned as she stared at the wall clock in her room.
"We'll just wait another thirty minutes, then you can get mad at him." She sat back on the bed.
An hour later with several calls too, her husband was not back yet! He would not return her calls either. She has called her in-laws and asked them to call Hudson as well, but they said nothing was wrong and she should stop being dramatic.
"Maybe I'll head back and remind them again." Amber said. She headed downstairs and before she could take another step to the living room, she heard Maya's voice.
"--another woman? Dude, what are we going to tell your wife? She's been bothering us thinking you're in some kind of danger."
She was on a call...with...Hudson!
"Who's that?" Sarah asked.
"Your son. He says he can't make it home tonight, and dear Amber is all dressed up." Maya said. It seemed like she had hung up because she was now speaking freely like her normal self.
"I mean, what else does Hudson have to do until that dumb girl gets it that she's useless to him! I don't like her but I would have left this marriage a long time ago if I were her." She said to her mother."
"It's because the poor girl can't conceive. Who would want to marry her? Besides, we feed her." Sarah said, then laughed.
"You know what? I don't even want her to go. Who would clean the whole house and cook for us?" she said again.
"That's true. I have grown so lazy, can't even remember the last time I did the dishes!" Maya said and they were both laughing now.
"I wish he continues like this but doesn't bring home a new wife we won't like!"
"Well I want grandkids. So Hudson must remarry." Sarah said.
Amber felt like the words were strangling her tight, and suddenly, her vision had dimmed as tears gathered and filled it. It was all too much so she ran back up and shut the door.
Every day in this house always results in her crying. Everytime, she's never happy! They always mess with her! And her husband...was cheating again???
"What will you do, Amber?" an inner voice sounded in her head.
Amber frowned. What was there to do?? What could a helpless woman like her do?
"You're a fool, Amber." the voice grew louder in her head again. "Everyday you cry like a little girl. When are you going to stand your ground! When?? You little moron!"
It was as if the voice had slapped her in the head so hard because she was now feeling a terrible headache. It was her fucking birthday, and she was crying all alone in her room?!
Maybe the voice was right.
Without thinking any further, Amber got up to her feet and ran out, ignoring the voice of her in laws calling her.
Where was she going? She didn't know! She had no money in her account, as he only gave her pocket money of a couple hundred dollars every week. So she couldn't afford to even trip herself out.
But instead, Hudson spent money for other ladies! And his family too. Yet, when she asks for money as his wife, he comes up with brilliant excuses she can't always question.
People stared at her from time to time.
"Wow, who's this runaway Disney process?" one lady said.
"Whoa mummy, she's so pretty!" she heard a small girl say too.
She couldn't help but smile. So she was pretty. She stopped and saw she'd walked a couple of miles from home.
"Okay Amber? Where are you? What the hell is your plan!" she thought. "maybe you should just go back home."
Without money, you're useless. You're useless without a child again, you're so useless! No. I won't cry again. I can still make the most of today. I just need to...
She looked around and saw she was at a big mall. Wow, if only she had money to go for a massage...
A young man along with a slender pretty lady walked out of the mall and were on their way to a fancy long car parked outside.
She was standing just outside, close to their car when she saw the lady.
"Oh, my Hero!" the lady screamed out.
However, the man beside her had his eyes wide open as he attempted to run away.
"Phone...you're the one who lent me your phone!" Amber quickly remembered him. The handsome man with the lovely set of eyes and pretty hair.
What was he doing with this forward lady? Does he have a girlfriend?
