Chapter 2 - Upgrades

After Edgar shook himself out of his shock he reached forward to touch the screen and seemed to actually feel some mass on it. Like it was actually solid even though it appeared from nothing.

He set it aside for later and turned to pick up his parents and when he picked up his mom he realized how easy it was to lift her. He wasn't sure if it was his newfound strength or if his mom had always been this light.

After taking her inside and putting her on the couch he went outside to pick up his dad and put him on couch next to the one he put his mom on. They were lying on the couches with their heads closest to each other separated by the armrests.

After checking their pulse and making sure they were still breathing he thought about what just happened.

People were dead. Whatever that blue dome was it gave him and everyone it touched whatever this blue energy was and if you could handle it you survived but if you couldn't you would die. He saved his parents by forcing the energy from their bodies to go into his and since he could still feel the energy moving through his body doing something to him he could also feel it in his parent's bodies but much weaker than before.

He moved to the front door and locked it while looking outside his window for a second seeing all the other people that survived mourning or crying over the people that they lost. Whether it was older parents, sick adults, or newborn children. He couldn't help the sadness that leapt into his heart seeing other people's lives not only disappear but the ones that did survive having to deal with the heartache of losing beloved family members.

He closed his eyes and sighed before opening them again and looking at the blue screen that was still floating around his body. He read the message again congratulating him on being the first being to survive the activation.

That meant that not only had he activated his system but he was the first person to overcome the pain and integrate whatever this energy was. After reading the message again the message disappeared and gave him a new one.

[Comgratulationd on being the first being to complete the activation of your magic system! Not only were you the first being but you were also the first human to complete it and took in two other person's magic as well!]

[You have accomplished multiple feats worthy of great rewards to help advance you through your journey! The system will distribute these rewards to you now!]

A blue flash of light bright enough to make him cover his eyes came out of the system screen before it went into his head and came back out with three things that he never expected to see in his life. In his real life anyway.

The Leviathan Axe

The Blades of Chaos

The Draupnir Ring

What the actual fuck was going on here? Why were these weapons out in front of him when they were supposed in the hands of a video game character? A new message appeared saying:

[Due to numerous achievements the system has deemed it appropriate to gift you the weapons of the being that has inspired you the most and that you believe has the power to overcome any obstacles.]

[Due to the weapons needing to be stored in a specific way based on the character these were taken from, the system will allow the Draupnir ring to double as a storage ring that can hold more storage space over time if you level up the item enough!]

This day was getting crazier and crazier. First his parents almost die, he's given a magic system, and now he suddenly has the weapons from one of the most powerful characters Edgar knew of?

"Today is a rollercoaster of events and I haven't even gone to sleep yet." After rubbing the tiredness out of his eyes he picked up the Draupnir ring and a small screen popped up above the ring giving the stats of the ring and what abilities it had.

[Draupnir Ring]

[A magical ring taken out of Edgar's memories. It has the ability to create Spartan spears that can be thrown and made to explode whenever the current Spear is slammed into the ground. Has one slot for magic attacks that cause light but fast damage and another slot that cause slower but heavier damage. Has the ability to siphon the energy of whatever it stabs and create a resistance to that type of damage for a certain period of time (10 seconds).]

Level 1(Upgradeable)

Damage: 10

Light Magic Attack: Empty

Heavy Magic Attack: Empty

[Has been modified by the magic system to allow Edgar to carry additional weapons and supplies and is possible to increase the amount of items stored if Edgar finds the proper items to upgrade the Draupnir ring.]

Edgar was shocked by what he read. It really was the same as the game! After putting the ring on his left ring finger it shrunk to fit his finger perfectly and when he tried pulling it off it came off no problem. After putting it back on he checked the stats for the Leviathan Axe and the Blades of Chaos and they were the exact same as the Draupnir ring except for their own obvious differences being that the Leviathan Axe dealt Ice damage and the Blades of Chaos dealt fire damage.

After putting both of them in the Draupnir storage Edgar remembered that Kratos had to wrap the chains around his forearm for him to use them. So after thinking about taking the Blades out his storage they automatically popped out wrapped around his forearms. The chains tight around his forearms and the hilts of the Blades hefty weight in his hands. He saw them light up with the pent up fire that they kept inside just waiting to be unleashed.

After taking a deep breath and letting it out slowly he put them back in the Draupnir storage and looked back at the magic screen.

[Congratulations on receiving your rewards! Don't stop here however! To upgrade your weapons you have to acquire the proper materials to make them stronger! You can find them naturally by fighting strong enemies or by doing quests to advance your level and to raise your stats!]

[Quest 1: Head towards the origin of the dome and defeat the boss.]

Even thought it said quest 1 there weren't any other quests. Even if there were what the hell was he was supposed to do? Was he supposed to go there just because the system said so? When his parents were still asleep? What would happen to them while he was gone? If he was this strong, even if he was made stronger from taking his parents magic, the house was still the same. If people wanted to break in what would stop them?

Just then his magic system gave him the message:

[While on a quest, if you wish it. the system may lock down your house and protect whoever is inside from people unauthorized to enter. The system will make the house unable to be entered by expelling any who is not allowed inside.]

Edgar frowned after reading that. It was almost like the system read his mind. Like it wanted him to go on the quest no matter what so it gave him a solution to the one thing holding him back from going on it. After staring at the screen for what felt like forever but was really only 10 seconds he finally spoke.

"I accept the quest. I'll go to the origin of the blue dome and fight the boss." After saying those words the system said:

[Congratulations on beginning your first quest! Your goal is to defeat the boss at the orogin of the dome. After defeating the boss you will receive more information about what is happening and why. You will also be given rewards that will benefit your journey.]

For what felt like the thousandth time Edgar sighed again. He had never fought anything before in his life. School shuffles not withstanding. How the hell was he supposed to beat whatever this boss was?

After taking another minute to think his options through he decided that staying there at home wasn't going to do anything for him and it definitely wasn't going to finish this quest. He moved towards the door and after he turned around and closed the front door before he even locked the door the whole house seemed to glow for a second before going back to normal.

Seeing that the magic system was actually protecting his house Edgar steeled his resolve to go beat whatever the hell this boss was and figure out what the hell was going on here. As he took his first step on his quest he couldn't help but think of a certain phrase a pumpkin haired lazy ass always said.

"How troublesome."
