Chapter 5 - Real Life Issues

[Gaea.]

Gaea? As in the Greek mythology's version of Mother Earth? The physical embodiment of our blue and green planet? That Gaea?

Edgar tried to ask if she was the Gaea from Greek mythology but no noise came out of his mouth. It seemed like he was just a spectator in this conversation and not a participant.

Before he could even try talking again he was yanked upwards and just as quickly found himself back in his body. It seemed like no time had passed at all while he listened to Gaea. He looked at his hand that still held the Knowledge Stone of the Earth but the one thing that was different was that now there were multiple blue lights on every continent. It was like the stone was a disco ball with how many lights were shining on it.

Is this representing more of these domes appearing all over the world? Did me completing this dome's boss fight cause more to show up or was it me using the Knowledge Stone of the Earth?

Considering the absolute lawlessness that occurred because of the magic domes he definitely didn't see it as a good thing. Thinking more about how everyone was being chaotic during this crisis he wondered if he should make an effort to calm down the city. Vigilante style.

However, the more he thought about doing everything on his own Edgar decided against it. If he did everything on his own he wouldn't be able to keep track of a whole city. He didn't have the reputation or any man power to control a city. Much less fight off the crime and lawlessness that was happening.

He decided to head home and sleep on it. He was still sleep deprived considering it was close to five in the morning and he hadn't slept at all tonight. Especially with all the stress he was dealing. Having a stronger body didn't seem to help much with his mental health. Maybe there was something in the magic store for that? He'd have to check that later.

As Edgar was about to start jogging home his attention was taken by the flashing lights and loud sirens.

Looks like after the boss fight finished the barrier that locked me in was dropped letting the police in.

This might work out. If he could convince the police that he could help them since he doubted anyone else had acclimated as fast as he did to what was going on. He just hoped they wouldn't fly off the handle on him considering the crazy situation that was going on in the county.

When the four police cruisers stopped around him eight police officers got out and pointed their pistols at him before yelling "Drop your weapon and get on the ground!"

...seriously?

"Seriously?"

"I won't tell you again! Put your weapon down and get down with your hands behind your head!"

"The city is in chaos right now and you think it's a good idea to waste your time on me? I'm in the middle of a fucking field with no one around and you come here with eight police officers thinking this was a good use of your time!?" He couldn't help but shout at them. Edgar couldn't believe that instead of asking him what he was doing out here they immediately assumed that he was doing something that necessitated eight officers' attention.

Edgar continued "I just finished fighting three worm monsters. That's why you were all able to get to me after the barrier went down. It was for a quest that I was given by the magic system. You're all alive and moving so that means you all survived having the magic integrate in your body right?"

The officers were quiet until one younger female officer that seemed to be more nervous than the others said "Well now that you mention it we were all talking about how we feel lighter than ever even though we have all this equipment on. After we got hit with that blue dome we were all in pain but we don't know exactly what happened. Do you know?"

Edgar nodded. "It's going to sound crazy but you all have access to a magic system. The strength and greater stamina you have is because of the magic that became integrated into your body. That's all I know for sure. Everything else is something I'm still figuring out."

The officer to the right of her was an older black man that seemed like he'd been part of the police force for a lot longer then his partner. He spoke and said "Sounds like you know a lot about what that blue stuff is. Were you part of the people that caused it?"

Edgar frowned. He understood that line of reasoning but really? He was just as old as that officer's partner. How the hell would he be involved in something like this? "No I'm not. I don't know if you've interacted with the magic system that much but if you pay attention to the prompts it gives you you're able to piece together what's happening to you."

"Prove you're telling the truth."

"How the hell am I supposed to do that?"

"Come down to the police station and I'll trust you."

"Yeah hell no. I haven't done anything wrong. If anything you should be thanking me for fighting and killing dangerous monsters that could've caused more damage to the city."

Edgar pointed at the two intact worm corpses. He wished the third one was still there but it broke into ice and melted. The officers all looked at the carnage behind him before looking back at him. The same black officer asked "You swear that we can trust you?"

"I promise. If anything I just want to help get everything back to normal. Or as close to normal as we can get anyway." Edgar put the Leviathan Axe back in his storage before slowly raising his hands to show he meant it. "Promise."

The officers put their weapons down after waiting a moment. Making their decision that if this kid who looked just as young as their rookie was as dangerous as the destruction behind him showed, then he didn't have any need to convince them of his kindness since he could just as easily kill them like he did those huge worms.

The officer Edgar had been speaking in to this whole time walked up to him before introducing himself as Officer Johnson. His partner was his rookie named Officer Jensen. The other officers introduced themselves as well but those were a lot of names to remember...

"Look I know it doesn't seem like it but the world is basically becoming a video game. I don't know why it's showing itself to us this way but with everything that's happening it's actually very helpful and you can benefit a lot from the information that it gives you."

He took the healthstone out of his storage and gave it to Officer Johnson. After handing it to him Edgar saw his face take on a shocked expression even though no one else could see what he was seeing right now.

"What you're probably looking at is a prompt from the system giving you information on whatever magical item you're holding." Officer Johnson passed it to Officer Jensen before her expression became shocked as well. One at a time every officer got their first look at the system screen pop up.

After putting the hearthstone back in his ring storage Edgar said "Since it looks like you guys haven't seen the system until now I actually have a deal I'd like to make with you guys. If you let me work with you guys to help get the county under control I can show you guys more about the system and how the benefits work."

Officer Johnson thought about it some before saying "While I don't think it's a bad idea that's not a call that I can make. You need to talk to the chief of police since you're a civilian and a particularly dangerous one considering the damage behind you."

"That's fair. Do you guys have anything I can use to keep in touch at least? I'd hate to be told to talk to your chief of police and not have a clue where to go or where my new friends might be." Edgar smiled at his small joke and even though Jensen smiled a bit Johnson didn't even crack a bit.

"Jensen. Pull out one of the extra walkie-talkies that we have in our patrol car. Give it to him."

Jensen did as she was told and after a few seconds of searching she came back out with a bigger and blockier version of the walkie-talkie that she had strapped to her chest. She handed it to Edgar while explaining that it was an older walkie-talkie which is why it's much bigger than their regular ones.

Edgar thanked her before saying "Well as much as I would like to continue talking I really think I should get going. I haven't slept in eighteen hours."

Johnson raised an eyebrow before asking "This county hasn't gone to shit for that long. What were you doing before the world went to hell?"

Edgar scratched the back of his head with some embrassment. How would they feel knowing that the person that caused the damage to this field was playing video games a few hours ago? He decided not to say anything before essentially disappearing to the officer's eyes. With his level gone up to Level 4 his speed was so fast that he left a blur to their Level 1 eyes.

As Edgar ran home he hoped that the protection to his home would continue throughout the night. He really needed a good night's sleep.
