Chapter 5 - Soul Beast Attack (1)

Unexpectedly, the horse's speed slowed down.

During these past few days, the horse only slowed down twice daily, one in the evening to eat their food while the other one was at night for the men to take turns sleeping.

Just as everybody inside the carriages was curious about the reason that caused them to slow down the horse.

The leader's voice sounded out to remind his subordinates "Be careful, we are in the soul beast territory right now." everybody was aware of this as it was not their first time to bypass this place, but you can't never be too careful.

One mistake could cost you your potential future or even life itself, that was especially true for a soul cultivator like them, you couldn't trust anything in this world not even your own family just like how these bunch of kids got sold off to their organization by the orphanage that took them in.

...

Soon enough, the sound of a beast roaring resounded into everybody's ears, it was so loud that it could burst your eardrum if you were to be too close to them, but luckily they weren't.

"Stop the horses!" He shouted.

As the horses stopped their movement, they hopped off their horse's back and stood in front of the carriage.

"Cover your ears, kids." Their leader warned the kids inside the carriage quietly.

Hearing this the kids inside the carriage immediately covered their ears with trembling hands, they could feel their heads shaking along with the hand, and each had their eyes closed except for Zheng Lin enchanting the other sense of them allowing them to hear the footstep of the so-called unknown soul beast that was approaching at a fast pace.

Zheng Lin's eyes were opened widely, he stared hard into the direction that the beast was coming from trying to see through the blindfold that was blocking his sight.

Just like every other kid, he was scared, but so what? being scared won't change anything instead it would affect your actions and decisions, so whether or not he opened his eyes won't mean a thing to this situation.

Besides the fear that he tried hard to suppress deep inside him, was him being curious about what it was, why the man called them this way, what did they looked like, and many other things.

Back in the day, he often spent his time playing with the small wild animals in the backyards of the orphanage, when the caretaker saw this he approached Zheng Lin and warned him to stay away from the forest as he could possibly encounter a wild beast inside it and get killed by them.

He described some of them as being huge and deadly or small and venomous, the young Zheng Lin was so scared back then that he stopped playing with the wild animals, and from that day onward he never dared to wander off into the forest or even just around the backyard.

Eventually, the fear turned into curiosity, at first he tried to get the caretaker who warned him about it to talk about them but he always found excuses to avoid these topics.

Until he was too fed up with Zheng Lin who kept bothering him, that he told him about the wild beast that he used to encounter back in the past, he started off with the most common ones, like the wolves that hunted in groups, the snake that could get you be to immobilize for the rest of your life just by simply biting you and plenty more in the book that he gave to him as he was too lazy to continue talking to him.

His curiosity did not stop there, he began to explore the forest deeper and deeper, but to his disappointment, he found nothing that could be categorized as a wild beast, his body was always covered in bruises, so he was caught one day by the caretaker, thus his exploration journey ended there.

thinking back, he was courting death at that time without even realizing it, but thankfully to his luck that kept him alive to these days.

...

"Get into a battle formation!" The leader gave an order loudly.

Everyone got into their battle position, took out their major weapons, and just stood there anxiously waiting for the beast to arrive.

Without waiting for too long, the beasts ran out of the forest and stopped advancing.

"Hah... it's just three low-ranks one soul beast." Seeing that the beasts that came out were just low-rank ones, the man spoke in relief.

The beasts didn't start attacking instantly, they were a bit hesitant after they saw that the human enemies who were supposed to be their food outnumbered them, but it only lasted for a short while before the beast in the middle who seemed to be the leader of this beast group roared into the sky.

The roars as if it were a war drum indicated the marching of the soldiers, the beasts roar one after another and sprint directly to the men.

"Target the two beside it first." The leaders who were positioned at the back shouted when the beasts were closing the distance.

Hearing this, the other man also said to his subordinate "You two go and help them."

There were a total of six men in their team, four were running toward the enemies while the other two who just gave order were standing behind them.

The beasts after witnessing this roared even louder, thinking that the two who stayed behind were the ones these humans needed to protect, so it was just a matter of time before they won this battle.

The four "bodyguards" each had their ear bleeding from withstanding this loud sound up close, but they didn't stop in their movement, instead they closed in even faster for fear that the beast would continue roaring.

When they reached face-to-face against each other, the beasts jumped forward toward them intending to overpower and instantly kill these soon-to-be their foods.
