The moon rested high above the city, tinting it with the silvery light of night. Melissa looked at Sophie with some intensity and asked.

"Have you ever met a Witch?"

Sophie stirred the cocktail straws and paused to think. "Once, a long time ago, my brother and I met a woman on the street. She called herself a witch. She offered to see the future for a price."

―Your story together is clouded.

Sophie took a sip and sighed. "But she turned out to be a swindler, more skilled in the art of emptying pockets than predicting fates."

Damien and she were children then, playing among the trees near the house. She remembered the day she asked her brother, out of curiosity, to pay the old woman to read their future.

The old fraud's words were meaningless to her. She still harbored some resentment for her ignorant decision.

Melissa let out a scornful snort and waved her hand as if to shoo the words away.
