Chapter 17 - The Secret Cabin

When we watch movies, it is so easy for us to comment on them. It is so easy for us to scream at the characters for walking into rooms they know they aren't supposed to be in. In real life however, things are quite different. You take risks for the people you love. You take risks to figure out the twisty truths that have kept you on the tip of your toes for so long. That's what Henry did. He took the risk. He went into the secret cabin, without fearing for his life whatsoever.

"The room lit up as soon as I walked in. It was censored. I immediately looked around for cameras. I wanted to make sure no one would ever know I was in here. There were a million screens pointing at me. The tiny screens covered the walls of the cabin like wallpaper. They were camera feeds. I didn't realize it at first but when I focused on one particular one, I couldn't believe my eyes. It had the date of the day after Emilia and Sammy were taken. I saw her, Neil. I saw Sammy. Emilia's footage was probably on another screen. I zoomed my eyes to make sure I was seeing correctly. Her hands were tied behind her back. I bet they hurt a lot. Her eyes were red with crying and her hair was a mess. She was screaming something but I couldn't hear it. I looked for the volume button, praying that the room was sound proof. "Leave her alone!" She screamed. I felt helpless in that moment. I thought she was looking right at Emilia and asking the pawns to stop harassing her. This was more than just harassment Neil. I zoomed in on another slide. There was blood everywhere. I screamed in terror. The pawns eventually showed up at that scene and started cleaning up the mess. I was so confused about what was going on. On another screen, I saw a woman being beaten up. When I watched closely, I couldn't help but notice that the pawns were asking her something. I turned up the volume again. 'Say that you volunteer and you will be spared. Deny us and this will be your fate'. A chill ran down my spine. They wanted the women to sign their own death warrants. They didn't want to force any of them. They wanted to make sure that the women were willing to sacrifice their lives or die denying. I couldn't figure out where they were going to take them. What were they being forced to volunteer for? I opened another screen and I saw an older woman with a girl. She felt clueless. She was screaming in pain. The pawns came in and took away the little girl who was with her. The older woman was screaming out a name but I didn't have the heart to turn up the volume. I finally built up the courage and that's when I heard your name. I believe it was your mother and your sister, Jane. I am so sorry Neil. There was no way for me to help them. Your mother sat there in defeat for so long. That's when they came back. I had been told by the warden that only the ideal woman had to be chosen. I wondered what they did to the parents and the ones that got caught up in the cross fire. I only averted my eyes for a second Neil. I saw blood, in the same screen as your mother's. I am sorry Neil I don't know what to say. I am sorry but I have to continue telling you what I saw. The next screen I saw showed me Lila. She wasn't the ideal woman. She only got caught up in our investigation or else she would've been safe here. She is gone too Neil. I watched them drag away her body myself. I feared Sammy's fate. I crossed my fingers and hoped she would be okay. The feed changed up. There she was again, Sammy. When she saw them take Emilia she screamed, 'I am willing! I volunteer! Take me too'. The pawns looked at her for a second and then left. Two minutes later, they were back with another woman. She had a mask on her face and a hood on her head. She was wearing a long black dress which slit in the middle of her thigh. She stood in front of Sammy, looking at her up and down. She nodded and then went on her way. One of the pawns said, 'you are lucky you got chosen. We must have really skilled workers to turn this wicked witch into a princess'. I wondered what he meant. They took Sammy, just like the rest. I had been in there for a long time and I had to leave as soon as possible. I peeked through the door to see if anyone stood outside. Seeing an empty hallway, I made my escape. An hour later, the same woman I saw on the screen stood before me, masked yet beautiful. The black dress fit her body perfectly. Everyone was staring at her beauty, secretly admiring her. She pointed at me. The next thing I knew, the pawns were lifting me up on their shoulders, celebrating my promotion. I was extremely confused. One of them said that she took a liking to me, that's why I was promoted. 'With promotion came great responsibility', said the warden. Through all this confusion, terror, horrible images in my head, celebration of the promotion and the pizza party I was forced to give to my subordinates, I couldn't make it here on time. I was back later on to find out that all my things had been shifted to my new place in the professor's quarters. It is going to be very difficult for us to communicate after this. I will always be in front of them. You will rarely get to keep an eye on me. I have to leave now, before they get suspicious again. I am sorry for your loss, Neil. We will try to save the rest of them."

Henry's explanation of the secret cabin brought tears to my eyes. In the blink of a second, I was orphaned. I bid him good bye as I locked the door behind me, wondering what would have been my fate if I just stayed in the house the night of my father's accident. I am the reason behind their deaths. I had to carry the burden of my father's death already, but the burden of my mother's and Lila's death made me want to die.
