Chapter 6 - Chapter Six

CHAPTER SIX

It had been a few days since Carl's conversation with Rogers. That conversation had settled some internal conflict that Carl had been having and he was sleeping better now.

His nightmares had reduced and the cruises he sustained were fading. He thought about what he would do to Bethany and Matt. The thought of getting them arrested crossed his mind but he decided against it.

What he would do to them had to be planned out. He wanted to make sure he made them suffer slowly without them realizing it just as they did to him.

The fact that he was betrayed by Matt still haunted him. He and Matt and been inseparable since they both grew up at the same orphanage home. Matt always had his back and the both of them were as thick as thieves.

Now that he thought about it, he should have suspected something but maybe it was because he trusted Matt blindly. There were a few times when he had come home and met Matt there. Matt had claimed he was waiting for him to get home.

There had been many instances where he should have known there was something wrong but he didn't. Now, he had lost his wife and so called best friend.

Earlier on, he remembered that Beth had bragged one day about landing an interview at a big company. He remembered that she had said Stewart Industries. Well guess who was the heir of Stewart Industries.

He asked the bodyguard at the door to get Rogers. Whilst he was thinking about a very good way to get back at them, he could begin scattering her plans.

Rogers entered the room and he turned his chair to face him.

"Young master, you sent for me. "

"Yes Rogers. I need you to do something for me. Has any interview been conducted recently at the company?"

Rogers looked to the side, lost in thought.

"No sir. The last interview was months ago but there's another coming up next week."

Carl smiled. Perfect, he still had enough time to deal with her.

"There is a woman named Bethany Marks. She will be attending the interview as well. Now listen Rogers, I don't care about her qualifications or connections. You make sure that she suffers and at the end, don't give her the job."

Rogers stared at Carl for some seconds before he nodded. Working for a rich family like this had taught him not to ask questions. Most of the time, things were better left unsaid and unknown.

"Your wish is my command, sir."

He was on his way out of the room when he stopped and turned around.

"Sir, you've been in your room for almost a week. I would recommend you go out and get some fresh air. It would help you to clear your head and feel at ease."

Carl wanted to decline but he had a second thought. He really wanted to think about something else rather than his complicated situation. He looked at Rogers and nodded.

"Wonderful, I'll get the car ready. The maids will come around to get your outfit ready."

Carl was in the bathroom when he heard the door open, he knew it was the maids. He decided that he would go to a restaurant for lunch.

Because of the weight of things on his mind, he forgot to take his nose mask along or look for some way to cover his face.

It was only when he had come out of the elevator and he saw Bethany and her mother approaching the reception that he realized his face was not covered.

Just as he was about to walk back into the elevator, he heard the voice he had been dreading.

"Carl? What in the world are you doing here?"

He turned around to look at her and he could feel the anger bubbling inside him.

She burst out laughing and then her mum came to stand beside her.

"Mum look, it's my wretched excuse of a husband. Oh sorry, ex husband. "

Her and her mother burst out laughing loudly making people turn around and look at them.

"What do you want, Bethany?"

Beth scoffed.

"I should be asking you that. What are you doing at a place like this? Don't you know where you belong?"

Carl wanted to tell her who he was so bad but he stopped himself. It was not time yet.

"Have you gone deaf too? Where did you get that cheap suit? I'm sure you stole it because you're so poor you can even feed! "

"I warned you not to marry him. I wonder what you saw in him. You deserve to be in prison, you'd be doing the world a huge favor if you weren't free to roam the streets. I hate you so much."

The words of Bethany and her mother always had a way of getting under his skin and he hated it. He wished he had never met her and her family.

Bethany represented everything he detested in life and he wanted to just forget that he ever had anything to do with her.

"You ruin my mood with your presence, Carl. I came here to book a hall where I'll have a party to celebrate my new name and single state. Now that I think about it, I was probably bewitched into marrying you. Matt was right, you have always been a loser. He warned me not to marry you but I didn't listen. "

Carl couldn't believe his ears. Matt had told Bethany not to marry him?

Her mother held her hand.

"C'mon Beth. Let's leave this weasel alone. We came here for better things."

Beth walked away leaving Carl standing there. He was hurt deeply by her words but he didn't want to say anything to her directly so he went back to his room and placed a call.

"Roger, I need you to do something for me. There's a woman here to make a reservation under the name of Arlington. Make sure they do not get a space. No matter what sfe says, turn her away."

Roger went to work right away and when he got a call that it had been done, he felt at peace.
