Chapter 9 - Chapter Nine

CHAPTER NINE

The ride home was silent. Bethany was fuming and she was so angry she couldn't talk. When she got home, she got down from the car and slammed the door shut, making her way into the living room.

Her brother, Justin was there and he looked up at his mum and sister who entered the house with sullen expressions.

"What's going on?" He asked them.

"You won't believe what happened to us today! We went to a hotel to book a hall for my party only for us to be told that they had given the hall to someone else!"

Justin dropped his phone and looked at them.

"What? Didn't you tell them you were taking the hall?"

Bethany sat down beside him and huffed heavily.

"Of course we did! But the stupid receptionist said that since we didn't make payments for it, then she can't do anything about it!"

"What's the name of the hotel? Don't they know who you are?"

Bethany asked the maid to bring her a glass of water.

"Its The Golden Hotel. I tried telling her but she didn't even listen to me. Heck, I even bribed her with a thousand dollars but the bitch didn't even listen! She called security on us and got us thrown out of the hotel!"

"Because your sister couldn't keep her mouth shut, we've been banned from coming there again. She threatened the receptionist!" Her mother chimed in.

Justin never saw anything wrong in anything Bethany did. To him, she was always his innocent younger sister.

"Mum, Beth did nothing wrong. The receptionist probably said something to get her angry."

Beth placed down the cup of water after emptying it.

"Thanks Justin. Mum always thinks I'm the one at fault. We probably had bad luck because of that fool we saw earlier on."

"What fool?" Justin asked.

"My useless excuse of an ex husband. We saw him at the hotel, dressed in a cheap suit I'm very sure he stole. Gosh, I hate him so much! He irritates me!"

Her mother smiled as she spoke.

"I'm so happy you can finally see him for who he is. I warned you before you married him but you didn't listen. Maybe if you had listened to me, you wouldn't have ended up with a useless husband you had to divorce in the end."

Right from time, her mother had been the number one campaigner against Carl. She hated him the moment Bethany brought him to dinner that Christmas. He had no job, no generational wealth, nothing to his name. When dinner was over, her mother had called Bethany and asked her if he was blackmailing her with something.

She had denied it and told her mother that she loved him truly. She didn't care if he didn't have money as long as she did. She tried so hard to make her mother see that there's more to Carl than his financial status.

She gave up at the end because Bethany refused to listen to Justin as well. Bethany's mother had always hoped that the marriage wouldn't work out and she always told Bethany that as soon as she was tired with the marriage, she would support her in divorcing Carl.

When Bethany called her and told her that she was ready for a divorce, she didn't waste any more time in calling the family lawyer and telling him to prepare divorce papers.

"I had always hated him too. He wasn't out class and he was a golddigger. The way he thought he could marry you and start enjoying your wealth, is disgusting."

One of Justin's friends expressed his desire to marry Bethany but before he could tell her, Bethany brought Carl home. Justin still tried to convince her and his friend tried to change her mind with gifts and money but none of them got through to her.

"You know, that friend of mine is still interested in you. AlI have to do is give him a call."

Bethany turned him down, telling him that she already had someone in her life. Her mother made a joke about the new man being even poorer than Carl and they all laughed.

Bethany's phone pinged and she looked at her phone for some seconds before getting up and screaming in excitement.

"What? What happened?!"

"I got an email to come to the interview! This company is a very big company and only the best pass the first stage!"

Her mother and brother congratulated her and asked her more questions about the company.

"It's Stewart Industries and it's for the post of personal secretary for the CEO. I knew I was going to get it, after all I'm the best."

"Don't worry, I'm going to pull all my strings to make sure you get the job. I'll call my friends." Her brother assured her.

"Yes baby, you should take the job. I'm sure the pay would be very good and it would give you the chance to meet very rich men. Maybe you'll even get to marry the CEO."

That was all her mother ever talked about, marrying a rich man. That was the same way she had married her husband, it had never been about love. As long as he had enough in his bank account, she married him and her joy knew no bounds when he died, leaving her with all the money he had.

It was only then she found out that he was in huge debt and almost all the money he had was used to settle the debt. At least, she was left with the company.

Beth excused herself and went upstairs. She placed a call to Matt because he was the one that had told her about the opening because according to him, he knew the CEO so he was sure she was going to get the job.

Bethany asked him if he was going to be available to accompany her on the day of the interview so that while she was being interviewed, he would go and have a word with the CEO.

From Matt's response, Beth was sure she would get the job and for that, she was happy.
