Tomorrow came faster than expected but I was up and strong in no time. I remembered the meeting I and Kyle were to have later during the day and I prayed silently within me that Olivia should step into the library. The look on her face would be priceless.
Suddenly aware that I had to catch up with the bus, I hurried into the bathroom. After a nice shower and a brush of teeth, I picked out my outfit for the day. I stared at my reflection after I'd dressed up. A white top with a black jacket on a pair of black jeans and knee high sneakers was a good way to start the day. I brushed my long brown hair smoothly, untangling each knot. I stared at my reflection, those amber eyes peering back at me.
"Today's another day, Avril Scott," I said to myself, "just keep it cool."
"Avril," Dad yelled from downstairs, "come have your breakfast quick so you won't miss your bus."
"Okay," I yelled back.
Dropping the brush on the dresser, I picked up my backpack and went downstairs to the dining room where Dad was sitted at the table.
"Good morning Dad," I greeted, hugging him as I did and he in turn hugged me back.
"Good morning sweetheart," he replied, "how was your night?"
"Beautiful, you?" I asked taking a sit at the table.
"Well, it was okay," he managed to say.
"In irony," I commented and he let out a chuckle.
"You know me too well, don't you?"
"But of course, you're my dad."
------------
I sat opposite Kyle in the library during lunchtime. I didn't expect time to fly so quickly. I wondered why I consented to us using lunchtime to work on project 'cause I felt a bit hungry bit then for the sake of high grades, the hunger can wait.
"I made some research about the American revolution yesterday. I made some notes 'cause I wasn't able to bring my laptop to school," I said handing over the notes I made from the previous night.
"Why didn't you? There's no restriction against laptop usage in S.S.H" he said.
"I know that. It's just I slept off while using it last night and when I woke up this morning, the battery was flat," I explained.
"Oh, that's okay," Kyle said. I studied him as he read through the notes. He had on a royal blue hoodie on ash cargo pants and white sneakers. I'm no cloth critic but I kinda like to the way the royal blue flowed with his eye color.
"I have an idea," he said, "how about we visualize our work with a projector. Then we could show some illustrations too."
"That... isn't a bad idea. It's nice. I like it and..." I was cut off when a hilarious wail erupted in the library. I thought for a while who it could be but...
"Oh no." I muttered out loudly.
'They're here?' I thought within me.
"Excuse me for a sec," I said and got off my seat. I marched to the far end of the library, at a corner where a desk stood. On getting there, the sight set before was...wow. Monica had pinned Miles on the table which meant that freightful cry came from Miles?
"What in Sinbad's name is happening here? Monica, why did pin Miles down on the table?"
Mrs. Edmund had put Monica and Miles as partners on the topic 'the World wars'. As far as I know, there are three world wars but putting these two together on a project would form a fourth world wars.
"Well this dude over here wouldn't stop teasing me and beating my eyes with his drumsticks." Monica protested.
"I wouldn't have done that if you were not singing in my own ears before that." Miles retorted.
They were going to dive into another quarrel again but I wasn't going to give them to the chance.
"Both of you please, I'm working on my project over there and I need full concentration. Besides you both should work on yours too," I told them.
"Sorry Aves. We got carried away," Monica apologized.
"Yeah kiddo, we'll be quiet," Miles saod in a hushed tone.
"Thanks a lot," I appreciated and went back to my table but Kyle was no we're in sight.
"Where could he have gone to? I hope he didn't ditch the work on me.
"I'm over here." His voice called out. I turned my neck towards the left and he was there just checking out some books. I walked over to him.
"Did you find anything about our topicyet?" I asked.
"Nah, I haven't," was the reply.
"I'll go check out the other shelves," I said and walked past him, the scent of his perfume teasing my nostrils as I did.
I began to look through each shelf but found no book that had anything related to the American revolution in it.
"Maybe we were searching in the wrong part of the library," I mused.
I walked a bit further till I got to a shelf that was fixed into the wall unlike the other shelves that stood independent.
"The school really is something," I muttered before checking through it.
I checked the bottom row, then the third and the second but found nothing related to the topic. I felt a bit discouraged when I saw the first row but I still had to give a try.
I searched through the content of the first book and then the second but when I got to the third, it just wouldn't budge. I tried to pull it out but instead the shelf moved aside revealing a deep tunnel. Startled, I jolted back. I never saw it coming.
A tunnel? In the school's library? How?
"What was that?" Kyle came running and faced me from a side. He was yet to see the tunnel. I merely pointed a finger to what was before my eyes.
His eyes slowly followed my hand and when he did see it;
"What the heck," he said surprised.
"A tunnel in the library? How?"
"I don't know. I just pulled at a book, the shelf moved aside and bam! That happened," I explained.
"This is insane," he put in.
"What made that noise?" Miles and Monica came running. Did the shelf make that much noise?
On getting to the tunnel, their jaws dropped in shock.
"Oh my goodness, that's a tunnel." Monica was the first to speak.
"But what's it doing here?" Miles asked to no one in particular.
"I don't know but I'm about to find out." I responded, walked to the table where I sat, picked up my backpack and hurried back to the 'shock scene'.
"Don't tell me you're going in there," Kyle said in disbelief.
"Why not?" I asked him.
" 'Cause it's dangerous," Monica said.
"Look we just found a tunnel in our school's library, doesn't that seem weird to you?" I asked all of them and they were silent for a moment.
"It does seem strange but what if it leads to the school's water plant?" Kyle asked.
"The school's water plant is behind us. This tunnel leads forward," I pointed out.
"I think we should report to the school authorities," Monica suggested.
"They built this school, so there is a 99 percent probability that they know,"
Olivia intruded into the library but not the time I'd prayed she'll show up. She was shocked, I'll tell you that.
"I'm going in. If you want to tag along, be my guest," I said.
Monica sighed. "Oh Avril! For you, I'll come along."
"Yeah me too," Kyle said and one by one they all began to comply.
"You're letting the witch come onboard?" Miles asked me with a skeptic look at Olivia.
"She's going in there for Kyle. She'll be no problem, hopefully," I said unsure for a second.
"Alright then let's march," Kyle said aloud like some army commander.
Lined up in a row, we stepped into the mysterious tunnel unaware of what lies ahead.
