Chapter 9 - 8 Suicide mission II

______

"This place stinks," Olivia cried.

"You got that part right. Like decayed fishes swung out of the lagoon," Alex said as they walked through passageway.

"There can't possibly be skeletons in here, right?" Olivia asked in fright.

"The markings say so but I don't want to believe it," replied her male partner.

"Me too."

They made their way in the passage with the help of their phone torches.

Snap!! Something had splitted in two.

"I think I stepped on something," Olivia said as though she had lost her voice.

Their phone lights moved immediately to the occurrence scene revealing a bone on the floor. Alex flashed his light ahead of them. Heaps of bones were piled up around them.

"Dear God," Olivia cried in fright.

"Whatever you do, don't make a sound," Alex warned.

"How can you expect me to be quiet in this situation?" Olivia said trying her best to whisper.

"Don't say a word," Alex warned again.

The whole place was silent and they each took careful, painstaking steps onwards.

Snap!! Another bone broke in two.

"Oops! Not again," Olivia muttered.

The inhabitants might have thought they had exceeded their limits as the rumbling sounds could be heard. The bones began to connect and before long an army of armed skeletons had aroused before them.

"Great Neptune," was all Alex could say as he swallowed hard.

______________

"You chose to follow me because you were avoiding Olivia, right?" Monica asked as they made their way through their allocated passageway.

"Obviously. She's a pain in the neck," Kyle said.

"She likes you," Monica said.

"A little too much," she added.

"Yeah well, too bad," Kyle replied casually.

"Tell me something; how do you manage to remain calm always? I mean we are literally going on a life risking mission and you talk, and act, as though we're going to play chess or monopoly," Monica said.

"Don't know. Guess it's in the blood," was the reply and Monica nodded.

"About your friend..." Kyle began.

"Which?" Monica asked.

"Avril, is she always like that? I mean is she always so daring and likes to go head on with danger?" Kyle found himself asking much to his dismay.

"Yeah, that's how she is; daring, bold, ready to take risks for those she love...I admire her really but then, why do you ask?" Monica said.

"Nothing I just like it," Kyle said and increased his walking pace.

Monica paused for a while and couldn't help but smile.

"Aww," she muttered to herself.

"Hold up Mr. K, come repeat what you said," Monica said hurrying after him.

__________

"Avril I gotta tell you something," Miles said as we walked through our passageway.

"What's it about?" I asked.

"It's about Miles."

"What about him?" I asked.

"Look, I find him really suspicious," Miles said.

"I do too but why do you say so?" I asked.

"You see two years ago before you came into S.S.H, Alex was still a student at our school, an active one at that. He was even on the basketball team but then on a particular day that the school held it's annual sport championship game, Alex was to play for the basketball team together with Kyle and the others but right in the middle of the basketball game he received a phone call and he left. Just like that," Miles explained.

"Really?" I asked. I was totally surprised.

"Yeah, and on that day, I vividly remember the principal Mrs. Morgan and her vice principal Mr. Dan were disappeared few minutes before the game which was quite unusual because throughout my years in S.S.H, she must be there but that day she vanished," Miles explained further.

"So you think Mrs. Morgan has something to do with Alex's disappearance?" I asked.

"I strongly do," Miles said.

"I'm, what about the owner of S.S.H? As far as I've been here, I've never set eyes on him...or maybe her," I said.

"Neither have any student in S.SH but I do know he or she has a conference call with the principal now and then to give orders but I've not seen a face yet," Miles explained as we walked on.

"Woah!" was all I could say. I knew it from the start. The school was hiding something.

I felt my feet step on something, something rather soft and fluffy. I crouched down and felt it, felt like a...

An angry growl became audible and a huge monster arose from its resting place.

"Holy barnacles," Miles yelled.

"I think I stepped on its tail," I said.

"You what!" Miles exclaimed.

"Miles," I called, "run."

Together we turned back and ran for the entrance, the monster trailing behind.

"We can't let that thing get out of this place" I said. We were still far from the entrance.

"So what are we going to do?" Miles asked as we kept on running.

"Miles," I called.

"Yeah," was the reply.

"I want you to get out of here right now. Run and don't look back," I said to him.

"What are you saying? We're both going out of here together," Miles said.

I turned around; the beast was still a couple of meters away from us.

"That thing mustn't go out. I need you to get out of here," I said.

"You wanna face that thing alone? No way," Miles said.

I needed to get him out of here. I didn't want anything to happen to him.

"Look Miles, I need you to get out and find the others. I'll be fine, I promise," I said and he was silent for a moment.

"You sure you'll be fine?" He asked.

"I will, go." I urged and he ran on while I came to a halt and turned around. The monster was already close. I reached into my backpack and reached another dagger and held both tightly.

"Here goes nothing," I said.

The beast finally reached up to me and stopped. I thought he had given up and wanted peace but I guess that wasn't it. It gave out a loud deafening roar and attempted to hit me with its paw but luckily, I ducked, swerved to its back and sent the daggers straight to its spine. I pulled the daggers out almost immediately and the monster roared in pain. Blood gushed out the wound but it wasn't through with me yet and neither was I. It turned to me ready to attack.

"Sorry big guy but lives are on the line here. See you in heaven," I said and sent the daggers to its chest, one on the left and the other on the right, aiming at the heart. The heart is normally located at the left side of the chest but hey, its a monster, you never can tell.

I thought that would finish him off but...it didn't. It gripped out the daggers and sent them flying and angrily glared at me.

"Are you indestructible?" I found myself asking it.

It sounded the loudest roar ever and I knew I had to leave. I turned and ran towards the exit, the beast hotly pursuing me. I looked back at it now and then, it was losing a lot of blood but it wasn't relenting and I was already close to the entrance.

"Dear God, work a miracle," I prayed silently within me.
