"Sherby?" I was shocked out of my wits to see that the Captain of the guild party I joined just two days ago was actually the one leading a squad to assassinate me.
Looking to the side, I saw a furious looking Dana, her stare felt like something that could pierce my soul in that moment. She was the one I had attacked a moment ago. If it wasn't for El; that dark mage who almost killed me and caused me to spend two days recuperating, Dana would certainly be dead by now.
"Sorry, Dana. I had no idea you guys were the ones after me. Why would you accept employment from this douche anyway?" I asked as I looked at the burly man off to the side with a face full of ridicule for himself. He had discovered that he employed the wrong people: people who were actually quite familiar with me.
"Seriously, Jace. We just want to make some money. Do we have to keep running into you in the most odd and weird ways?" As Sherby spoke, the rest of the crew nodded their heads in agreement.
"How am I the one being blamed here?" I asked with a face full of surprise, not attempting to hide it in any way. "And since when did you lot start accepting requests from shady people?"
"Well, we certainly didn't know he was a shady adventurer, that's for sure." Perriot said. "He just came to us saying he heard we were a strong bunch, and wanted us to help catch a runaway from his own town. He's not from around here, see. But he is an actual adventurer, though." He added as he scratched his forehead.
"You know what, let's talk about this later. He's getting away." I said. During our talk, the burly man had already began to flee. Clearly, he knew he was no match for the lot of us and he could see we were quite familiar with each other. I had seen him running but paid him no heed. He was way too slow for me to stress myself.
"Hey, triplets. I'll leave this one to you." Sherby said, refering to the three members of our team I hadn't really had any contact with. They said that they were triplets who went by the names of Rue. All of them were called Rue. Quite odd, too. So if you wanted to call on one of them, you'll be calling on all of them all the same. Thus, they did everything together.
Hearing the order from Sherby, they each moved at the same time and at the same speed towards their prey, attempting yo catch up with him.
"Hey, Cap'n?"
"Yeah, Jace?"
"Can I kill him?"
"What?" Sherby revealed a surprise on his face as he heard this. "Ain't you a little too young to start killing people?"
He muttered to himself a little after that. "Sheesh, only the gods know what this world is turning into."
"So... how much was he going to pay you guys?" I asked, attempting to probe just how much I was worth to this large, young man.
"He already paid us. Thirty coppers." Perriot said, as he came from the side, facing the same direction as us: the direction where the chase had just concluded.
"That's a bit small." I said, pouting my lips.
"Don't overestimate yourself, short straw." El walked up to us and said. "I beat you flawless last time, I can do it again continuously for as long as you want. You're clearly not worth much." He added.
I frowned at this. El was always a mood spoiler for me and he was doing it again: spoiling my mood, though with his words this time. Dana walked up to us to watch the chase as well.
"Don't let him get to you. I mean, I still despise you for trying to kill me, with a sneak attack no less and I am thankful to El for saving my life." She turned to El. "Thank you, El."
After saying this she turned back to me and continued what she had been saying earlier. "But, if you let anyone get in your head, El or not, you will certainly regret it."
"Thanks for the advice. And, I am truly sorry for that. Again." I said with an apologetic and awkward smile directed towards Dana.
"Hey, he's got him." Perriot said. "You love birds can flirt later, okay?"
"Hey, Sherby. Can I still kill him?"
"No, kid. You're too small to kill anyone." Sherby said, as he started walking towards the triplets and that burly man.
"Alright, fine. Can I at the very least question him?" I asked, trying to make cute puppy dog eyes so he would let me off this time around.
"Ew, kid. What is that shit? Go on, go see him. Just get that shit look out of my face." Sherby said.
My 'cute' face had not gotten the required reaction, but it, at the very least, got me what I want. So, I didn't really care either way.
I slowly walked up to the spot where the triplets had pinned the big, young man down on the ground, relishing every moment as I envisioned his scared face when I would take his life.
Yes, I wasn't going to interrogate him. There was nothing to interrogate, basically and I had no questions for him whatsoever.
My actual reason for saying I washed to question him was so I could get an attack in there. An attack that would kill him, earning me double experience points, because right now, getting stronger was all I could think about.
In another four days or so, my family members along with me would embark on a journey to the Capital. This journey was where we would encounter that Wyvern. This time around, I wasn't going to let some Wyvern tell me if or if not I could live the rest of my life with my family providing all my needs. This time around, I would kill that Wyvern.
I had gotten to where the young man was by now. He was pinned down to the ground by the slim triplets so he lay bare on his stomach. I squatted to meet him at eye level.
"What is your name?" I asked.
"Ham. Now, let me go! The adventurer's guild will not forgive any who touch their own!"
'Ah, the cries of a trapped rabbit. As refreshing as ever.'
"Ham, know today that you died as part of the greater good. You died to help me get stronger." I said.
