We had embarked on our journey and most things had gone as they did the first time it happened, except now, we were current facing an army of bandits whilst a mighty Wyvern steadily approached our position.
I steered myself and steeled my resolve, clenching my fist as I did so, before finally looking up to meet my father's gaze.
"Father, let me fight with you today. Let us take that Wyvern together." I said.
"Are you crazy? You want to take on a Wyvern? I think you want us to all get killed." He replied hastily, chastising me for my earlier words as though they were taboo.
"What? But you said we.could take on a Wyvern. You said we could defeat a Wyvern." I complained.
"Yes, I did." Father's gaze shifted all around as he examined every place, searching for the best escape alternative. "But with the right assistance, which we currently do not have."
As we kept arguing, Julee and Koval approached us. They were among our escorts: they were after all, our best soldiers.
"Milord, there is a Wyvern approaching. Luckily, it managed to scare away the bandits. Unluckily, there are some wounded among our ranks that need rest. We cannot go up against a Wyvern." Julee reported.
"Even if the lot of you were at your peak, we would still be unable to go toe to toe with a Wyvern." Father replied, rather dejected. "We must focus on getting everyone to safety just in case the Wyvern were to attack, meanwhile making sure not to get it's attention."
"Yes." Julee and Koval immediately moved to begin getting our little party out of the main roads and into the forest. Meanwhile, Father turned to face me.
"You wish to fight a Wyvern, eh?" I nodded at this question. "Then ye wish for death." He replied. "But fret not, if we die, we will die protecting the other lot. Aye?"
"Aye." I nodded. "Not that I am willing to die here... " I muttered silently.
We hid ourselves behind a huge boulder that just, by chance, happened to be a little down the road. I remembered this boulder, so I had led Father and the other soldiers over.
We waited silently for the Wyvern to go past us, even though we knew this was hardly possible. Wyverns mostly came this way when they were hungry, but a person could go their whole lives without ever seeing a Wyvern. They were that rare. Some scriptures would even refer to them as creatures of legend.
Dragons, however, were regarded as myth. No one had seen a dragon in the last thousand or so years. If a dragon did decide to swing by and play a little, it was little wonder how much damage would occur. The Nation's might even have to pool resources together to defeat it.
I shook these thoughts off my head. Right now, I was to battle a Dragon, not a Wyvern. Though not as strong as a Dragon, a Wyvern was still plenty strong. It was basically the next in line after a Dragon.
*Whoosh*
The sound of air rushing and being torn sounded in my ears. This Wyvern was really fast. Even my Agility stats. can't compare to it.
In a blink, the Wyvern was already past us. We turned out heads to see its next course of action. It slowed itself in the air, and dove down with its maws wide open before crashing teeth first into our carriage.
'Those teeth are gigantic. If I were impaled by those, I actually think they could cover the whole of my body.' I thought.
"Father," I started, looking to the side with reference to my father. "I don't think it has good intents. What do we do?"
"Patience. It hasn't spotted us yet, and if it does, we mustn't attack first." He answered, eyes fixated on this gargantuan being called a Wyvern.
Humans! I know you are around here somewhere. Come out, come out. I'm in the moodto play today.
I was shocked as this thought was transferred directly to my mind. It was in a very hoarse yet booking voice. At first, I thought that mysterious person was back, but then I noticed everyone had that look of surprise on their faces. I concluded after that, that it could only be the Wyvern's voice.
"It seems this Wyvern can understand human language, and can even communicate thoughts in kind." Father said as he turned to face everyone, gathering us all around him.
"Now, if this Wyvern attacks, this will be hard. Very hard. We might not even be able to land a single blow, truthfully. After hearing all this, are you lot still willing to risk your life to fight for people who probably won't even remember your names?"
I saw what Father was doing. He was trying to discourage the soldiers so only those who were extremely willing to join this fight would do so. And it was working.
Out of the seven soldiers that were with us, four left, leaving us with only Julee, Koval and another young female soldier.
"Thank you." Father said softly to the three of them. Then, he turned to face me. "Jason, I won't force you to stay, you know that."
I took a look at his face and saw extreme seriousness. I smiled and turned me face away to face the direction the Wyvern was in, where it was currently thrashing and burning everything in sight.
"If I leave you here right now, what would I tell Leanna? Plus, you still have to give the First Princess her birthday present, no? We wouldn't want the family name to fall just because of a simple Wyvern, eh?"
Father just shook his head at my antics and smiled.
"Father, the Wyvern. It has seen us." I said. The Wyvern currently had its bloodthirsty eyes locked onto our position. It was clearly looking intently at our small group waiting to see our next action. For a mighty beast such as itself, it was surely shrewd and cautious.
"Alright, then." Father said. "Let's go battle a Wyvern." He drew his sword and turned to face the Wyvern, the five of us ready and raring to do battle.
A dark red screen popped up in front of my face.
