The plane drew a long cloud in the sky, leaving behind white clouds.
The weather has begun in the summer, also much hotter than usual. The airport is crowded and there are many people passing by. Lucas stood at the gate waiting, his eyes seemed to be searching for something.
Suddenly, among the passing crowd, a cheerful girl ran towards him. Her steps were extremely hurried, even her well-made face was pale because of her actions. Lucas stood there, the corners of his lips curled into a faint smile. His sister hasn't changed at all.
"Lucas!!!"
Natasha lunged forward, wrapping her arms around his waist and squeezing tightly. After six years of not seeing her, she was no longer the school girl he once knew. Natasha has changed a lot, especially… Lucas's face turned red, he pushed Natasha away a little.
"Natt, you're an adult, don't be as carefree as you were when you were little."
"Ah yes, I'm sorry."
Natasha noticed the distance in Lucas's words. She lowered her head, the corners of her lips trying to maintain a mirror smile. Apparently, he had never been so cold to her before. But now, even the way she talked to her was as cold as two strangers. Natasha's heart harbored a painful feeling, but she didn't show it. Lucas didn't like seeing her sullen face, so she couldn't make him feel sad.
"Lucas, who is this girl?"
The newcomer's voice rang out, breaking the silence between the two of them. Natasha looked at the woman standing beside Lucas, uncontrollably shaking slightly. He never said that he would bring a woman home. Moreover, when the woman wrapped her arms around Lucas's arm intimately, Natasha realized that the relationship between the two of them was not normal at all.
"Miri, this is Natasha. She is my adopted sister."
Lucas reached out his hand towards Natasha and slowly introduced it to Miri. Then, his gaze returned to the woman standing next to him, her face very calm.
"Natasha, this is Miri. She is my current girlfriend. I and her, perhaps, will be engaged."
Natasha's face was pale. She was completely unaware of this. Lucas left for six years, with almost no contact with her. And now, when he came back, did he bring a girlfriend? Furthermore, do the two of them intend to get engaged?
Natasha couldn't breathe. Her chest felt like it was being squeezed by someone. A painful feeling in her heart made Natasha not dare to face the cruel truth in front of her. The brother she loves, will be engaged to another girl? Obviously, she had to rejoice, to hold his hand and congratulate them on their happiness. But Natasha couldn't do it. She lowered her head very low, trying to regulate her emotions.
"Is that so? You never told me about this. You're too mean, you didn't tell me anything in advance, so I didn't have time to prepare a present for her."
Natasha raised her head. In her lovely clear eyes, no trace of the previous pain seemed to be visible anymore. But, no matter how hard she tried to hide it, it was still possible to hide from Lucas. He furrowed his brows, wanting to take another step forward and hug her like they did when they were kids. Unfortunately, he didn't do that. He and Natasha can't be together, so it's best not to give her any hope.
"We just want to go home. Mom and Dad are waiting for you two."
Lucas watched the back of Natasha walking in front of him, his heart ached with pain. After six years without seeing him, his little sister has changed a lot. It seems that the relationship between the two of them is no longer the same as before, becoming much more distant. And he was no longer the only one in Natasha's eyes. This was clearly what he wanted, but for some reason, Lucas felt his heart clench as if someone had squeezed it and cut holes with a knife.
The house remained unchanged from before he left. The same spacious yard where he and Natasha used to plant trees, the same whitewashed fence where he and she used to scribble. That's right, this is where he used to grow up, where he had many fond memories with Natasha.
Lucas pushed open the door, everything was the same as before. Adoptive parents are sitting on the sofa. As soon as they heard the door open, the two quickly got up and went to greet him. Mr. Hence patted Lucas on the shoulder, but his gaze was not on his adopted son who had been away for a long time, but on Miri who was standing behind Lucas.
"Father, mother, this is Miri. She is my girlfriend."
Perhaps, Lucas also understood the meaning of Mr. Hence. He put his hand on Miri's waist and slowly introduced her to her adoptive parents. Miri also gently bowed her head. These are her boyfriend's parents, she can't leave a wrong impression on them.
"This girl is adorable. You two go home quickly, your mother has prepared a lot of food."
Mr. Hence patted Lucas on the shoulder, then leaned over to let the two of them into the house. Miri looked at Mrs. Hence's expression. For some reason, Miri seemed to see the worry on Mrs. Hence. And her gaze was directed towards…Natasha. That didn't seem to be the usual worried look.
Natasha stood at the stairs, she just looked at Lucas and Miri for a moment before leaving. Lucas looked at his adopted sister who had disappeared down the long corridor, suppressing a sigh.
"Father, let me go up to my room and talk to Natasha for a while."
Perhaps, Mr. Hence also saw the strangeness of his daughter. He sighed, nodding in agreement with Lucas's suggestion.
Natasha's room was still the same, the room next to his. Lucas stood in front of her room door, knocking a few times.
"Natt, can I come in?"
"Wait a minute, I'm changing."
Lucas didn't urge her either. He leaned back against the wall, waiting patiently. After five minutes, the door to her room opened. Lucas entered the room. Natasha was sitting in front of the dressing table, slowly applying lipstick. Looks like she's getting ready to go out.
"Don't you have dinner with everyone?"
"I have an appointment with Will today. He and I are going to have dinner later, so I don't have dinner with everyone."
