Chapter 8 - Terrifying night

Anna's entire body was drenched in cold sweat as her chest heaved up and down, breathing heavily.

She heard the rustle of something and when she looked at the direction it was coming from, she saw the mouse. She had forgotten to feed the mouse before going to bed.

She quickly got up from bed and wore a jacket. Putting the mouse into her front pocket, Anna left the room.

.....

After feeding the mouse, she walked out of the kitchen. As she continued to walk through the corridor to her room, she stumbled on her footsteps and fell onto the ground. She let out a sigh of relief that she didn't hurt herself until she noticed that the mouse was not in her pocket.

Looking around, she caught sight of the mouse as it ran through the corridor before slipping into a room through the window. Anna got frightened, thinking that she would never get to see the mouse again. Was she supposed to go into the room to search for it? What if the room belongs to Madam Charlotte or Marcos?

At this, she was scared but to think that she would lose her mouse forever, she decided to go into the room. She would ask for permission from the owner to search for her mouse.

Getting up on her feet, Anna headed to the room only to pause when she heard a small cry.

"Anna." The voice called out.

Anna looked at the direction the voice was coming from. It was coming from the darkest side of the Mansion. There was no lantern to light up the entrance of the room.

"Anna I know you can hear me." She recognized the voice to be Elizabeth. What was she doing awake at this time of the night?

Slowly, she followed the voice and came to stand in front of a wooden door.

"Elizabeth.....?"

"P.... Please open up." She cried out.

"I can't open the door from here. It was locked from the outside." She continued.

Anna was confused. Why would they lock the door from the outside? She was not a child for them to lock the door at night and even if she was a child, it was not right to do so.

Anna thought of opening the door but then again she didn't know why her mother might have locked the door so she decided to ask from her mother first.

"I should call your mother." Anna said.

"N..... No..... No." Elizabeth croaked out. "Don't call anyone. Just please open up."

"But you don't sound good. Is everything alright there? Why are you crying?" Anna asked.

"I will explain everything when I'm out. Just open the door. The key is right there." Elizabeth said in a hurry.

The girl might be in pains, Anna thought.

Slowly, she raised her hand to the knob.

"Please open up." Elizabeth cried out.

"Hold on." Anna told her as she tried to unlock the door.

"We don't have time. Come on." The voice was loud and deep, unlike her normal angelica voice. This made Anna a little bit worried. We?

Why was she sounding strange?

"Elizabeth....?"

"Open up..... Please." The girl pleaded.

Her cries only made Anna nervous more. As she unlocked the door, she slowly opened it only to see Elizabeth push one of her hand through the small space.

The shock of what happened made her fell on her knees. As she was about to get up back, someone pushed her to the side. When Anna looked up to see who it was, her eyes widened upon seeing Marcos.

With inhuman speed, he locked the door and breathed out in relief.

Turning to Anna, he asked. "What are you doing here?"

Anna didn't know how to react with what just happened. She had just watched a terrifying scene of Elizabeth speaking in a deep voice and trying to attack her. She saw traces of scratches on the door and Anna eyes widened with surprise.

Upon seeing the position she was in, she quickly stood up and bowed her head at the Young Master of the house. He stared at her with narrowed eyes as if he could see right into her soul.

Marcos hadn't expected to see someone lurking around this side of the Mansion at this hour of the night. He had gave a stern warning to all the maids not to walk into this side of the castle at midnight no matter the circumstances. At some occasion there might be cry, screams and threatens but he gave them a clear warning not to come near this side nor open the door and before morning he would compel them not to know anything that happened the night before.

This was the reason, he had his room moved near hers. So he could pay attention to her at night. But seeing that this stubborn maid did not obey clear instructions, his eyes narrowed with anger.

He moved closer to her and when her scent drifted into her nose, he knew immediately who it was. What was she doing here?

"I'm sorry i was coming from the kitchen when my mouse pet slipped into the other room. I was about to go into the room when I heard her cries." She explained.

"I think she is not alright, Young Master Marcos." She bowed her head respectfully.

His brow furrowed at her words. "And who told you she's not alright?"

"I heard her cries. She was—"

"Wait....." I moved closer, and in a low voice I spoke to her. "Did you say you heard her cries?"

Anna nodded her head. "Yes. She doesn't sound good."

He moved more closer until they were inches apart. "This never happened."

Anna watched him with confusion.

"You will forget what you saw tonight. It never happened and you didn't hear anything." He said.

After what felt like an eternity but was just a few minutes, she opened her mouth to speak. "My mouse? I can't find it."

"Here it is." He handed the mouse to her and she quickly walked away.

As Anna walked down the corridor, she squeezed her eyes shut before opening them as memories of what happened earlier flooded in.

Why was the Young Master telling her to forget what happened?
