Chapter 17 - Shawn's Power

Kayden's roommates were two boys named Paul and Shawn. While Paul had challenged Kayden to a fight less than two weeks from today, Shawn was more interested in others things besides fighting. Athough his strength wasn't something to laugh at, his wristwatch displayed the number 24.2, meaning that he was above even Kayden in rank.

Still, despite this, fighting and growing stronger wasn't something he enjoyed doing. It was just a necessity to ensure that he could live his life doing what he truely enjoyed. Shawn was someone who loved to dabble in science. During his free time, he would spend his time creating all sorts of gadgets while further expanding his knowledge on the world around him.

One would begin to think how he could do such a thing, considering the fact that his room was big, but not big enough to contain something akin to a laboratory where he could invest his free time in chasing his passion. Of course, he was able to do just that thanks to the Shales, well, their magic, to be more precise.

You see, ever since the first attack from the alien race, humanity had done its best to salvage whatever bit of technology from them. In the midst of destroyed cities and countries, they were able to obtain remains of their technology. Scientists had done the best they could to figure out a weakness to Thur strength, however, all their efforts were futile in the end.

And although the people with abilities car forth to help fight in the war, there was nothing to that could be done in terms of learning more about their enemy. However, that all changed the day that they got their hands on the body of a Shale.

After years of intensive research, they managed to find a way to combine the stolen technology, with the power of the Shale, creating something truely remarkable. From the works of some of the greatest scientist of mankind, came what is now known today as the magic circle. Magic was the tool the Shales use in the war against man.

It is what gives them the edge in warfare, and had allowed them to kills billions across the globe. With this new discovery, they had found a way to allow man access to the powers of magic. Till this day, more research is being conducted regarding the Shales and the magic circle. Still, one new discovery is something that the humans knew they would use to the fullest.

Magic circles are circles which are filled with ancient markings and symbols. Powered by the blood of a Shale, they have the power to transport anything to anywhere, not only on Earth, but beyond. It was what allowed humanity to discover other solar systems other than the one where Earth belonged. And in those solar systems, there existed beasts, creatures unlike what anyone had ever seen.

Although it was difficult at first, man was able to slay a beast for the first time, and from its remains, came a glowing crystal. This was the beginning of how abilities began to spread in the world. A magic circle can transport anyone to anywhere he desires, although there are limitations that come along with its capabilities.

Still, that was something Shawn didn't have to worry about, as he stood in the centre of a magic circle he had drawn with a strange device. As the evolution of magic circles continued, a way was discovered to allow more people to have access to them, thus creating smaller, less powerful magic circles.

The magic circles students at the academy could draw was not able to transport anyone in or out of the academy. Meaning that where he was heading to had to be somewhere on the academy's premises.

As the circle began to glow, each smaller circle within a larger circle began to rotate in the opposite direction to the one next to in. In a magic circle, there were actually five circles in total, with each one having its own unique drawings. Shawn waited until the light had fully consume him. Once the light had dissipated, he was no longer I'm his dorm room.

Somewhere underneath the academy, Shawn found himself covered from all sides with dirt. Activating his ability, the dirt and sand began to move away from him. Pushing it away, he formed a floor and the walls, as well as a ceiling.

"I knew I should've done this since the first day, but I guess I was still upset after that thing happened and couldn't focus on the more important stuff," he said to himself.

Now that a large enough space he been created, Shawn snapped his fingers, and the floor made of sand was covered by a layer of reinforced Galamite. The walls, as well, were covered by this strong substance, including the roof as well. Everything was slowly turning out the way he expected. He created a passage way leading to the surface where air can enter and leave the room. Then, he transported all sorts of gadgets and devices into the room.

"This will be my new lab while I'm here," Shawn thought, heading over to check on his latest experiment.

In a large glass container, a figure could be seen tied up and sedated. Shawn gave this creatures a stern look before turning his attention on to the monitors.

"Sigh... he still knocked out cold," he breathed a sigh of relief. He then turned his attention towards a vile containing a blue glowing liquid.

"Things are really getting out of hand a lot quicker than I expected. I was hoping that I would only have to use it during the class expeditions, but I make have to take it even before the interclass matches," he said.

He was well aware of the recent clashes between Kayden, Josh, and Zander. Plus, the gang of students who had beaten up two of Kayden's friends and left them half-dead in the Arena. Being the one known as Titan two, he was aware of more things than others.

Although being one of the top three, he knew that he wouldn't remain in his position for long if he didn't do whatever it took to grow stronger. His ability wasn't one that focused directly in combat in the first place. It was a Tracker Class ability that granted him the power of teleportation. With it, he transformed an area underneath the academy into one of his labs.

For the meantime, he would spend his free time here doing more research while dabbling in all sorts of inventions to pass the time. And if one of the student groups decide to challenge him, he was sure enough that he was ready for whatever sort of they would put up against him.

_____________

While Shawn was underground, Paul was in the academy building on his way outside to purchase some snacks from the canteen. You see, since the academy wouldn't allow students to leave, they considered opening a canteen in the school area. Paul just wanted to have some chips before calling it a night.

The man working at the canteen seemed quite friendly as he gave Paul what his wanted in exchange for the agreed price. Although it was quite dangerous to be walking around the academy at night alone, Paul was confident that he could handle whomever it may be that chooses to take advantage of the dark corners around the academy area. He didn't become Titan three because he was weak.

On his way back to the building, it seemed like no one was going to make a move on him.

"Hah! They must be scared. They should be! Who has the guts to challenge the third strongest student at the academy?!" he yelled, loud enough for even the shop owner, who was almost a mile away, to hear him. While the academy itself was large, the area around it was large as well.

Surrounded by stretches of vegetation closer to the walls than anything else in the compound. The academy's shop was located a little away from the academy, and the forests as well. Paul was on his way back when he felt something scratch his arms. The cuts may not have been deep, they were powerful enough to draw out blood.

"So I was right to suspect that I would be attacked," he said. He couldn't see his opponent, thanks to the dark areas where the lights couldn't reach, he still had his ways of flushing out a coward. With his ability, which allows him to see heat signatures, his enemies have nowhere to hide.

Paul's strength and speed were enough to locate each and everyone of them, and with his ability, he could tell who and where an attack was coming from, allowing him to dodge in time while also finishing off the students trying to take his rank.

Looking at their wristwatches, Paul wondered whether or not these students were crazy, or just plain desperate for a higher rank that they chose to court death tonight. Seeing as the threat was dealt with, he continued walking and headed back into the academy.
