Chapter 1 - Missed Pickup

Under the scorching heat of the summer, the highway leading to the airport was heavily congested.

Emily Williams sat in the car provided by the hotel she worked for. Glancing at her watch, her beautiful eyebrows furrowed involuntarily.

She had to arrive at the airport before 8 o'clock to pick up the executive CEO who was specially assigned to her by her superiors. He had a prominent background, rumored to be highly respected by the headquarters of the hotel group. Presumably, he possessed remarkable abilities and a tactful approach to his work.

In order to receive him at the airport, Emily Williams had seen a photo of him. His appearance was handsome and refined, but she had no idea about his personality or temperament.

Emily Williams was dressed in a light blue pinstripe shirt on top, and a black knee-length skirt paired with black high heels. Her hair was pulled back, giving her a mature and capable look.

Although her attire was not much different from the average office worker, upon closer inspection, her delicate facial features, fair complexion, and natural elegance set her apart from the ordinary working-class women.

What made people even more envious was her hot figure, which couldn't be concealed despite her understated style. However, in Emily Williams' eyes, these standard measurements had caused her quite a bit of trouble.

During her student days, the title of the "campus beauty" was always accompanied by the nickname of "vase girl," as many boys pursued her and others would say she was fickle.

And her outstanding performance in academics and work, people would say it was all because of her appearance. She cared about these things a lot, but no one knew the effort she put in behind the scenes. As a finance major, she was used to dealing with numbers and had long learned to ignore negative comments and avoid unnecessary interactions with such people.

Emily Williams couldn't understand why the chairman suddenly assigned her as the executive CEO's special assistant. There were so many talented and beautiful women at the hotel, far more socially skilled than her, who only knew how to deal with numbers after leaving the finance department.

She had no idea how to entertain the executive CEO who had been transferred from overseas. However, she was always open-minded, believing that as long as she treated him with respect, he would not mistreat her.

The cars ahead were not moving an inch, forming a long line. Emily Williams looked in the rearview mirror and knew that the situation behind her wouldn't be much better. Many people were impatiently honking their horns.

Caught between a rock and a hard place, tears welled up in Emily Williams' eyes. She had woken up early enough and even took a shortcut, hoping to arrive at the airport before the flight landed. Little did she know that the more she worried, the more likely it was to happen — she was now stuck on the highway.

Emily Williams opened the car door and got out, taking a few steps forward to see what was happening up ahead. Several drivers, anxious just like her, were standing outside their vehicles, shouting about being pressed for time and being on the verge of being late.

A traffic policeman approached to maintain order. As he walked past Emily Williams, he paused and glanced at her curvaceous figure. "There has been a major traffic accident ahead. Please wait for a moment."

"Can we please hurry? I'm really pressed for time," Emily Williams anxiously twisted her fingers. With an important task entrusted to her, she didn't want her schedule to be delayed.

The traffic policeman glanced at her. "We prioritize the rescue of the injured. The accident vehicles will be towed away in half an hour, so I'm sorry, but it will take at least that long."

"Half an hour?" Emily Williams's sweet voice slightly increased. She bit her rosy lips and stared at the traffic policeman for a while, causing him to appear somewhat shy, thinking that the beautiful woman in front of him was interested in him. She turned back and got into her car, dialing a number.

"Chairman, I'm sorry, I'm on my way to pick up Alex, but there's a traffic jam due to an accident ahead. I'm afraid I won't be able to reach him..." Emily Williams spoke on the phone, looking helpless.

"I've already told Alex earlier that you would pick him up. Well, let me call him later and send someone else to pick him up if he arrives and his phone is still off. It would be troublesome if that happens," the chairman's tone sounded displeased.

"Chairman, I'm sorry for the trouble. I'm already trying my best to get to the airport, but I didn't expect..."

"Forget it, forget it. You couldn't have foreseen this sudden situation. Let's leave it at that," the chairman hung up the phone.

Emily Williams put her phone away and looked at the line of cars ahead, feeling guilty for not fulfilling the task assigned by her superiors.

Since she had just been promoted to the Finance Manager of the hotel not long ago, taking over a mess, she had been working overtime to investigate all the accounts, but still couldn't figure out where the missing account had gone. The headquarters in the United States found out about it and assigned Alex Hamilton to return to the country to uncover the mastermind behind it.

Emily Williams knew how much the hotel management valued Alex Hamilton. Those with good ethics wanted him to find the culprit and prove their innocence, while those with unethical methods trembled in fear, fearing that their fraudulent accounts would be discovered and they would be kicked out of the hotel.

As for the mastermind behind the financial loophole, at this moment, they were probably trying to find ways to hide the evidence and preserve their own positions. After all, not everyone could enter this international chain hotel where Emily Williams worked.

She stood out from so many competitors, rising from a ordinary accountant to the Finance Manager. It was truly not easy. She didn't want to leave a bad impression on her superiors just because she couldn't complete this task, but she had indeed disappointed them.

Just as Emily Williams was at a loss gripping the steering wheel, the plane had already arrived at the airport.

Amidst the bustling crowd, Alex Hamilton, who was 180 centimeters tall, confidently walked through the crowd, dressed in well-fitted attire and pulling a suitcase. His presence caught the attention of those around him, who either admired him or looked astonished. However, he paid little attention to these admiring or surprised glances, almost as if he were indifferent.

Coming from a privileged background and being young and ambitious, Alex Hamilton held an arrogant heart, feeling superior to others. Due to his persistence and hard work in the workplace, he had gained a reputation for being cold-hearted and resolute.

Alex Hamilton's luggage was simple. He had been instructed by the headquarters to handle a minor issue at a branch hotel. This kind of situation was quite common, and it rarely escaped his notice. Once he resolved the matter, he would return to the headquarters in the United States to continue his career.

Knowing that someone from the hotel branch was supposed to pick him up, he continued walking towards the immigration hall without paying much attention. He cast a glance at the crowd in the immigration hall, feeling disappointed as he didn't see anyone coming to meet him. Without reaching for his phone to inquire about the situation, he grimly hailed a taxi and made his way to the hotel.

It was only when the Chairman personally arrived at the lobby on the first floor to welcome Alex Hamilton that his expression slightly softened. As the Chairman explained that the person who was supposed to pick him up got stuck in traffic, he let out a cold snort, considering the situation understood.

The Chairman, with his mature and experienced outlook, could sense Alex Hamilton's mood but dismissed it as youthful arrogance. Moreover, he was known for his ability to judge people. This time, he had chosen Emily Williams as Alex Hamilton's special assistant—an individual with a good temperament, patience, diligence, and a low-profile personality. He believed that Emily Williams would certainly be of great help to the company.

Unaware of who the company had originally arranged to pick him up, Alex Hamilton would not approve of someone who took on a task without proper preparations and ultimately messed it up.

Meanwhile, Emily Williams finally spotted the car in front slowly moving forward, but half an hour had already passed since the scheduled pick-up time.

By the time Emily Williams rushed back to the hotel, over another half an hour had elapsed, causing her to miss the reception for Alex Hamilton.

Wearing high heels, she entered the Chairman's office panting for breath. "Chairman, I... I'm back," Emily Williams said, wiping the sweat off her forehead.

Alex Hamilton glanced at her, and his sharp eyes immediately focused on the Chairman. If she was the one who was supposed to be his special assistant and arrived late, wasn't the Chairman using her attractive figure and stunning face to lure him in?

Unfortunately, her plain appearance concealed her beauty, and she lacked anything that would captivate him.

But the Chairman had a different perspective on it. Perhaps he thought that by sending him a beauty, it would distract him from his work and prevent him from competing for his position. Then, under the pretext of being unprofessional, he would dismiss him early. However, overseas, his reputation for avoiding relationships with women was well-known.

When the Chairman saw Emily Williams rushing back, he smiled and stood up, introducing her to Alex Hamilton. "Alex, let me introduce you. This is Emily Williams, the manager of our finance department. She is very meticulous in her work. During your time here in the country, she will be your special assistant. If you need anything, just ask her to take care of it. She was the one who went to the airport to pick you up, but there was a little incident along the way. I apologize on her behalf."

Alex Hamilton glanced at Emily Williams. She had a fair complexion, bright and attractive eyes, and enticing pink lips. With her perfect figure, she was indeed a beauty. However, besides her looks, he couldn't see how competent she was at her job.

But Emily Williams was recommended by the Chairman, so regardless of Alex Hamilton's personal preferences, he had to give her some face. He smiled lightly and said, "Chairman, you must be joking. In the future, I will have to rely on Emily's guidance." He reached out his hand towards Emily Williams.

"Hello, Alex. I hope we can have a pleasant cooperation," Emily Williams smiled gently and revealed a row of neat white teeth, appearing quite lovely. She politely shook his hand, but he applied a strong grip to her palm, causing her smile to instantly fade away, and she stared at him with painful widened eyes.

Alex Hamilton gave a slight smile, but it failed to convey any goodwill. He quickly released her hand.

"Alex, I'm really sorry about earlier. I tried my best to get to the airport, but I didn't expect the outcome to be like this," Emily Williams hurriedly apologized after Alex Hamilton made a show of his dominance.

Alex Hamilton ignored her. He always detested people who lacked a sense of time, and it was precisely because of this that he remembered Emily Williams' face fiercely.
