Chapter 5 - Thanatos' Grandfather's Challenge and his first job

The energy gathered around Thanatos. It looked like a fluid, liquid, following the tip of his sword.

Thanatos ran towards his grandfather and slashed from the top left to the right down. But the danger was not his sword, but the energy. The green-black energy was like a sword cutting through the air. He hit his grandpa directly, but he did not budge. There was no trace that he even landed the attack.

Thanatos jumped back and tried something different, and now the energy became some kind of gas. The gas spread around the whole fighting space and floated in the air like mist.

Thanatos opened one of his hands, and when he closed it to a fist, green-black spikes came out of his grandfather's body, piercing him from the inside.

"What was that?" The audience looked with wide-open eyes at the fighting scene. For them, it was impossible that the mighty Thanatos could get hurt by an attack.

"Hahahaha! That is pretty interesting," the old man laughed aloud while his body was stabbed from the inside.

"Yes. I can let this liquid be solid liquid and gaseous. Which means that not even breathing is allowed while fighting me," Thanatos declared with a huge grin on his face.

"But I think that is not enough." He shook his hands and walked away.

"Wait, youngling," the old man Thanatos screamed after his grandson.

"You performed well. Take this as a present. Malice." The old man shot a huge black ball towards his grandson that hit him hard.

Thanatos flew through the whole colosseum and crashed against a wall. He felt like his bones cracked one after another.

"Ahaha! This fucking old geezer," Thanatos laughed even though his bones were broken, and he spilled blood while laughing.

"This whole family is crazy, right? One laughs after being pierced, and the other one does the same after several bones broke in his entire body," a man in the audience said while pressing his hand against his forehead.

"Yeah, but he is cute. Isn't he? And strong and tall on top of that," a young female grim reaper said in the audience.

Camilla was angry when she heard that and wanted to scream, but she knew that she had to calm herself down.

"Come on, Camilla, let's go and pick him up before he dies." Morgana liked what she saw. It was clear that she looked forward to working with him together. She wanted to know his other capabilities.

Three hours later.

"I really hate this old man." Thanatos was lying in his bed covered in bandages. Luckily, he was a grim reaper. Grim reapers have bodies that heal themselves over time, as long as the head does not get destroyed or his soul. There are chances that he will survive.

"Please calm down and focus on recovering yourself. I also had no idea that he thought about fighting you himself. But your grandfather really cares about you, believe me." His mother was sitting beside his bed.

"Do you think I do not know? My grandfather would never fight someone he did not recognize as his opponent. There he is the same as I am. If it is not work, he only fights someone he thinks is worthy, and I am clearly not worth fighting him. I am way too weak for that." Thanatos loved fighting just the way his grandfather did. But reality was hard; he was still weak in his eyes. Why? Because he was always treated like a genius. In his whole life, he only fought against people who were stronger than himself or at an already strong stage, and whenever he faced weak opponents, his mood hit rock bottom, and he wasted no time longer with them.

"Well, if you are weak, you can just get stronger, and one day, boom, you will be the one who breaks your grandfather's bones," Morgana said while she leaned against the door frame. She only joined them right now and heard his words. She found it lucky that he considered himself weak; after all, he made the young reapers envy his powers, and the young female reapers fall for him today. It was not even three hours, but he was the number one topic of conversation already on the streets, especially with the ladies. After all, he was tall, strong, and handsome. It often didn't take more than that for a young female grim reaper to take an interest in someone.

"You are right, and do you think that we will get along well with each other?" Thanatos said while looking into his partner's eyes.

Morgana nodded and waved her hand as a gesture to follow her.

"If you are ready, come, we have to go to work." Morgana grinned and left the room.

"Did I miss something? I thought that I would start from tomorrow onwards?" Thanatos looked with a puzzled expression towards his mother.

"Yes, the chief called us; there is something going on in the human world. Souls disappear, and we do not know why. All the other forces who are responsible for the field service are chasing dreadharvesters, and now there are no more people to take care of the problem. You know why we only have so few members." Helene's voice darkened, and her facial expression was filled with anger.

Thanatos didn't have to answer; he knew all too well why they had so few members.

Helene suggested that Thanatos rest, but he didn't want to hear about it and got up again as quickly as possible. He took his boned suit and disappeared.

"Are you ready?" Morgana was waiting for her colleague leaning against a tree.

The two didn't waste any time and headed towards the main headquarters, the building where Thanatos had spoken to the chief earlier.

They now waited in a little room to receive information about their job. After about 5 minutes of waiting, a man entered the room; he had blond hair and a big mustache on his face. He wore a gray uniform with white trimmings and was 185 cm tall.

"In the human world, a few souls disappeared. We do not know who did it, but it is sure that it was not a dreadharvester." The man said in a short and easy-to-understand tone.

"Are there chances that it is a demon? Dreadharvesters are not the only beings who eat souls; they are just the cruelest of the beings who eat or do something else with them." Thanatos thought about it. Of course, there were many creatures who needed souls or were interested in them, but usually, if it was not a dreadharvester who ate the soul, it was a demon.

"We also thought about that, but that couldn't be it. It is something different, but we do not have the time to investigate further into it. So, you two must investigate this and find out who that someone is. Act according to your judgment if that being deserves death or not. Understood?" The man spoke the last word withA special force.

"Yes, commander!" Thanatos and Morgana said at the same time.
