Chereads / The Touch of Hades / Chapter 12 - Rescue

Chapter 12 - Rescue

The person from behind stepped closer, making me to see his face, and to say the least I was disappointed. By the way, he sounded… I had somewhat higher expectations. I wasn't a fantasy fanatic but from the way he carried himself and spoke with such authority, I was expecting a tall man with bulky arms and a glare that could kill anyone in his way. But her savior didn't match her expectations at all.

He looked old and had a white garment on, white. And unless he was an angel, it was quite unethical to be moving around in a white garment, especially on a farm. And he had glasses on and he seemed scrawny, and from how I see it, I was at least an inch taller than him.

I rolled my eyes when I realized this was another version of my neighbor from earlier. And now I have to save myself and my wannabe rescuer from this mess.

"It feeds on fear, don't let him know you are afraid." The old man muttered to me.

'Even if I am?' I wanted to ask but I didn't say. And just listened. I slowly start to let go of the fear of the unknown in my heart, the fear of losing someone dear to me. The fear of never be able to hold, touch, feel again with my bare hands. A tear slid down my eyes and determination started crawl it's way into my heart. I held my shoulders up high and I looked the beast in the eye. And for a moment, I saw a look of disappointment in the creature's eyes. The creature turned to the old man who wore a grin and screeched in anger. I suppose he was angry he lost his dinner. The creature started to turn to find it's way to wherever it came from but, the old man's voice stopped him.

"You're not about to leave to look for another person to feed on are you?" He questioned. But the creature only screeched in response. The old man started to mutter something under his breath, something I could not comprehend. The creature who was suddenly aware of what the old man was up to started to run but the old man was faster.

"Be gone!" he casted and it disappeared leaving behind a green colored mist and a stench of burnt rubber. I crinkled my nose in disgust and slowly started to step a way from the old man. He turned to me and smiled brightly.

"Hi, what are you doing here?" He asked

"Uhm.." I forced out a smile, still walking backwards slowly and said "I've got to go."

I mean, if he could make some creatures disappear into thin air? Who was I?

I heard the old man click his tongue as he followed from behind, but not menacingly like the creature did earlier.

"May I know why you were on this path of the road?"

"Looking for someone." I replied, glancing his way and sending another fake smile before resuming my walk, I kept the distance on purpose.

"Who?" He raised another question still following me.

"I heard a physician lives close to here."

"Do you need one to help your friend?" he asked, his voice sounding mischievous. I stopped walking abruptly upon hearing that.

'How did he find out about that? I wondered.

I turned to look at the man but he wasn't there, he'd disappeared. I furrowed my brows in confusion. I could swear that he spoke to me a second ago and he was right behind me.

"Looking for someone?" The familiar voice from behind came again and I jumped in fright.

"I better get home, since I have someone who's on their way to see me." and with a blink of an eye, he was no longer in sight.

I tried to wrap my head around what just happened. When I realized what he meant, I started to sprint. He was the one I was looking for to help save Madison.

I finally see a house up ahead so, I put in more energy into the race. I got to the doorstep sweating profusely, I had left my water bottle when I fell to the ground earlier I forgot to retrieve it. I move to the door and knock on it three times. The door opened and the old man from earlier came into view. He had a robe on and a towel he was used to dry his gray hair down.

"How did you get here so quickly?"

"Why did you take so long?" He answered my question with one of his own. He stepped to the side letting me come in and I hesitated.

"To answer your question, and I mean the one you are asking yourself. Yes, I am like you with inhuman abilities."

I opened my mouth momentarily in shock not sure of what to say.

"And to your new question; 'How do I know you have powers' it's because that creature was drawn to you and you could see it."

"What do you mean because I could see it, I mean.."

"Mundanes can't… Including your human friend. Now if you'll excuse me."

The old man grabbed a coat and remove the robe he wore and started heading out.

"Wait.." I called after him to the doorstep. "I need you to help my friend… Please" I quickly added.

"Thats what I'm going to do," He simply says before continue his walk. I held him by his elbow making him stop again.

"Let me come with you to show you the spot. If you go alone she won't come with you."

The old man brought out his phone and suddenly took a picture of me.

"There, good thing we have these.. What do they call it? Ah technology! It's good humans are becoming more useful"

"You speak like you are not human." The words came out before I could stop myself.

He slowly turns to look at me and I felt a strange aura as he does so, his eyes that were like orbs had changed from it's pale blue to Red.

"Do you want to see who I truly am, child?"
