Chapter 35 - Shape shifter

Holden

I remained transfixed where I was, still not able to analyse anything that had happened. My arm out, and sword ready to strike the enemy.

The hairs on my neck and arms stood, as I realized I had just been separated from Mystic and Jax. I needed to find a way to get back to them both quickly and fast.

As though things weren't bad enough, my head began to spin. I cursed under my breath, realizing it was an adverse effect of having little sleep.

Trying to maintain my balance, I blink back the haziness from my eyes. Just then I heard the sounds of clicking. Something was coming, I realized as I took two steps back.

Not long after, a fairly big shadow began to emerge from the fog.

"Who's there?" I yell, pointing my sword in its direction. There's no reply, rather it comes closer.

I gritt my teeth, feeling my vision faze but try my best to clear my head. My visions becomes worse, and I stagger back with a grunt.

What was wrong with me? This isn't the adverse effect of lack of sleep, its got to be the doing of this wretched monster.

I grunt, panting, as I stab my sword in the ground to support my weight. I look up to see the most disfigured thing approach me.

Slowly, it begins to morph and change its physique. I blinked, "shape shifter" I whisper. Suddenly, before I could take note of anything else, a strong pressure begins to press down on me.

At first it surpasses my strength as it had taken me by surprise, but few seconds later I overcome it.

With anger blazing through my eyes, I look up ready to burn down anything before me, only to stop, my anger vanishing into thin air.

Standing before me was Mystic, and she had a smile on her face. Without realizing it, a smile appears on mine too. "Mystic, where were you? I was so worried." I say, relief washing over me.

"I'm sorry." She apologises with another smile, before opening her arms for me. "Lets go home now." She said, her voice calm and inviting. I began to walk towards her, before something hits me.

Home....

I narrow my eyes at her, my feet rooted few steps away from her. Her demeanor was too calm, and she wanted to go... home?

Something wasn't right.

"Get away from her!!!" A familiar voice yells from behind me. Immediately, Mystic's eyes which had looked so calm, were now filled with anger and annoyance. Her outstretched hands began to shift to brownish long skinny hands with claws.

"Shit!" I curse, jumping back with my sword stretched to deflect the swipe of her claws.

I wasn't fast enough, I realized as I felt blood oozing out of the side of my neck once I had landed a fair distance away from the raging beast.

That was never Mystic, it was a demon in disguise. What would have happened if I had..

I groan in pain as the cut stings, just then, I begin to hear rushing steps towards me. "Are you okay?" I hear her ask, I look up to meet Mystic's ice blue eyes. They were filled with worry for me, and for some reason it made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

I nod slowly, careful of the wound. "It's just a little scratch, thankfully it didn't break a major blood vessel." I rasp, applying pressure to the bleeding area.

She stared at me for a while, regardless of the angry roars of the raging beast ahead, "how did you know it wasn't me?" It was a whisper, like as though she was scared the beast would hear, I blink, taken aback by her question before I finally reply.

"I can recognise you from afar, because somehow; I've become tangled with you without even realizing it." I say, a hand reaching to coup her cheek, as I stare into her startled eyes. Something shifts in them, but I can't place it. She leans into my touch slightly, before her eyes widen.

I was falling, I was loosing consciousness now.

Shit, the claws of that beast must have been extremely poisonous. "Holden! Stay with me, Holden!" I smile faintly, before being swallowed by darkness, while I was being enveloped in her embrace.

"I'll kill you." I hear her say, before drowning deeper into the darkness.
