Chapter 38 - We've been tricked

Mystic

A day back...

I don't know how long it's been since both I and Holden had began to search for Jax.

"Jax!" I hear Holden yell from behind me for the fourteenth time; probably.

"Where the hell did that floating tiger go?" He asked, annoyance in his voice. But I still didn't miss the hint of concern in it as well.

I drop to my knees, panting a bit. I've been searching for Jax without any rest.

I'd already drained a lot of energy from the previous fights I'd gotten involved in.

I gritt my teeth, placing a hand against my chest as I coughed strongly.

Seconds later, I feel a gentle warmth on my shoulder.

"Take it easy, breathe..." Holden gently whispered into my ears, rubbing my shoulder gently.

I gasped for air, as I did my best to stabilise my breathing.

Half way through, we both feel a strong wave of magic.

I don't move, mostly because I don't have the strength to.

Holden doesn't leave my side either, he remains rooted as we both feel the strong energy intensify.

Finally I couldn't take it anymore, and try to get to my feet.

I stumble and fall back, but not to the ground, rather I end up falling into Holden's embrace.

I feel his warm hands wrap around me, just as the sound of my metal sword collides with the ground.

My visions faze, but my ears were still working perfectly.

"You should leave." I say with a hoarse voice, shutting my eyes tight to stop the spinning.

He remained silent for a while, his grip tightening around me as the strength of the energy intensified.

"You should know better. I'm not going to make the same mistake of leaving you all by yourself again." He said with conviction.

And then it struck me, he was referring to the time the demons had attacked me at school.

A small smile made its way to my lips before I could realize it.

"It wasn't your fault, it was all to sudden." I said, my head feeling more heavier than earlier.

Without opening my eyes to look up at him, I could tell that he was trying his best not to smash something against a tree or something. But he restrained himself.

"Don't try to comfort me." He retorted, through gritted teeth.

I huff, "if you say so, Holden." I say. My voice unusually soft as I called his name.

I could feel his hand around me stiffen and tense a bit in surprise, before he pulled me closer than before.

"I'll protect you, I promise. Just stay with me." He whispered into my hair this time, voice tender and gentle.

"I trust you." I say, surrendering completely into his embrace.

Moments later, I could feel the strong energy making its way towards  us both, at a speed which would be fatal for a normal mortal.

The closer it got, the stronger the energy, until it finally reached us both.

And then it happened, just as it aimed for Holden, it collided with a strong invisible barrier within four meters range.

It bounced off, with such force, that when it collided with the earth, there was a quake.

Then a voice finally yelled, "They're coming, they're coming..."

It sounded so familiar, so much so, that it forced me to open my heavy leaded eyes.

"Jax? Is that you?" I ask, voice hoarse.

Holden looked down at me in shock, but his attention soon shifted to the steadily rising and floating blue figure from the ground.

"They're coming, they'll kill us all." He ranted, and I stared in horror at my spirit animal. He was a mess, bleeding from various scratches from his body. I wanted to move, but my weak body disagreed.

"How did this happen?" I ask, the energy in my voice slowly diminishing, as my consciousness gradually faded. I was going to black out sooner than I thought.

Behind Jax, I could feel the vibrations of strong and dark energy which could only belong to a demon.

"We've been tricked Mystic, the kingdom has been invaded." Jax said softly, with worry in his voice. "What?" I ask weakly, watching as Holden slowly lowered the shield so Jax could come closer. Then he lifted it once more.

"You've used a too much magical power, you're at the brick of death." Jax observed, and Holdens hands around me tightened at his words.

"I'll be fine. Right now, we need to go help my sister and her soul mate." I say, my eyes slowly succumbing to the darkness.

"I don't think that will be anytime soon." Jax says, and as soon as he says so, groups of demons emerge from the bushes and charge towards us.

I tried to fight the dizziness I felt, "I need to..." but my voice was also heavy as well. Holden leaned in and kissed my forehead, before whispering gently, "don't worry, first let me deal with them, then we'll go where you want, okay?" And I couldn't say anything more before falling finally into a deep slumber.
