Chapter 27 - Origins

"Sister?" I mutter after some moments of silence. I suddenly feel a heavy weight press in on me like gravity. It was suffocating. Myst seemed to be accessing my reaction, her eyes remained narrowed scrutinising my expression.

Kylan's expression seemed to be completely blank.

"I know its too much for you to take in. Especially after the death of our grandfather." She adds softly.

My eyes slowly harden at the mention of grand pa. "You mean MY grandfather." I seethed through my teeth, clenching my fists. Emphasising on the word: my.

If there was one thing I wasn't used to doing, it was sharing. And I wasn't planning on doing that anytime soon, especially with a total stranger who claimed to be my sister.

"Grand pa never mentioned you." I question, eyes pinning her with suspicion. I was ready for a fight if it came down to it.

Her eyes darken, and the grip on her trident tightens. I take a defensive stance, expecting her to attack me. But she does something contrary to what I expect, she chuckles and waves me off like I had just said a joke.

"You don't trust me, do you?" She asks me, after her laughter had died down. I relax a bit, exhausted at the amount of energy it had taken. "No one can be trusted these days." I say with a shrug.

"I'll prove it then." She said, getting from her throne before swimming towards me. I don't let her get too close.

Then she does it, she smiles. A warm welcoming smile only a dear one would give. "Welcome to your Kingdom, Mystic." She said  and I blinked, with the snap of her fingers the walls of the chamber instantly fades. Leaving us standing in a blank place, with nothing in it.

Like a void.

I turn to her, questioningly. She nods her head softly, "this is where it all began." And as though on cue, images begin to dance around us in the open blank space leaving me speechless.

*****

They were memories, I realized.

Memories of our parents, the people I never met. My mind goes blank as I can only stare at them in disbelief.

In the images I see how it all began. A human and a mermaid falling head over heels for each other. Then the disapproval of both parties. They believed they couldn't be one. The humans and the merpeople.... it just didn't make sense  to them. Then he is separated from his love, killed in cold blood. She turns to stone and rules her kingdom with her entire being. She had something precious she had to protect from them all.

The heirs.

Things were going fine until the wizards turned their back on her. She was an abomination to them all. They sided a demon, one which destroyed all of them without a second thought.

It ends tragically with her death, but with the survival of the heirs. One of the humans and one of the merpeople.

*****

Tears filled my eyes for a moment, I have to blink to stop them from falling. Myst is silent.

It was a heavy realization for both of us. We were the only hope this generation had. I for the humans and she for the merpeople. The only problem was, how would we stop Trigon?
