Chapter 33 - Chapter 32

"Assassination? "Roan repeated the word in a confused tone. He was confused at first but as the word resounded in his mind for a couple of seconds, It settled and his eyes widened in surprise.

"You mean you kill people? " Roan exclaimed and abruptly stood up

Isak nodded and Roan wanted to immediately get up and leave. He was no killer and he didn't want to be associated with one.

But as he was about to walk away, he remembered what he had done in the past few days. He had killed many which he had buried in the back of his mind, trying to forget. But it all came crashing down as guilt gnawed at his heart and mind leaving him breathless. He sat back down as he tried to control his emotions.

But all the emotional turmoil vanished as if he didn't just nearly have a mental breakdown. Another surprise but he was used to it at this point. It wasn't the first time it happened and probably wouldn't be the last.

Isak sat in front of Roan witnessing the changes that his expression went through. From surprise to solemn to guilty and then expressionless. It was as if he had just gone through a rollercoaster of emotions. Isak was patient as he waited for Roan to digest the information that he had given him. Roan was a mage, a very important asset for any organization whether it's the top organizations like the church, Royal Family or even the Arcane Association. And for a medium-sized organization like Obsidian Blade, a magus was extremely important. Even a rejected magus with half-decent talent was more important than even a true knight. Only a knight Champion could match up to the importance and influence of a magus. So, if Isak were to rope Roan in then their branch would be a force to be reckoned with. And they might even have a chance of being promoted from just a tertiary branch to a secondary branch.

Roan cleared his mind and thought about what to do. He needed money and it was a very glaring need if he wanted to survive. And the only source of his income, the adventurers guild was now just a husk in this town leaving him unemployed.

But was money enough to turn him into a killer? He had already killed people before but that was only when his life was on the line. This was different. He would be tasked to kill people for money and those who had done him nothing wrong.

While Roan didn't consider himself a saint after what he had been through the last couple of weeks which felt like a lifetime now that he thought about it, he still had morals and principles. The morals and principles that had been ingrained into his kind by Ruth while growing up.

So, it wasn't an easy decision to make whether he wanted to throw away his morals and principles and embrace an identity that would see him become a killer. He needed time.

"I need some time to think. "Roan said.

Isak nodded, "Take as much time as you and if you decide to join us then you can come back here. "

Isak didn't seem angry at Roan for not accepting the offer which improved Roan's impression of him.

Roan nodded at Isak and walked away. He passed the receptionist who now looked at Roan with a serious expression. But Roan was in deep thought as he exited the guild and didn't even notice the man.

And as soon as Roan exited the guild, the man at the reception swiftly got out of the counter and walked towards Isak.

"Why did you call him inside? " The man asked.

But Isak just shook his head and said, "You'll know when the time comes. " Isak was confident that Roan would accept his offer and become an assassin for the Obsidian Blade. And only then, he would reveal Roan to the others.
