Luen's POV
After we got home, Alex asked Juni for sometime to speak with her. After she signalled to me to go in before her, I went in giving them space to talk. I was also super excited to meet uncle. He's been away for like 2 years now at the border and I haven't seen him since he got back. As I stepped into the house, I saw him sitting on the couch watching the news.
"Uncle Nick." I called as I rushed forward to embrace him from the back while he was sitting. I could feel him smile as he ruffled my hair;he usually does that to Juni and I. I moved to sit on the couch with him
"How is my chirpy doing?" he asked.
I hooked my hands around his arm as I responded
"I'm fine but I'm angry." I said making an annoyed face.
"Oh, who made my chirpy annoyed?" he asked teasingly.
"Uncle don't call me chirpy, I don't talk much again see and I'm annoyed because you didn't get me any gift." I said pouting.
"Who said you don't talk much again?" he asked feigning surprise making me pout more. He laughed and ruffled my hair more
"Even if you talk less now, you would always be my chirpy and who said I didn't get you gifts? I bought lots of presents for you guys." he said making me smile as I hugged him telling him welcome.
Uncle have always treated me just like his daughter and I also see him as my father. I didn't get the chance to know my dad as all I heard was he left mum when she was pregnant and she sure doesn't want to talk about him. In as much as I would like to know my dad, he's absence wasn't felt as uncle made sure I didn't feel it. He would take Juni and I out when we were kids and as a talkative, I earned the name chirpy as the birds chirping non stop in the park. I am so elated to see him again after a long time.
I stood up from the couch walking towards the kitchen where I met aunt and Alee preparing pastries. I greeted her and tried to steal a pastry. She laughed at my action without stopping me. While gnawing on the pastry and resting on the counter,
"You know aunt, if I had done that to mum, she would have chased me round the house just to get it back. She said I look like a pig." I said making faces and scrunching up my nose to show my annoyance for mum. Aunt laughed .
"That sounds so much like Maggie.You know, when she was pregnant for you, she would crave for lots of things but her system were not allowing her have what she wanted so she said when her baby comes, she won't let her off. I guess she's having her pay back now." aunt said chuckling. "How is she doing?" she asked as she handed some packaged pastries to me while carrying the rest.
"She's okay, just out to get me. Are these for us?" I asked taking them from her hands
"Hm, it's for the sleepover. I know you guys love late night snacks." she said as we entered the dinning.
"Why can't mum be like you." I asked jokingly making her chuckle.
She looked towards the sitting room and asked,
"Where is June?" Uncle turned towards us also expecting an answer.
"Oh, she's outside talking with Alex." I said gesturing to the door as I answered.
"Ohh! How are they going?" aunt asked in a light tone but loud enough for me to hear.
"They are doing okay just waiting for that slow boy to ask the question." I said making a face like I wanted to beat Alex for being so slow in confessing his feelings. Laughing, aunt said while going to meet her husband.
"You should go check on her while we'll go upstairs for a while."
"Okay, I will after sometime." I said not wanting to disrupt their conversation.
"Okay, we'll be down soon and stop stealing the pastries or it will finish before it's even time to have it." she said laughing as she caught me taking another pastry to eat.
I gave her an awkward smile making both her and uncle shake their heads at me. You can't blame me, two inanimate things I don't joke with 'food and money'. I took the pastry in hand and went to sit on the couch. Picking up the remote, I scanned for channels to watch and settled for a cartoon channel as Alee was also with me.
After sometime, I decided to go check on June and Alex. I stealthily opened the door and the first thing I was greeted with was Alex pacing before getting out the long awaited question.
"I've been..," he breathed a little and cleared his throat before continuing. "Seeing that we've been going out lately and our relationship have improved, I was thinking," he ruffled his hair scattering it in the process. Was he really this nervous? Oh, I wish Luka was here, he could have laughed at him so damn hard.
"Oh my God, how do I say this". He palmed his face while Juni was looking all confused and expectant. Taking his hands away from his face,
"Umm, I want to ask, uhm will you be my girlfriend?" He asked in a rushed tone.
Interesting, I smirked as I leaned on the door not making a single sound so as not to alert them of my presence. The situation was an example of element of surprise on a higher level.
