It can no longer be denied what Frans has experienced because two hospitals have declared him infertile. This fact made Frans down and he ignored the busyness in the office. Meanwhile, Paola still stays by his side and is willing to accept all of Frans' shortcomings. In fact, for the sake of the smooth running of the marriage that had been arranged, it was decided to cover up the situation from their parents and continue with the wedding plans, which were only counting the days. Of course, it was Paola who suggested the plan, even though she was rejected by Frans because she wanted to be honest with her parents. On the other hand, Frans feels lucky to have found a woman like Paola who is willing to accept all of her flaws. Her attitude touched Frans' heart and he felt happy to have a woman like him. An agreement was reached between the two where they would hide the fact from the families of both parties. So, slowly, Frans's condition improved a little, even though his attitude was not as happy as before. The change was obvious and realized by both parents. However, Frans tries desperately to hide the situation and this is the first time he has ever lied to them.
The day continues to pass and the wedding will soon be held in a week. Due to the weekend, Frans is of course off from his busy work at the office and has just finished lunch with his parents. As usual, they would spend their time just having fun in the living room with the TV already on and showing the afternoon news. There was laughter from the room hearing such an exciting story from Elena. A smile was also etched on Frans' lips when this was realized and made them relieved because Frans was acting normal as before, even though he thought something had happened. However, suddenly the casual conversation was startled by the arrival of someone and made them stare in the direction of the sound until an elderly man appeared with anger etched on his face.
"Uncle Yosef?" Frans said in a low voice and two eyes bulged because he was surprised by the presence of Paola's parents when there was no news beforehand. Frans could see the eyes were so sharp and fixed on him, that another voice greeted him first.
"Yosef. What's wrong? Please sit down!" said Reynolds invitingly as he was the head of the family in the house. There was no answer from Yosef, other than stepping back and stopping right in front of the table where Reynold had gotten up from his seat followed by Elena.
"Good that you are all home. Read this!"
Roughly, Yosef threw an envelope at Reynold and it fell to his feet. He hurriedly bent down to reach for the envelope with a feeling of confusion. After successfully grabbing it, he could see a famous hospital logo in Jakarta stamped on the envelope. However, Reynold didn't open it right away because he instead turned to Elena and Frans who had been silent since earlier. From his sitting position, Frans could see what envelope Yosef gave him just now and was powerless to control the situation.
"Open up, Papa!" Elena's voice sounded impatient to know its contents. And so, Reynold hurriedly complied and finally found a piece of paper he was reading silently. Her eyes widened as she read what was written there. That reaction made Elena curious and read it too, then covered her mouth as if she couldn't believe it, then sat weakly on the sofa.
"Barren," Elena whispered very softly after reading the contents. As for Yosef's eyes, he looked annoyed at Frans who was unmoving and his jaw also tightened because out of nowhere the results of the examination reached Yosef.
"Where did you get this?" asked Reynold in a clear voice and held up the paper as if confirming what was being asked.
"It's in Paola's car. So you know the test results?" Yosef answered, looking sarcastically at Reynold. However, a shake was made, but Yosef was seen grinning with a quite cynical smile.
"I don't know because all I know is fine. Isn't that right, Frans?" Reynold replied matter-of-factly where he was telling the truth just now. Elena, who was already sitting weakly, also turned her face towards Frans who was standing with a shocked expression and that convinced him, even though he didn't get an answer yet. Before answering, Frans' eyes looked at Elena who looked sad and shook her head because she hoped it wasn't true.
"Sorry, Pa. What is written there is true and I am barren."
Everyone is silent. No one replied to what Frans had just said, except for Elena who covered her mouth again followed by shaking her head. However, he was unable to comment at this time due to the shock of the confession. While Reynold was still standing with his right hand holding the paper with a feeling that was no less surprised. As for Yosef, he looked at Frans with hatred, followed by an etched cynical smile.
"Good. So it's true that you deliberately hid your infertility from us? You're an impostor, Frans!" The hurtful comment came back and made Reynold glare. However, his mouth that wanted to reply was immediately restrained because Frans said the sentence faster.
"I didn't mean to trick you, Uncle! I meant to tell you, but—"
"WHAT? COULD YOU DENY IT AFTER I GOT THE EVIDENCE? DIDN'T YOU ASK PAOLA TO SHUT UP ABOUT THIS TRUTH, HUH?"
"What? I didn't do that to her, Uncle! Instead, she was the one who—"
"YOU SHUT UP, FRANS! DON'T TRY TO ACCEPT PAOLA WHO LIED ABOUT YOUR BENEFITS! DO YOU THINK WE ARE STUPID TO BE FOOLED? YOU ARE VERY WRONG AND YOU CAREFULLY USE PAOLA WHO LOVES YOU SO MUCH BUT ACCUSED HER TO BE BENEFITS OF BENEFITS."
"What? Uncle what are you talking about!? Benefit from what?" Frans was confused by all of Yosef's words just now. Reynolds, who was listening, of course, needed an explanation for all of Yosef's accusations because Frans kept denying them.
"Wait! What's the matter, Frans? Explain what Yosef means!" Reynold couldn't resist commenting because everything was confusing now. Yosef's face had turned red from the unbearable overflow of emotion in his heart.
"I also don't understand what Uncle Yosef's words mean, Pa. I love Paola and I don't take advantage of anything from her. Am I crazy to hurt her like that, even though I don't understand what Uncle Yosef just meant!" The denial sounded confident and Frans was very brave to answer Yosef's sharp gaze, who smiled sarcastically. Inwardly, Frans was also bewildered because Yosef was not clear about what he was discussing, except for the fact that infertility had been acknowledged.
The three men exchanged glances whereupon the atmosphere of the room turned tense. The commotion that ensued was interesting to hear because two servants appeared who was eavesdropping behind the wall since Yosef's scream was heard.
"Listen, Yosef. I'm sorry for not knowing about Frans's infertility. However, I also don't understand what you said that Frans used Paola. Can you explain what you mean?" In a calm voice, Reynold said he was just being an intermediary between Yosef and Frans. However, the lines of hatred were all too evident on Yosef's face and he didn't hesitate to answer.
"HE WAS THE ONE WHO ASKED PAOLA TO SHUT UP IF HE WAS INFERTILE. EVEN, HE SUGGESTED MAKING A FALSE REPORT IF THE ACTUAL PAOLA WAS INFERTILE!" Yosef answered deliberately in a loud voice as if letting the whole house know about Frans's misfortune. Frans seemed to shake his head where he had never said such a thing.
"No. I never asked her to do that. Instead, she suggested covering up that I was infertile from you. I never had the slightest thought of making a false report just to turn things around. That's not true, Uncle!"
"WHAT? SO YOU ACCUSED PAOLA OF LYING?"
"That's not what it means!"
"I THINK YOUR BRAIN IS WRONG FOR TALKING THAT ABOUT PAOLA IN FRONT OF ME, FRANS!" Yosef replied, not accepting that Reynold heard the argument between the two of them getting fiercer. Meanwhile, Elena seemed to cover her ears because Yosef's voice sounded like he was going crazy. Tired of talking to Yosef, who found it difficult to understand, Frans turned his gaze to Reynold and hoped that he would believe his confession.
"For God's sake, Pa. I didn't do that to Paola. It's not true!"
"ENOUGH, FRANS! I'M SICK OF TALKING TO A SLICK MAN LIKE YOU."
"Don't worry, Yosef. There must be a misunderstanding and we'd better talk about it carefully. Sit down first!" Reynold tried to find a solution and hoped that his words would be heard. However, Yosef's shake was seen followed by a clear sentence that left everyone stunned.
"THE MARRIAGE SHOULD BE CANCELED BECAUSE I DON'T WANT TO HAVE A DISABLED SON-IN-LAW!"
