Chapter 2 - Tutorial (1)

"Of course I would choose Nightmare" there was no other option for me.

[You have chosen nightmare, please enter the designated portal]

Right after the notification was released into my field of view another portal appeared in front of me. It was different from the portal that appeared in my classroom, that one was a swirling mass of green but this one was completely black.

It was something to take note of but not something that I truly bothered thinking of. Instead what I truly wanted to do was activate my skill.

[10…9…8]

However before I could even think on how I was to activate my skill the system started to count down. I didn't know the consequences of letting it get to zero so I didn't dally any longer. I practically ran to the portal, my feet carrying me much faster than I would usually be able to achieve.

In just a second I was before the portal. My hand reached out to the portal, a strange force pulling me in as soon as a single finger touched it.

Again my vision was taken from me, a void of nothingness being my only companion. Though this time it only lasted for what was a second.

[Tutorial Mission #1]

[Objective survive]

That was all the information I got. Almost as soon as my vision was returned to me this panel appeared in my vision. Though after I had quickly read it I looked around and saw the vast plains around me, grass reached to my knees even when I stood up tall. It was a wild and untamed world that greeted me.

[Please select a weapon]

Moments after I had taken in my surroundings another message had appeared, asking for my preferred weapon.

'What are my options' I mentally asked, but even as the seconds ticked by I got no response.

Finally I just sighed and asked for a sword. It was something that I was used to, even if my dream was to create the greatest weapon I knew that to do that I would need to understand the weapon. That was why I knew how to use a sword, I had dedicated the years that I could not forge or even research forging to the blade. To obtain a complete understanding of the blade was my goal, even after I had started to apprentice to a blacksmith I had never stopped practicing with the sword. It was something that I could not stop myself from doing, the more I practiced the closer I felt to the blade.

"Huh!" I gasped, a blade being deposited into my hands broke me out of my thoughts.

'What was that…' I thought to myself, every single memory of practice, every swipe of th e blade and every emotion associated with it was brought to the forefront of my mind. It was so clear that I couldn't even fathom forgetting it.

A notification rang in my ear, though before I could properly digest the meaning of it I was attacked.

CLANG

It was only the hard fought muscle memory that had saved me from being impaled. A dagger was so close to my eye that I could see my reflection in it. The scared eyes that greeted me.

Long ingrained instincts helped me to ignore the fear that came from that near death and allowed me to swipe my sword.

My muscles tensed, the sword being swung down in the instant that the dagger was starting to recede. The force of the sweep and the fact that the dagger was being withdrawn all came together into a blow that knocked It out of the faceless creature's hand.

More instincts that I didn't know I had flared up and with a follow up slash the creature was decapitated.

"Hah" "hah" "hah" I kept on panting, my hands on my knees as my mouth tried again and again to throw up yet nothing came from it.

I looked up, my eyes looking to the unknown creature that had attacked me.

A faceless black shadow, one with arms and legs, yet limbs in places they should not be. A hand reaching from the chest, legs that seemed to appear and disappear into two different places. Most likely to facilitate their movement. The only normal part was the placement of the head, or at least where I would assume the head would be.

When I inspected the wound, I had expected there to be blood but when I saw the decapitated head there was no blood, no fluid to show me that it even lived.

I placed a hand on it and almost pulled it back in surprise.

[You have gained a ]

The figure had disappeared, a colorless crystal like object replacing it.

"What do I do with this?" I thought out loud, my hand inspecting the object.

[A rune may be used to increase the stat in question]

[To use a rune one must crush it]

As if to answer my question, the system appeared again, its message taking up my vision for a second before disappearing.

CRACK

With the tensions of my muscles, I broke the crystal in my hands. Either it was extremely brittle or I was stronger than I remembered because it was laughably easy to turn it into mere fragments.

A weird feeling appeared in my muscles, I flexed my fingers and it felt as if I could do more things with them.

When I opened my status again I found my dexterity had increased by .1, it wasn't a huge increase but I could feel the effects of it.

The hand that held the sword I was given swung out and it felt easier. As if the little resistance I had to my movements was less stiffened.

"Hm" I hummed out loud, remembering that I hadn't even inspected the sword that I was given. I was too preoccupied defending myself to even think of inspecting it.

Though now that I had the thought in my mind I couldn't help but look down at it.

A steel longsword, one crafted roughly. A feeling of distaste filled my being. The sword had no soul, just as every mass produced sword did. I could work with it but the feeling it gave off was off putting, enough that I wanted to just destroy it. The only use of this sword would be as materials.

CLANG

"Shit" I ground out, another one of those creatures had attacked me while I was inspecting the sword that I was given. Though it wasn't alone this time.

It seemed as if that first one was extremely lucky for me, for it to be alone allowed me to kill it.
