Chapter 8 - Tracks

The kobolds chittered, the language that they spoke indecipherable to me despite the inherent understanding that we had.

I watched on as they spoke to each other, a conversation happening between the apparent leader and one other. Soon they stopped though and looked towards me. An indecipherable expression on their faces.

A gesture of their hands, and I followed, curious at what they had gestured for.

Behind me were the curious faces of the other kobolds but I had them stay here, if we were going somewhere it would be easier if I had less people to take with me.

I strapped the sword to my side and followed.

Illuminated caverns gave way to complete darkness. A hand reached to my shirt and I jumped back however I soon sighed in relief as I noticed it was just one of the two Kobolds that had gestured for me to follow.

Honestly I was just following their footsteps, it was hard to see anything so I had to go on sound.

It was hard to hear how quiet they were but with a significant strain on my ear I could hear the faint taps of their feet on the ground.

I suspected though, that the only reason I could detect their footsteps was the increase in dexterity. It most likely encompassed more than just speed and balance.

I looked back down to the Kobold that held my shirt and followed in his footsteps, a sense of severity being transmitted. It was why every step of mine was carefully planned to step on every place that the Kobold had stepped on.

My caution was rewarded when I saw a rat that had scurried along the ground of the cave we were in turn to red paste as it wrongly stepped on some place along the path we were on.

I gulped, my anxiety spiking as I watched my step even more cautiously. Our pace had slowed to a crawl but I was fine with that, the lingering fear of seeing the death of that rat had instilled more than enough fear in me to overcome my impatience.

Eventually we had reached the destination, a flame of light illuminated the cavern that we were in.

A ravine like opening allowing the sun to glare it's harsh rays of light upon my skin. I squinted, my hand covering my eyes as I looked up and basked in the glory of the sun.

However I couldn't bask for much longer as I noticed movement to the side. One of the Kobolds that had dragged me here was pointing towards another crevice.

I looked over and saw footsteps, they were large. At least the size of my own body. Whatever creature that those belonged to was giant. Something that I could not fight.

I thought of the quest that the system had given us.

'Kill 100 of one species.' I recalled in my mind.

"Heh" I laughed out loud, "ridiculous"

It wasn't going to happen, unless I found some major opportunity it would be more prudent to develop.

If I use the lesser quests that were repeatable I would be able to dominate the leaderboard with points m. Not that it was much of a leaderboard with only four people including me but still I could dominate it.

That was, as long as they didn't find out the little chest that I did.

However this came at a cost, one that might actually hurt me in the long run. If I didn't hunt and took the East route would I be able to survive the tutorial? The actual tower.

It was a hard decision, one of either safety in cheats or of hardships and possible death.

I didn't know how long this part of the tutorial was going to go in which is why I needed to decide now, the tracks were fresh and if we assume they only have two feet then there would be at the most 3 of them or at the least one of alien make.

I looked back, to the two kobolds that had followed me and to the sword at my waist.

I was the only one that was armed between the two of them but that didn't meant that that had to last.

Just looking around I could see materials that I could make weapons out of.

Vines that reached down from above, black obsidian that seemed to grow on the rocks.

"I've decided" I declare to the two Kobolds listening, "we're tracking these things"

Behind me I could hear the faint chittering of their mouths as they seemed to be elated.

However we weren't going to move immediately, first things first I needed to make weapons for them.

With what I had at hand I could make some basic spears, I didn't have the materials for anything else nor the facilities.

"Grab that… and that…" I pointed towards varying materials, anything that my intuition told me would be of good quality I had them bring me.

Whether that was a particularly strong vine, a stick that seemed to have fallen from above us, or even the obsidian that strangely grew on the rocks.

Everything that I needed was gathered before me.

I first took the both pieces of obsidian that had caught my eye and placed them over my leg. A covering between me and it.

I picked up a round rock that I had placed to the side of me and with carefully placed blows, whittled the obsidian down to a triangle shape.

After that I borrowed the Kobolds strength and made a carefully placed hole in the bottom part of the obsidian.

After that I took the stick and again borrowed the kobolds claws. I used them to make the stick straight and get rid of any imperfections. After that I picked up the vines, obsidian and the stick.

I made a place for the blade of the spear in the stick and placed it in there, drilling a home between the two parts of the sticks and threaded the vine through it before tying it around as tightly as I could.

I placed it off to the side and started to craft another one. While I was doing that I could see the kobold getting used to the spear. Swinging it around like a child with a stick.

Idly I noted that I would need to fix that but right now I was focused on creating my second spear.
