Chapter 55 - Chicanery

"Yes that is correct."

"Well...this has become a little more complicated." Hecate remarked.

"H-how could something like this happen? What reason would Duke Ferdinand have to overthrow his brother?" Emille pondered.

"Isn't it obvious?" All three man turned to look at Donellan, looks of confusion on their faces.

"Although this might not be public knowledge, Hecate and Emille, you guys should be aware of the inner workings of the royal family.

Ferdinand and Asmodeus might be brother's in name, but not so much by blood."

A look of realization could be seen on Hecate's face.

"You are right, I can't believe I forgot. Duke Ferdinand initially was a prince from Ortus but to due some political strife in the kingdom, he was brought to Novellus and was later on taken in by the Killian family. He was suppose to be the next air after the late King Aeron but unexpectedly, the Queen had given birth to Asmodeus and since he was related to the King by blood, he became the next heir."

"Right, it would make sense that Duke Ferdinand would want to overthrow his younger brother since the position was his at first, but he didn't have the chance to argue his case considering how strict the royal counsel is. They would never allow a person who wasn't a direct descendant to take over the thrown. So due to jealousy and maybe even vengeance, having a coup would be more beneficial to him... but it would be an incredible risk as well." Emille continued.

"Yea, if he were found out, not only would this be considered conspiring against the King but also treason which can be punishable by death." Hecate added.

"That's right." Donellan replied.

He got up from his chair and made his way towards Matthias who had be quiet the entire time.

"....Your information is compelling but is isn't of much use to us at the moment considering how all of this is just speculation. There hasn't been any concrete moves made just yet and so we cannot take any actions at the moment... but you were aware of that." He said while bending down to get a good look at Matthias.

Matthias on the other hand was sweating bullets. He was trying with all his might not to move a single muscle. His face remained expressionless not leaving any room for doubt.

Donellan could admit while observing the man before that he was an extremely skilled person, he was almost unreadable and had he been anyone else, he would've bought his act but alas, the person he was dealing with was Donellan. Someone who would not be deceived.

"If these are the only cards you have for me, then I must say, things are not looking well for you my friend." He said in a soft but threatening tone.

At this point and time, Matthias truly did not any more cards to play. He was certain that after dropping that last bomb, that Donellan would take the bait. But this man remained unmoved.

There was nothing left he could do.

He wished he could get out of here and get in contact with the Syndicate but there would be no way out of here.

The best thing for him to do would be to wait and have someone from the group make contact with him.

He hoped that his disappearance would be known by now, and that Mithridates would send one of his people to find him.

All he could do now was stall, stall for as long as he possibly could.

How he would do that remained a mystery to him.
