I turned in my sleep and hit something hard and warm with my hand. I frowned, blinking the haze of sleep away. I didn't know what time it was but it was early, earlier than usual anyway. It was still dark outside, not even the break of dawn yet. When I finally came to, I turned my head and saw Mason deep asleep, next to me. I blinked a few more times, trying to get a grasp on whether I was dreaming or not. I had dreamed of that moment so many times that I had trouble believing what my eyes were seeing. Eagle spread in the middle of the bed was none other than Mason Kinnaird, deep in his sleep. I was still reeling, watching him softly breathing. The big bad wolf was in my bed.I shuffled closer and slowly slipped under his arm, and rested my head on the pillow, close enough to feel his breath on my lips.
I couldn't resist the urge to kiss him, so I softly pressed my lips on his. Mason groaned in his sleep and smiled.
" Go to sleep, woman" He mumbled, half asleep with his eyes closed, making me inwardly giggle. I glanced at the watch. It showed half past four in the morning. With an idiotic grin on my face, I closed my eyes, still nose to nose with him, rubbing the back of his hand with my thumb. I was too happy to go back to sleep. It was the first time that I woke up with him in my bed. I wasn't planning on letting that sight go to waste. It could be the last. Mason inhaled and inched closer to my face and kissed my nose. He couldn't go back to sleep either. I opened my eyes, with a wide grin, letting my eyes roam over his feature, taking in every detail of the handsome man at my side. When his eyes fluttered open, I closed mine and bit my lip to stop myself from giggling. I was floating on a different kind of high and I loved it as much as I loved him.
" I know you're not asleep. No one grins like that when sleeping." Mason rolled onto his side and pulled me into his arms. I couldn't help myself, I was ecstatic.
" How would you know? I smile while I sleep " I looked up at him, still grinning. Mason hummed " You're a horrible liar. Quit while you're ahead." Mason whispered against my forehead and lowered his head back on the pillow. I wondered if he knew I was head over heels with him. I never said it out loud.
" It's early" Mason broke my train of thought" Too early. " He took a deep breath " I'll be out of reach for the next few days. A week at most." Mason paused when I raised my head to look at him " I left money and the chequebook in the office just in case you need something. Enid already knows about it." Mason pushed himself up to lean against the headboard " Lily, sign the papers, please and send them to Mr Perry to have them finalised." Mason added with a frown and I knew he was serious about it.
" Where are you going?" I worriedly asked, shuffling on the bed to face him, pulling the sheet over my shoulders.
" It's a business trip. If all goes well, I should be back in a few days. If not then it might take longer." He still didn't say where he was going. Mason was vague about his work and never gave a straight answer.
" Alright. What will happen if I sign the papers?" I needed to know what will happen once the legal bond between us was dissolved.
Mason frowned " You'll be able to access the inheritance that Hector and Anika left you without my consent. Although, most of it is in investments. There is a hefty amount in the bank but you can't access it if you don't sign the papers, Lily. So please, just sign them." Mason added with furrowed brows. That soft tone he'd used on me, worried me a little. I felt like something was off, but couldn't put my finger on it. I didn't know enough to even have a basic understanding of what was going on in his life outside those doors.
I nodded " I will sign them tomorrow." I absently mumbled, still a little confused as to where it left us.
" Mason" I softly called, and cleared my throat when he hummed " If I sign the papers" I paused again, still trying to decide " Where does that leave us?" I asked something along those lines. Complicated didn't even begin to cover what we were.
Mason frowned, and fell silent, still looking at me with a keen eye. My blood froze and suddenly felt like I was in the Arctic. I was regretting every single word that came out of my mouth.
" It changes nothing," He finally replied, running his fingers through his tousled mousy blond hair. Those were the very same words that he said the night we slept together for the first time.
The lines were so blurred that it was impossible to put a name on what we were.
