GOOD THINGS DON'T LAST LONG
Debbie was a mess. She had been trying to quit drugs for two months now, but the withdrawal symptoms were unbearable. Every day was a struggle, and she was constantly fighting the urge to use.
One evening, Debbie couldn't take it anymore. She gave in to her craving and decided to use drugs to alleviate the pain. She thought she was alone in the house, and nobody would know what she was doing, but just as she was about to take the drugs, her sister Camily walked in.
Debbie was caught red-handed, and she froze in her spot. Camily's face was twisted in disgust and disappointment. She couldn't believe her sister was still using drugs after everything they had happened to her.
"What the hell are you doing, Debbie? Are you seriously taking drugs again?" Camily shouted, her voice filled with anger.
Debbie felt ashamed and embarrassed. She didn't know what to say. She couldn't explain herself, and she didn't want to face the consequences.
"I'm sorry, Cam. I just can't... I can't take it anymore." Debbie tried to defend herself, her voice frail and weak.
Camily didn't want to hear any of it. She had seen enough. She knew that the only way to help Debbie was to be tough on her.
"You're sorry? Is that it?" Camily scoffed. "Do you realize how much you're hurting yourself and everyone around you? I thought you were better than this, Debbie."
Debbie couldn't take the guilt and shame anymore. She broke down in tears, feeling like a failure.
Camily watched as her sister fell apart and felt remorseful for being so harsh. But she knew that she had to be tough on Debbie, she felt her sister was being selfish.
"Debbie, listen to me. I know things are tough and you are still undergoing therapy but you brought it on yourself, you Debbie! No one but you, you couldn't see who to love you but a junkie like Pablo even after everything, you have the guts to show your face and worst of all, you became a liability not just to mom and dad but also to your siblings, to me Debbie." Camily was still hurt from Debbie's past action, she felt Debbie was let off easily.
Debbie nodded, wiping her tears away, " what do you want me to do Camily?" .
Camily looked at Debbie straight in the eyes, "just stop being a problem to this family, you are embarassing us. The other day, I went out with my friends and someone was whispering behind me, they were talking about how you ran off with your junkie boyfriend and then you became a junkie yourself, you see how embarassing it is?"
Jack just came back from playing football with the neighborhood kids when he heard Camily shouting at Debbie, he walked into the room and looked at his sisters, Debbie was looking sad while Camily was looking at Debbie as if she wanted to tear Debbie up, his eyes caught something on the bed and he went closer to see it more, he looked at it carefully and smelt it, his eyes widened in surprise as he realized what it was, he looked at Debbie, he was filled with mixed emotions, he did not know whether to be hurt or to call her therapist or to call their mom. The feeling that was most overwhelming was disappointment.
He felt disappointed, after everything, his beloved sister has disappointed him again.
He stared at her, disappointment evident in his eyes, he shook his head and left the room.
Camily looked at her sister in disgust once again, "that's how you keep disappointing us sis." She said and walked out of the room.
