David got dressed and went to his father's company. It was the only thing that could keep him sane. The company was rowdy with congratulatory messages for his wedding from the employees when he got there. He was able to maneuver his way into his office and sat down. His head in his hands. The wedding was supposed to be a silent one but his parents made sure people knew.
"Welcome Sir" Rachel his assistant greeted flirtatiously as she went into his office. David looked up and raised his brows at her. "Happy marriage life".
He nodded. "Anything else?"
"I have a bunch of paperwork that needs your signature Sir". She smiled as she adjusted the collar of her shirt, giving him a view of her cleavage. He knew what she was doing, what she always did to make him notice her and it always amused him. She was like a child. A bony tiny child.
"Give them to Edward. He is also a signatory". He instructed. Edward was his Uncle in charge of running the business in Florida.
"But...."
"Just go!" He roared. He was not in the mood. She was annoying him. He picked up the key to his car and left the building.
What was supposed to be two days of bad weather, lasted for four days but he was glad that the plane was able to take off.
Thinking of what Vanessa was doing and how she must be handling herself was driving him crazy but not reaching her on time was taking a toll on his sanity. Vanessa was an aggressive person. He knew that. Whenever she was angry, she hurt herself and it scared him to think of what she might have done to herself before he reached her. He shouldn't have informed her on the phone. That was his terrible mistake.
David had met Vanessa when he was attending a business lunch with a client of theirs three years ago in Texas. She got into the restaurant and his eyes immediately found hers and that was all it took. He had excused himself from the meeting and went to her and ever since then, she was the only woman in his life not until Joanna came along.
"We are here, Sir" The air hostess touched his shoulder. David opened his eyes and realized he had dozed off. Another car was waiting for him at the landing area. David took the driver's key and zoomed off.
It was time to meet Vanessa.
David got to the apartment, he was excited and realized he had missed her so much. He just prayed she was fine.
He was met by the security personnel who opened the gate for him. He slid the car window when the security walked up to him. David was scared to ask if she was alright.
"Welcome Sir" The security guard who was always happy to see David looked gloomy. His expression confirmed David's fear.
"Is she..is she?" David couldn't complete it.
"She is upstairs sir but...." David didn't wait to hear the rest as he got down from the car and hurriedly went upstairs.
He had always loved the apartment. It was the last house at that end of the street near a cliff. He always loved to wake up and watch the sunrise with Vanessa leaning on his shoulder. The view was always beautiful. But at that moment, the apartment was the least of his worries.
David's heart was racing when he walked up to the door and it was locked.
"Nessa!" He banged. "Vanessa open up! I am so sorry baby...I" He stopped when the door suddenly opened.
Standing behind the door was Vanessa. She was in a bathing rope and looked like she just got out of bed. David's eyes widened in surprise when he saw her. She looked hale and hearty. She doesn't seem surprised to see him.
David should have felt relieved but part of him felt somewhat confused. He had all the while been thinking she was in a terrible condition.
"Hey," Vanessa smiled. "Are you gonna keep standing there or are you coming in?"
With two strides, David stepped in.
"What do you care for?" She asked as she poured herself a glass of gin from the bottle laying carelessly on the couch. David noticed a smoked cigarette on a container near the couch. Vanessa was not a smoker.
"Did you invite someone to our apartment?" David asked, a bit of jealousness rising.
"I bet that is not why you are here". She snorted. "What do you want David?"
David stared at her, she wasn't giving him room to explain himself and he felt stupid and so out of control.
"You've not been picking up my calls" He accused.
"Why will I?" She scoffed. "To prove to me that you are married? Come on Dave" She rolled her eyes.
David pulled his hair. The conversation was not going as he thought. It took him days before he could reach her but her actions were uncalled for.
"Vanessa...I"
"Really David? What the hell do you want?" She demanded. "What were you expecting? That I become miserable? Curled up in bed all day and cried myself to death?" She giggled.
David just stared at her. She seemed a different person.
"Nessa!" A male voice yelled from the direction of the kitchen and David, with heart in his throat watched as a man in nothing but short came into view. He was dripping wet and it showed he was coming from the pool.
"Oh, I don't know you have a visitor," He said as he kissed her cheek. "Hi, I am Ronnie," The man said as he outstretched his hand to David but he was too shocked to react. The only thing on his mind was how could Vanessa do that to him?..
"I guess, I guess I will leave you two then" Ronnie said and disappeared into the house.
"How could you?" David asked, his voice filled with pain. He was hurt. Heartbroken. Was that what Vanessa felt when he told her he was getting married?
"How could I what David?" Vanessa snapped her head up and glared at him. "I am not the bad guy here! You got married! You moved on! I guess it is only fair if I do the same, don't you think?"
"I was not expecting it to be that fast!" David uttered
"Oh really?" She smirked. "What do you want me to do before you know it is the right time? You are so selfish!"
"You are the one I want Nessa and you know it!"
"You should have thought of that before you agreed to your father's proposal. Now get out!"
"Vanessa please listen...."David pleaded as he moved close to her.
"Just leave!" She yelled as she backed off.
David's legs felt heavy. His head was pounding and he felt lost. He made to leave but then faced her. He had a final question.
"Have you...Have you ever brought a man home while I was away?" He wanted to know. He wanted to know if she had ever cheated on him.
"No" She stated honestly. "It was just you"
"Goodbye Vanessa".
"Goodbye David," She said and watched him step out.
"David?" She called and he stopped, not turning to face her. "I am keeping the apartment," She said before slamming the door.
David laughed. Not because it was funny but because he was hurt. Vanessa hurt him. How could she think of the apartment in the middle of a crisis? He couldn't sleep, concentrate, or touch his legal bride because of her! He had abandoned everything, even a threat to his inheritance just so he could be with her!
"Damn it!" He punched the wall and bruised his knuckle. He hurriedly went downstairs, got in his car, and left.
It was time to move on.
