Joanna sat before her mirror, quickly applying her makeup. She knew she must hurry before Charlotte came bickering. It had been five days since their internship started and seven days since David's disappearance, not that it bothered her but she often wondered why he left. The only thing she knew from Charlotte was that he went to Florida.
David had kissed Joanna on the cheek and had told her he was getting some stuff and that was all. Maybe he had abandoned her after realizing that he could not live in a sham marriage. But whatever it was, she was glad that he wasn't around and she only shared the house with the maids.
The sound of a car honking brought Joanna back and she knew Charlotte had arrived. She quickly slipped on her shoes and ran downstairs.
"Always late!" Charlotte rolled her eyes when Joanna got into the car.
"Always early" Joanna retorted as the car sped off.
They were headed to a Hospital. Joanna had always wanted to be a Doctor. A pediatrician to be precise and Charlotte a gynecologist. After High school, they had to go on a one-year internship and submit an attestation before they could be accepted into their preferred medical college.
"So is he...." Charlotte started but was interrupted by Joanna.
"Back?" Joann signed. "No. He is not and I guess it is time you stop asking".
"If Evelyn knew, she would go crazy" Charlotte giggled.
"That is why I don't want her to know. I am not up for some crazy drama" Joanna said. "I missed two family dinners and I keep bringing up excuses for us, for him. I always used the hospital as a cover. I don't know when it will last" She sounded tired.
Joanna was glad she had only been invited to dinner by their parents. She was glad they didn't bother to visit her.
"Hey," Charlotte called out, her eyes still on the road. "Everything is gonna be fine. Ok?"
Joanna nodded as the hospital came into view. Charlotte parked at the parking lot and they both rushed into the entrance and to the changing room. They headed to their lockers.
"What time is your shift ending today?" Charlotte asked Joanna as they slipped into their uniforms.
"By 2. Why?" Joanna asked suspiciously.
"I was thinking we should have a girls' night out. You need to come off your horses and take a break" Charlotte suggested as she folded her wear and pushed them into her locker.
"I don't think I want..."
"Did I say, you have a say?" Charlotte smirked. "See you later" and she quickly left before Joanna argued.
Joanna signed and tied her hair in a ponytail before heading to the children's ward.
"Good morning Doctor Pine" She greeted the elderly Doctor going for a round in the ward. "Morning Nurse Susanne," She said to the nurse accompanying him.
"Morning" He smiled kindly. "Wanna check the kids?"
"Of course" Joanna couldn't keep the smile off her face as she went to him. It was just five days since she started but the kids love her. Hell, she loves them more.
"Taylor here is starting his chemotherapy tomorrow," Dr pine told her as he pointed to a kid lying on a bed. "His Surgery is going to take place later".
Joanna's face immediately changed. Taylor was her favorite patient. She walked up to his bed and knelt, her face inches away from him. Taylor was a six-year-old kid and he didn't deserve cancer. She felt the tears but she knew better than to cry. It would only weaken him and it was unprofessional to do that.
"Am I gonna die?" Taylor asked her.
"No, of course not, Darling" She smiled. "You are a conqueror and shall deal with everything" She made faces and he chuckled loudly.
"Dr. Pine, a minute please". Joanna pulled the Dr aside. "I wanna be with him in the theatre room please"
"You know it is not possible." Dr. Pine said disapprovingly. "You are just here to know the basics. Surgery is too complex"
"Please Dr, I want to be there for Taylor" She gave him puppy eyes. "I won't do anything. I will just watch it. Please?"
"Fine" He signed dejectedly., "I will see what I can arrange"
Joanna called Charlotte and canceled their night out. She laughed as she heard her friend pouting over the phone. She was glad it wasn't going to happen.
"Just go home without me. I will be late" Joanna had said and hung up.
The surgery took about 4hours. Joanna held Taylor's hand even when he was brought back to the ward. She refused to leave his side as she watched him sleep.
"Hey," Nurse Susanne whispered as she came close to her. Joanna opened her tired eyes and looked at the nurse." Dr. Pine called an Uber for you. He said you should take a day off tomorrow and rest".
"Alright. Thanks" She smiled and stood up. She kissed Taylor on the cheek and left the room. She was too tired to go to the changing room and headed straight outside. The Uber was waiting at the entrance and she gave him the address.
It was very late when Joanna got home. Her legs were sore and she quickly pulled off her shoes and held them as she climbed down from the car. The gate was opened and she went into the living room. She knew she would be alone as the maid had retired for the day. The living room was dark but she knew her way in. She made her way to the stairs when the light suddenly came up. She yelped and turned, scared to see the intruder but then her heartbeat increased when she saw David seated on one of the couches in the living room.
David looked like he just come out of work. His suit was hanging by the couch and he had loosened the blue tie on his white shirt. His blue eyes were sparkling dangerously but he looked more like some sexy criminal boss she watched in movies. His hair looked neat and smooth.
