Chapter 33 - Duty

Lucien listened quietly, he wanted to change the topic to something lighter but couldn't. It wasn't every day his father was in the mood to talk about things that mattered to him, or in this case, people.

"When I saw you for the first time, I was sure there was a mistake. You had blue eyes just like Hadassah, neither Lucretia nor myself had blue eyes. But the midwives had assured me that you were Lucretia's and that it was not a new phenomenon for a child to have an eye color different from their parents." King Magnus itched his heavily bearded chin.

"Do you regret not making the love of your life your queen?" Lucien asked, his voice solemn.

"No," Magnus shook his head, to Lucien's surprise. "I am a King with responsibilities to my people. As a king you would have to learn to put what is best for your people first, before yourself," he glanced at Lucien, "Do you understand?"

Lucien nodded.
