Chapter 21 - Chapter Twenty-One: Shopping Sprees And Late-Night Surprises

Ever's pov

The car ride to the mall was filled with awkward silence, but shortly after we arrived at the store we were able to bond over how adorable the baby clothes and toys looked.

"Look at this one, isn't it precious? " Paula held up a tiny light green dinosaur onesie that had a hood and I about died at its cuteness.

"It's so cute! Ooh! " I froze in my spot and placed a hand on my stomach, then I felt it again.

The babies just kicked for the first time.

"Ever? Honey, are you alright? What's wrong, do you feel sick again? Should we–"

"They kicked… "

"huh? " She looked at me confused as I lightly grabbed her hand and held it on my baby bump. When they kicked again, Paula let out a small gasp and looked at me in both shock and happiness.

"They kicked! " she repeated and I let out a laugh, wiping away tears that had formed in my eyes.

...…

After all that excitement, Paula and I decided to celebrate by getting ice cream sundaes.

"Why don't you call your friend Brianna to join us? I'm sure she'd like to hear about the exciting news! " she asked after telling the waitress our orders.

"you don't mind? "

"Of course not! We're celebrating, aren't we? The more the merrier! " she pulled out her phone, "in fact, I'll call Jade! "

Pulling out my phone I called Bri, only for it to go to voicemail twice. She usually answers the first second she hears the phone ring. I hope she's okay…

I decided to call a third time, and this time she answered right away.

ON THE PHONE

B: "HELLO?! Ever, is everything alright?! "

I had to pull the phone away from my ear because of how loud she was being.

E:  "I'm fine, why are you yelling? Where are you? "

B: "UMM, HANG ON I CAN'T HEAR YOU! "

E:  "Dammit Bri, will you please quit screaming! I would like to be able to hear my children's laughter!

B: "Sorry 'bout that… so what's up? "

I could still hear the faint sounds of… motorcycle engines? In the background.

E:  "Where are you? Paula and I are out celebrating with some ice cream and thought that you and Jade might want to join us! "

B: "Well… you see… I don't exactly know where I am… but I'm with Jade so don't worry I'm safe! What are you celebrating? Did something good happen? "

E:  "Yeah the babies kicked for the first time? What do you mean you don't really know where you are? And why do I hear motorcycles in the background? "

B: "OH MY GOSH THE BABIES KICKED! Ever that's awesome! I wish Jade and I could have been there for that! Have you told Adrian yet?! "

E: "Not yet, I tried calling him earlier but I think he and Jake are busy. ANYWAYS don't change the subject–"

The waitress finally brought out our orders and my mouth watered at the sight of my double chocolate fudge brownie sundae. Don't lose focus Ever! Bri is more important than your deliciously scrumptious chocolate ice cream…

B: " Do you want me to tell Adrian to call you? I just saw him and Jake a little bit ago! "

Huh? Why would Adrian be there with Jade and Brianna?

E: "Adrian's there? Bri where are you? "

B: " I think it's some sort of illegal street race thing! Right now I'm standing in the mall's empty parking lot– honestly, I'm surprised that he didn't bring you with him! He didn't tell you that he was racing tonight? "

E: "Adrian's racing? "

I looked over at Paula and she looked like she'd just seen a ghost. So she knew?

B: "Yeah! Jade is racing tonight too, that's why we're here! Did Adrian seriously not tell you anything? "

E: "No, he didn't… "

Paula lowered her head like I had just learned some great big secret she didn't want me knowing about. Now I'm a little peeved that no one told me anything about these races!

I wanna watch too dammit!

As the waitress walked by again I asked her if she could get us some to-go bowls as I shuffled my way out of the booth, Paula following closely behind.

B: "... Oh, I don't think I was supposed to say anything then… forget I said anything! "

E: "Too late! Which mall? "

B: "E, I love you, but I don't think–"

E: "Which. Mall? "

B: "... Westside… "

E:  "I'll see you in a bit. "

End of phone call

"so, " I looked over at Paula as she hopped into her old pickup truck "Adrian is an illegal street racer and no one thought to tell me this? "

"Ever, –"

"don't 'Ever' me! Did any of you stop to consider how I would feel about this?! Like seriously, I want to watch Adrian race too! "

"Huh? You're not mad? " She's looking at me as if I've grown three heads since the last time she blinked and I could only laugh at her reaction.

"Oh no, I'm upset, but only because you guys decided to keep it a secret about how freaking awesome you guys are!! "

"You're a strange child, you know that? "

"Thanks, now off to the races! "

...…

Adrian's POV

Jade just finished her race and Brianna ran straight into her arms congratulating her on her win. I wish Ever was here. I think she'd have a good time. But it can be dangerous, especially for a pregnant woman. That's why I haven't told her about the races yet.

"Nice job shrimp! " I congratulated, ruffling Jade's hair. She pouted and smacked my hand away, fixing her helmet hair.

"knock it off jerk! You're up next aren't you? " she asked as she moved her bike from the finish line to an open part of the parking lot.

"yeah I'm headed there now, " I ruffled her hair again making her groan in annoyance, "wish me luck! "

"fuck off! "

"close enough! "

Usually, my race would start on the top floor of the parking garage, but this time my race starts from where Jade finished and will end at the garage.

As I was leaving, Brianna's phone rang twice before she picked up the third time, muttering a few curses to herself. I don't know where Jake ran off to, so I headed for the starting line by myself.

"So you're my competition? Ha! This'll be a piece of cake!" turning my head slightly, I noticed a boy who looked like he could be around Ever's age- maybe younger– sitting on top of a cherry red Yamaha R6.

It's a beautiful bike- the latest model and everything, but it's wasted on a kid like him. Speaking of the kid, he looks kind of familiar for some reason, at least from what I can tell since I can barely see through all of those gold-digging friends of his… he doesn't have his helmet on either so every time someone moved I caught a glimpse of his professionally done bleach blonde hair but that was about it.

I don't know if it's done professionally, but he seems like the type to go to the salon to get his hair done. There's nothing wrong with that, I myself have gone to a salon to get my hair done once.

In the 7th grade.

Throwing my helmet on, I grumbled to myself about how annoying teenagers these days are. Except for Ever– she isn't annoying.

I wonder what she's up to right now… did she and Paula have a good time shopping? I'll have to call her when this is over.

"Alrighty, boys! Start your engines! " the annoying voice of tonight's flag girl rang out as she stepped in front of us in her 8-inch stripper heels. I didn't look much beyond that cause let's be honest– no one can compete with Ever's beauty.

Gosh, that was cheesy… but accurate.

I ignored the trivial mutterings of the child next to me. I think he's trying to provoke me? But he's failing miserably.

For a moment I closed my eyes. Feeling the vibrations of my baby underneath me, while taking in a deep breath– inhaling the intoxicating scent of gasoline and motor oil. Adrenaline floods my veins as the countdown begins.

This win is for her. For, Ever!

"GO! "

Adrian's POV

Like I expected, the kid next to me shot out like a rocket while I followed shortly behind. The streets were mostly empty by now since it was around midnight so we didn't have to worry about pedestrian crossing. This short stack keeps zig tagging in front of me, doing wheelies and all this other dangerous crap— without a helmet mind you! So now I'm not only worried about my safety, but his too!

Everytime I get close enough to pass him, he nearly rams us both off the road! If anything happens to my baby because this kid doesn't actually know how to ride his bike, I swear I will take his bike and replace it with one that has a chain instead of a motor.

Seriously! Does he have a death wish or something!

We're about to round the corner of the third block, and around this area is super dangerous because the street becomes super narrow, so I decided to be nice and warn the newbie.

"Hey! Be careful around this bend! " I shouted loud enough so he could hear me despite how muffled my voice is with this helmet.

He ignored me. Let's try again, maybe he didn't hear me!

"HEY! BE CAREFUL AROUND THIS BEND! IT'S A ONE-WAY STREET SO IT'S A BIT MORE NARR–! "

Note to self… Don't help spoiled little shitheads who think they know what they're doing— let them fail on their own.

Instead of being grateful for the warning– this little gnome decided to flip me off and speed ahead. So slowing down just a tad I waited for the sound of screeching tires and falling trash cans before speeding ahead of him.

I wasn't disappointed.

You know how in movies you would see that one– idiotic asshat of an antagonist, chasing the protagonist, but because they weren't paying attention to where they were going they end up in a pile of garbage with a banana peel on their head?

That's what this kid looks like. And I cringed when I saw his bike lying a few feet away from him. There goes the paint job.

Speeding past him, I continued my way to the parking garage which was now only 2 blocks away. But I'll give this kid some credit, he doesn't seem to be the type to give up easily.

As I rounded the corner of the last block, I could see a flash of that cherry-red beauty tailing shortly behind. Maybe it wasn't as fucked as it looked… shrugging it off, I continued speeding straight ahead toward the parking garage.

Rounding corner after corner– level after level, the finish line was in sight. So going full throttle, I crossed the finish line without a hitch. My opponent, a close second.

Like usual, I ignored everyone's cheers and headed towards the back of the garage where Jade, Jake, and Ever…?

What is she doing here?!

Pushing my way through the crowd of people, I was finally able to see more clearly. Ever really is here! But how?! I haven't told her yet!

"Move dammit!" I growled out, glaring at the people swarming around me. Can't they see I want nothing to do with them? The ones who heard me jumped back, surprised by the hostility in my voice, while others– mostly women– were still trying to gain my attention.

One person in particular decided to stand in front of me and my bike. It was the flag girl. She was playing with her hair and biting her lip, like she was some innocent little lamb— which is a complete joke considering I just saw her hanging off some other dude not 5 minutes ago.

Keeping my eyes focused on Ever–who was standing straight behind this gold digger– and I continued walking forward. When I was standing about 12 inches in front of her, she was eyeing me up. But I continued to watch Ever and smirked a little to myself when I saw her scowling at the wannabe stripper in front of me.

After roughly 30 of trying to get passed her I had enough, "DAMMIT WILL YOU FUCKIN MOVE?! CAN'T YOU SEE I'M TRYING TO GET TO MY GIRLFRIEND!? " shooting her the nastiest glare I could muster, I shoved my way past her.

"sorry 'bout that precious. Some people just don't know when to quit, " I kissed the side of her head as I parked my bike, then pulled her in for a hug– which she returned eagerly and that surprised me a little.

I thought that she was gonna punch me or curse me out for not telling her about this side of me, but the night's still young so…

"It's okay, congrats Bub! " she was mumbling and slurring her words a bit so I can tell that she's super tired. Her eyelids were even drooping a little like she was gonna pass out right here and I couldn't help but compare her to a tiny kitten. Just seeing her like this makes my heart go a thousand miles a minute.

"you've got some chocolate on your face, love. " I chuckled, wiping it off the corner of her lip.

"Well that's embarrassing! " she yawned out, wiping her whole face with the sleeve of her sweatshirt.

"Ever? Baby, Is that you? " I noticed how she froze mid wipe, turning slowly towards the direction the obnoxiously loud voice came from.

"What the hell do you want Enzo? And would you stop calling me that already?! I told you we aren't getting back together, so leave me alone! "

Enzo? The fucker who left her high and dry in the middle of nowhere? That Enzo?

Wait… Didn't I just race this kid? Well that just makes my win way more satisfying than all the other times I've ever one.
